Guatemala, the sailfishing capitol of the world!

Nice Pacific Sailfish The Pacific coast of Guatemala features some of the world's most consistently calm billfishing waters. The charter fleets we offer consist of comfortable and well equipped boats and some of the best captains in the world. Much of the fishing takes place only 10 to 20 miles offshore.

Sailfish, Marlin, Dorado (Dolphin), and Yellowfin Tuna are the most common species in the area. However, Guatemala is the place to go specifically for
sailfishing. On average, you can experience 15 to 20 bites a day and during the peak season of October through June, and 40 or more bites is common. The top boats release over 2,000 sailfish a year. Average Guatemalan sailfish are big too, averaging 70 to 90 pounds and commonly exceeding 100 pounds.

Blue Marlin are released in much smaller numbers, but are caught on a regular basis. They average 250 to 400 pounds, but larger fish in the 800 pound range have been released.

The most effective bait in Guatemala is Ballyhoo rigged with circle
hooks. Most boats use high quality 30 to 50 pound class stand-up tackle. A rigged mackerel, ready to pitch back to any Marlin that shows up in the spread, is kept close at hand by most crews.

Guatemala is also the best place in the world to fly fish for sails. The shear abundance of strikes will provide incredible action for novice and expert alike. Most captains are well equipped to instruct beginners or to help the expert caster find his trophy fish.

The sailfishing in Guatemala is all catch and release under national mandate, insuring that this fishing hot spot will remain the angler's choice for many years to come.

There've been a lot of changes in Iztapa, Guatemala since Capt. Hank Robbins pioneered this incredible fishery in the early 80's. Several operations have come and gone. Incredible records are still being set, like Capt. Ron Hamlin's astounding 124 sailfish release day, and Capt. Chris Scheeder's 61 sails on the fly in one day (both in March 2006). The one thing that has not changed is that Guatemala still offers the best sailfishing in the world, hands down please.

The sailfishing opportunities in Guatemala have grown substantially since our first explorations with Capt. Hank Robbins in the early 90's. New lodges and some of the world's top offshore and sailfishing Captians give Iztapa, Guatemala exciting new options for anglers who are looking for world class sailfisihing. Casa Vieja is a brand new sailfishing lodge, owned by Jim Turner, located less than one mile from the marina. The accommodations are the most luxurious of these three lodges and has the most experienced sailfishing captains.

Pacific Fins purchased the well known Fins and Feathers facility and has thoroughly renovated it for the 2007/2008 season. Guatemala sailfishing legend Captain Ron Hamlin is also heading up the fishing program there.

Sailfish Bay Lodge is in its fifth successful season of operation. Sailfish Bay has consistently posted very impressive numbers of released sailfish with the three lodge owned boats and the Bertrams they pull from the local fleet.
