Fly Castaway specializes in guiding groups of dedicated fly anglers to various exotic destinations in Africa and the Indian Ocean Islands. With the benefit of years of fly fishing and guiding experience, Fly Castaway professional guides Keith Rose-Innes, Arno Matthee and Gerhard Laubscher will guide you into the catch of a lifetime.

Fly Castaway uses a series of mother ships as its bases of operations for fishing the Seychelles; the surest way to put the angler in the best place at the best time. The Fly Castaway guides pride themselves in their extensive understanding of all the fishable atolls in the Seychelles chain, meaning that they can offer valuable information on where to go and what to expect. Fly Castaway offers unique trips to the Seychelles, in particular, Cosmoledo Atoll, Astove Atoll, and their newest, hottest real estate, Providence Atoll.
Cosmoledo Atoll
Lying 550 miles South-West of Mahe, the atoll of Cosmoledo is entirely uninhabited and untouched. It forms part of the Aldabra group, one of the three groups of coralline islands, known as the Outer Islands. Cosmoledo is a stones throw away from the world heritage site of Aldabra, and in many respects resembles the latter. It is often referred to as the Galapagos of the Indian Ocean.

This huge atoll, almost three times the size of Farquhar, is home to outstanding double-digit Bonefish and is one of the world's premier Giant Trevally fisheries. It is also home to some huge specimens of the elusive milkfish.

A three-hour flight from Mahe, Seychelles will take you to Assumption, where you will be transferred to one of several Fly Castaway mother ships. After anglers have settled in to their cabins, the mother ship departs for the Aldabra island group at the remote south-west end of the Seychelles. The trip takes about 8 hours aboard the ship, which reaches Cosmoledo just before dawn of the next day.
For the next seven days you will use eat and sleep aboard the mother ship and use her as a base from which to mount daily fishing excursions. The flats surrounding Cosmoledo are white and hard, making wading very easy. This makes casting all day from the deck of a skiff unnecessary and allows the angler more personal interaction with this amazing ecosystem. A knowledgeable Fly Castaway guide is still on hand to provide an extra set of eyes, help with fly and tackle selection, and pick optimum locations based on tide and wind. The rest, of course, is up to you.

There is a wide range of target species on Cosmoledo. Huge shoals of bonefish roam the flats with every tide, and according to the Fly Castaway guides, there are more Giant Trevally and Milkfish in this atoll's shallow waters than anywhere else in the world.

The Bluewater fly fishing around Cosmoledo can also be very productive. During a certain period good numbers of Sailfish, Wahoo, Yellowfin and dogtooth tuna can be found very close to the atoll. The Fly Castaway guides are experienced in all aspects
of bluewater fly-fishing and can help you add variation to your trip by introducing you to this abundant fishery. Targeting these fish can be relatively easy at times and a nice break from the flats for a session or two.

Astove Atoll
Astove Atoll is the smallest Atoll in the Aldabra Island group and is one of the southern most Atolls in the Seychelles. This little jewel lies 560 miles south of Mahe and measures less than 4 miles from North to South and 3.6 miles East to West. This tiny atoll is often overlooked as a fishing destination with angler's preferring to fish the much larger Cosmoledo Atoll.

Astove Atoll is unique and unlike any of the other Atoll's in the Seychelles. The entire rim of Astove is exposed with only one channel to drain the lagoon into the ocean. On an incoming tide, thousands of bonefish will rush into the lagoon making it a fly angler's paradise. Anglers in the lagoon have no view of the ocean around them; it is more like fishing an inland bonefish flat than fishing a lagoon. On a falling tide, anglers can wade towards the channel and see an aquarium like variety of game fish and sharks feeding on the bonefish as they are forced out of the lagoon. There are also schools of huge Giant Trevally on the seaward side of the atoll patrolling the shallows.

Astove's most unique feature is the "wall" on the western side. Standing on the reef, anglers can cast sinking lines over a deep drop-off (approximately 7,000 feet) and catch species like dog-toothed and yellowfin tuna as well as wahoo, and other bluewater species.

Standard trips to Cosmiledo can easily be adapted to include a visit to Astove without incurring any additional costs. Spending a day or two fishing Astove is perfect option for anglers looking for something truly unique.

Providence Atoll
This is the newest and hottest venue in the Seychelles. Providence Atoll is very remote and virtually untouched. According to the authorities who govern this tropical paradise, less than 1000 people have visited the atoll over the last 100 years.

Providence Atoll is situated 380 miles South by SouthWest of Mahe and is just short of being the most southerly atoll in the Seychelles group. This huge atoll 28.6 miles north to south and just under 10 miles, east to west.

Providence Atoll consists of two Islands, Providence North and
Cerf Island. These are surrounded and separated by vast sandbanks, flats and channels offering anglers a diverse array of fishing scenarios. Providence offers superb flats fishing for Bonefish, Indo-Pacific Permit, Giant Trevallys, Barracuda, Milkfish, Triggerfish as well as the newly targeted Bumphead Parrotfish. This atoll could become known as the place with the biggest Bonefish in the Seychelles.
There are populations of large bonefish on both North and Surf Islands and bonefish of 10 lb and over have been landed. The Giant Trevally fishing can equally exciting with one notable afternoon session, where a group of anglers caught as many as 35 GT's in a few hours. Providence is an unbelievable destination and is one of the last truly unspoilt fishing destinations left on planet earth.

Providence's blue water fly-fishing can be equally as spectacular. At certain times, large numbers of Sailfish, Dogtooth Tuna, Yellowfin Tuna and Wahoo are often found just off the reef edge, allowing anglers the opportunity to take a break from fishing the flats while still standing an excellent chance of landing a trophy pelagic.

Just a one-hour and fourty-five minute flight from Mahe will take you to Farquhar, the closest island to Providence with an operational airstrip, where you will be transferred to one of several Fly Castaway mother ships. Depending on the time of arrival on Farquhar, there may be the chance for a bluewater fishing session off Farquhar. After anglers have settled in to their cabins, the mother ship departs for Providence. The trip takes about 8 hours aboard the ship, which reaches Providence just before dawn of the next day.

At Cosomoledo, Astove, or Providence Atoll, the daily routine is the same. Anglers will rise very early and head straight out onto the flats after a quick fisherman's breakfast. The morning is spent exploring the rich Seychellois flats. Anglers return to the boat for lunch. Depending on tides, there is usually an extended afternoon break following the mid-day meal. This is a good time to get out of the brightest sun of the equatorial day, tie flies, nap, or snorkel.

The daily schedule is very relaxed. Fishing will be planed on a day-to-day basis by the captain, guides and anglers depending on specific species of interest as well as weather and tides. On a good day, the experienced angler might catch over 50 bonefish. Or you may ask you guide to lead you to giant trevally, pampano, barracuda, several species of triggerfish or milkfish. Just offshore tuna, wahoo and sailfish can be targeted.

Fly Castaway's mother ships include 3 schooners: Sea Star, Sea Pearl (top of page), and Sea Bird for trips to Providence Atoll and the Indian Ocean Explorer, a research vessel converted to provide uncomplicated hard-wood and brass accommodations (pictured below and at right), the exclusively used for trips to Cosmoledo Atoll.

Please note: There is no liquor or spirits on board any of the Fly Castaway mother ships. If you would like to have liquor available during your time with Fly Castaway, we recommend purchasing your own in Mahe and bringing on board with you.
