The fertile waters off of Golfito on Costa Rica's southern Pacific coast, first came to prominence in the early 90's. The area caught the attention of the fishing world not only for it's abundance of Pacific sailfish and blue & black marlin, but for its incredible diversity of inshore and offshore species including dorado, yellowfin and bigeye tuna, wahoo, roosterfish, Pacific black snook, bluefin trevally, cubera snapper, amberjack and a host of others.

The Zancudo Lodge (formerly Roy's Zancudo Lodge) first opened as a very basic fishing camp in the early '90's on Playa Zancudo, a few miles west of the town of Golfito. As word spread of the incredible fishing, the business grew, and new boats, motors, tackle were added each year. The original cabanas were replaced a beautiful two-story unit with spacious, hotel class double rooms with full size beds, airconditioning, mini-fridge and telephone. A swimming pool and hot tub were added. The lodge was soon recognized as the finest blue water fishing operation on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica.

The property sold in 2005 and is now in the capable hands of American and onsite managing partner, Greg Mufson, who has elevated the commitment to detailed personal attention while maintaining status as a world class fishing operation. Over 60 IGFA world record have been set at Zancudo Lodge in its 20-year history.

The beautiful beachfront lodge sits diagonally opposed to the famous Matapalo Rock at the mouth of Golfo Dulce. Two new buildings in 2002 replace the old cabaña  accomodations. Guests stay in 12 double occupancy rooms arranged in horseshoe fashion around the lodge's beautiful swimming pool and Jacuzzi. All the units are now air conditioned for those who require it, but prevailing ocean breezes and ceiling fans usually keep the rooms comfortably cool for sleeping.

The spacious main lodge contains the dining room and bar area and kitchen where sumptuous meals are prepared and served "family style".

Most telling about the efficiency of a lodge operation are the "behind the scenes" rooms like the tackle room which inventory an incredible assortment of rods, reels, lines, spare parts, hooks, lures, swivels, snaps etc. to ensure every boat is outfitted with anything the captain could possibly need. Top of the line conventional rods & reels, including fly tackle ranging from 6 - 14 weight are furnished for guests.

The mechanics shed reflects the same "prepared for anything" attitude with an impressive array of spare outboards, and spare parts from spark plugs to props. All in all, a clear indication of Greg's commitment to running an impeccable operation.

Fishing is "Panama style" from a fleet of 12 seaworthy, custom built 28-foot center consoles. The fleet has been repowered with brand new twin 4-stroke Suzuki 115 HP outboards. Each boat is equipped with a large T-top affording ample shade, VHS radio, depth finders, outriggers, and an assortment of top of the line tackle for inshore and offshore fishing.

Zancudo's location is about 30 minutes closer to the opening of Golfo Dulce into the ocean, meaning you can be catching sailfish in blue water within a 30 - 60 minute run.

The lodge has a very experienced roster of captains including several veterans from the glory days of Sailfish Rancho and from Panama's once famous Club Pacifico.

The seasons for Golfito are pretty well defined. Although sails, blue, black and the occasional striped marlin are caught year round, the best sailfishing occurs from mid-December through mid-April; the best marlin fishing is usually in the summer and fall months, best tuna, dorado, rooster and wahoo fishing during the fall.

Zancudo Lodge offers standard packages ranging from 4 nights/3 days fishing to as long as you like. There are no fixed transfer days so guests may arrive and depart any day of the week.
