Tigerfish (Hydrocynus vittatus) are one of Africa's premier freshwater game fish. The Panyame Camp on the lower Zambezi River offers anglers the opportunity to fish for these aggressive predators in some of Africa's most majestic scenery. This particular area of the lower Zambezi River is known as the Zambezi River Valley, which has proven to be one of the world's premier fly fishing destinations for Tigerfish.

The camp is situated on the southern bank of the Zambezi River, downstream from the confluence of the Luangwa and Zambezi Rivers, located in the Panyame Concession (private land) in western Mozambique. Anglers will have the opportunity to fish the Zambzi River, the Lake Cahora Bassa, and the delta where the Zambezi spills into Lake Cahora Bassa. The maze of channels and structure offer excellent opportunities to target Tigerfish in any weather condition or water level, and there are lots of big Tigerfish in the lower Zambezi.

The Panyame fishing area is primarily the headwaters of Lake Cahora Bassa, where the Zambezi River slows down and spreads out into channels, which vary in width from 300 feet to more than a mile. Some of the best fishing is around the larger islands in the channels, which create large floodplains with edges that attract baitfish and large numbers of Tigerfish. Sandbars and other structure that creates ideal Tigerfish habitat and prime feeding areas also break up the channels. This delta is a productive fishery because it's situated between a gorge upstream on the Zambezi and dam downstream, concentrating the feeding Tigerfish in and around the channels. About 80% of the fishing is within 3 miles of the camp.

Panyame caters for up to eight anglers in spacious safari style tented chalets, each with two double beds (with mosquito netting), en-suite bathroom and shower, which have a constant supply of hot water. Panyame has a large central dining area for evening meals, with a comfortable lounge area providing the perfect atmosphere for a quiet drink and discussing the following days fishing. There is also a well-maintained pool over looking the mighty Zambezi to help anglers cool off after fishing.

The fishing day is broken up into morning and afternoon sessions to take advantage of the best fishing times. The average Tigerfish weights 6lbs, with anglers landing fish between 10 and 14lbs on a regular basis. All the fishing is done from an 18ft aluminum boat with a 100HP Yamaha engine. This allows anglers the opportunity to drift and fish through some of the most spectacular scenery Africa has to offer in safely due to numerous hippos and crocodiles which call this section of the Zambezi home. Besides Hippo and Crocodile, Buffalo, Kudu, Bushbuck, Warthog, Grysbok and sometimes Elephant can be seen while fishing with a professional and experienced Fly Castaway fly fishing guides.
