Situated on Costa Rica's beautiful southern Pacific coast in Puntarenas Province near the mouth of Golfo Dulce, the newly refurbished Golfito Sailfish Rancho (GSR) is Central America's hottest new fishing destination.

Golfito Sailfish Rancho first opened in January 1989 and  first received international attention in Salt Water Sportsman editor Barry Gibson's feature article in the July 1989 issue.

Golfito Sailfish Rancho

"Grab Bag at Golfito" was a glowing account of  Barry's March 19 - 23, 1989 trip to Golfito Sailfish Rancho recounting not only the wonderful fishing for sails, blue and black marlin, but peppered with  photos of 200 pound yellowfin tuna, 50 + pound roosterfish and huge cubera snapper, the story emphasized the amazing diversity of this fishery.

For the first 4 years, Golfito Sailfish Rancho  was one of the most popular and successful sport fishing operations in Costa Rica.

Unfortunately, the Rancho became the victim of a divorce settlement and by 1993, operations and equipment were quickly deteriorating.

The property was subsequently sold and resold - opened and closed several times.  It seemed as if no one possessed the resources or inclination to put the Rancho back on her feet, until recently.

In 1998 GSR was purchased by American Betsy Bullard an ardent and well-traveled offshore angler.   Betsy has exhibited a firm commitment to making GSR better than ever.

The first step was to scrap the war-worn 23-foot Makos and start from scratch with a fleet of 10 brand new 27-foot Ocean Masters powered by 300 hp Yanmar diesels, with a cruising speed of 32 mph.

All the boats are fully equipped with VHF radios, GPS, fish finder, live bait well, tuna tubes, outriggers, head and top of the line Penn International and Shimano tackle.

While sails were the main attraction, the area also supports good numbers of  blue and black marlin and the occasional striped marlin.  The inshore fishing in these waters is some of the best in Costa Rica, particularly for roosterfish (largest caught 85 lbs.) and giant cubera (Pacific dog) snapper.  Other species available include: dorado; yellowfin tuna; big eye tuna; wahoo; rainbow runner; grouper; bluefin trevally; amberjack; jack crevalle; black snook and more!  It's not unusual for guests to boat 10, 12 or more different species during their trip.

Another beautiful Golfito Sail!

Golfito Sailfish Rancho can accommodate 20 guests in 10 double rooms each of which is located on the beach just steps away from the Golfo Dulce.  The rooms are large with plenty of closet and storage  space, ceiling fans, and a porch overlooking the pier and beach. Each room has its own tiled bathroom with an oversized, walk-in lighted shower.

A cascading waterfall directly behind the lodge powers a waterwheel which augments the electrical supply at Golfito Sailfish Rancho.  The heart of the lodge is the spectacular main dining room where the bountiful meals are served. Constructed of cristobal and other rare native Costa Rican woods, the open dining area with its unrestricted views of the beautiful cove and surrounding jungle habitat is a showplace among fishing lodges.

Golfito Sailfish Rancho offers fishing packages from 3 days to as many as you'd like (see rate sheet, below). The 2006-2007 rate for a typical 5 fishing day package costs $3,695 per person based on 2 anglers sharing a double room and boat.
