Argentina Fly Fishing Fly Fishing Trips

Updated on

Argentina is one of the world’s premier fly fishing destinations. Anglers come for the diversity: classic trout waters in the Andes, sea-run brown trout at the bottom of the world, and golden dorado in the north. The country’s reverse season—November through April—lines up with prime time in the Southern Hemisphere, so you can chase trophy fish while it’s cold back home. Add first-class lodges, experienced guides, and Argentine hospitality, and you get a trip that’s as much about the place as the fishing.

Angler Adventures represents lodges from Esquel to Junin del los Andes with Bariloche in the middle. This region represents the best trout fishing Argentina has to offer, including extensive wade and float fishing options – much of it on private estancias (ranches).

Where to Fly Fish in Argentina: Regions at a Glance

Patagonian trout (Northern and Central Patagonia)
Rivers like the Limay, Malleo, Collón Curá, and Chimehuin flow cold and clear through mountain and steppe. Brown, rainbow, and brook trout thrive here, along with strong dry-fly and nymph fishing. Many lodges and outfitters offer private or semi-private water, so you can spend days without seeing another boat. This is the Argentina most people imagine: big skies, gaucho country, and trout that respond to well-presented flies.

Tierra del Fuego and sea-run brown trout
At the southern tip of South America, Tierra del Fuego is in a league of its own. The Río Grande and nearby rivers hold sea-run brown trout that migrate from the ocean—fish that regularly reach double digits and can exceed 20 pounds. The season is short and the experience intense: wading or fishing from beats on one of the most famous sea-trout rivers in the world. Trips here are premium and often book far in advance.

Northern Argentina and golden dorado
North of Buenos Aires, the Paraná system and the Iberá wetlands hold golden dorado—powerful, acrobatic fish that crush streamers and surface flies. The landscape feels more like the tropics than Patagonia: marshes, big rivers, and a completely different fishery. Lodges here specialize in dorado, and many offer multi-day programs that combine several waters or lodges.

King salmon (Santa Cruz and south)
In select rivers—including the Santa Cruz and others in the south—anglers can target king salmon during summer runs (roughly January–March). This is a niche but growing option for those who want something beyond trout and dorado.

FAQ about Argentina Fly Fishing

What Species Can You Target in Argentina?

Brown trout, rainbow trout, and brook trout across Patagonia; sea-run brown trout in Tierra del Fuego; golden dorado in the Paraná and Iberá regions; and in some waters, king salmon and other species. Lodges and outfitters will tailor the trip to the species and experience you want.

When Is the Best Time to Fly Fish Argentina?

The main season runs from November through April. December through February is peak for dry flies and general trout fishing in Patagonia. March and April can be excellent for larger migratory trout and more technical fishing. Tierra del Fuego’s sea-run brown season has specific windows—often late January through April—depending on the river. Dorado in the north can fish well across the warmer months. Ask us for the best window for your target species and region.

Do I Need a Fishing License?

Yes. Licenses are required in Argentina and are typically purchased per province or through your lodge/outfitter. Your program will usually outline how and where to get them.

What Gear Should I Bring?

For Patagonian trout, 5- and 6-weights are standard; bring floating lines and a selection of dry, nymph, and streamer lines. For sea-run browns in Tierra del Fuego, 7- to 10-weights and strong tippets are the norm. For dorado, 7- and 8-weights with streamer and topwater options. Your lodge or outfitter can provide a detailed list; we can help you match gear to your trip.

Is Argentina Catch-and-Release?

Many of Argentina’s premier lodges and waters promote catch-and-release to protect wild fish. Practices vary by lodge and region; we can point you to programs that match your values.

How Do I Get There?

Most trips start with a flight to Buenos Aires, then a domestic flight to a regional hub (e.g. Bariloche, Esquel, Río Gallegos, or a northern airport depending on the program). Lodges and outfitters often arrange transfers from the airport. We can walk you through flights and logistics for your chosen region.

Why Book Argentina Through Angler Adventures?

We’ve been matching anglers with the right lodges and rivers for decades. We know the regions, the seasons, and the programs—from Patagonian trout and Fly Fishing Andes to Tierra del Fuego and northern dorado. Tell us what you want (species, vibe, budget, dates), and we’ll help you get there.
