Two Lodges, One Week South of Chaitén

Eleven Martín Pescador is one Saturday-to-Saturday week at two riverfront lodges in Chile’s Lake District. The week starts at Río Yelcho Lodge in Puerto Cárdenas, on Lago Yelcho, then moves south to Río Rosselot Lodge in La Junta. Guides fish Río and Lago Yelcho, the Río Futaleufú, Río and Lago Rosselot, the Río Figueroa, the Río Pico, and the Río Palena. Angler Adventures books the week and helps plan the travel.

Chilean Patagonia holds a lot of trout water. Eleven splits this week between two bases so the fishing covers two watersheds, with a ground transfer between the lodges included.

Río Yelcho Lodge sits in Valdivian rainforest: five private casitas with wood-burning stoves, en suite bathrooms, and decks, plus a main lodge, glacier and river views, two hot tubs, and a sauna. Río Rosselot Lodge, farther south at La Junta, has five double rooms with river views, wraparound decks, a living room with a wood stove and a stocked bar, and a hot tub. Both lodges have a boat dock and a wader room.

The summer season on Eleven’s page runs from January through the end of March, and the off-peak rate window continues to April 24. January is the dragonfly hatch and higher water. February is the dry-fly month. March is when the trout feed hard ahead of winter.

Fly Fishing from Yelcho and Rosselot

The week fishes from two places. From Río Yelcho Lodge at Puerto Cárdenas, guides work Río Yelcho, Lago Yelcho, and the Río Futaleufú. From Río Rosselot Lodge at La Junta, they work Río Rosselot, Lago Rosselot, the Río Figueroa, the Río Pico, and the Río Palena, plus stretches the boats can reach that a road cannot.

Days are guided floats. Eleven keeps jet boats, pangas, catarafts, whitewater rafts, and lake boats, and trucks for drive-in put-ins away from the lodges. The guides set the day around the water and how you like to fish.

In January, the dragonfly hatch is on, the water is higher, and trout take dries, dry-droppers, and streamers. February brings steadier water and the dry-fly season: mayflies, caddis, and terrestrials. In March the trout feed ahead of winter, and dry flies still work on the warmer days.

Gear Eleven Provides

  • Rods: Thomas & Thomas
  • Reels: Abel Vaya
  • Wading: Simms waders, boots, and Taco bags
  • Flies: Montana Fly Company, plus flies the guides tie

The fishing license is included. Plan on using the lodge gear for the week.

The Two-Lodge Week

The package is seven nights, Saturday to Saturday, with nights at both lodges. You arrive at Río Yelcho Lodge, about an hour from the Chaitén airport. The drive south to Río Rosselot Lodge at La Junta is included.

Eleven’s published offer describes the peak week as seven nights and six fishing days. Angler Adventures confirms the fishing-day count for the dates you want.

Staying at Río Yelcho and Río Rosselot

Río Yelcho Lodge is the first base, in the rainforest at Puerto Cárdenas. The casitas are set up for twin or king beds, each with its own bathroom, a wood stove, and a deck. The main lodge has the dining room, a stocked bar, and a deck that looks at the glacier and the river. There are two hot tubs and a sauna.

Río Rosselot Lodge is the second base, at La Junta. Five double rooms have twin or king beds, en suite bathrooms, and river views. Wraparound decks, a living room with a wood stove, a stocked bar, and a hot tub fill out the house. Both lodges keep a boat dock and a wader room on the property.

Chefs cook breakfast, lunch, après, and dinner from local farms and the Pacific: mussels, clams, Chilean sea bass, and beef from Chile and Argentina, with an asado during the week. The bar pours Chilean wine, pisco sours, and Patagonian beer.

  • Río Yelcho Lodge: five casitas, main lodge, two hot tubs, sauna, Puerto Cárdenas
  • Río Rosselot Lodge: five double rooms, wraparound decks, hot tub, La Junta
