• Don’t Cancel Your Bahamas Fishing Trip: Why Post-Hurricane Conditions Create Epic Bonefishing

The Question Every Angler Asks (And Why the Answer Might Surprise You) Picture this: You’ve been planning your dream Bahamas bonefishing trip for months. You’ve researched lodges, booked flights, and counted down the days. Then, a week before departure, you see it—a hurricane is tracking toward your destination. Your first instinct? Cancel. Reschedule. Here’s what 40+ years of planning fly fishing trips has taught us: Don’t jump the gun. Wait. See what happens. Because on the back end of that hurricane, you could experience the best fishing of your entire life. I’m not exaggerating. I’ve seen it happen time…

  • Weather Conditions and Fishing Techniques: Adapting Your Approach

Here’s the thing about bonefishing: the weather doesn’t just affect your comfort—it fundamentally changes how fish behave, what they can see, and how you need to approach them. Whether you’re dealing with glass-flat calm conditions that make every shadow a warning signal, or cloudy, rainy days that let you get closer but hide the fish from view, understanding how to adapt your technique can turn a frustrating day into an exceptional one. The difference between a skunked day and a banner day often comes down to one simple question: are you fishing the conditions, or are you fishing the…

  • Why Every Angler Should Carry Crab Flies when Bonefishing

As anglers, we’re always analyzing our environment while fishing. One of the most consistent observations, especially when sight fishing for saltwater game fish, is just how many crabs you encounter. Whether you’re wading the flats for striped bass in the Northeast, exploring the hard sand flats in the Bahamas, or casting over coral and turtle grass in Belize, crabs are a crucial part of the food chain. Even in far-flung destinations like the Seychelles, their presence is immediately evident. Why Crab Flies Belong in Your Box Chip Bates from Angler Adventures recently added a section on crab flies to…

Monsters of May! Large, bright salmon begin entering the Restigouche during the month of May. Little is known about these May runs of fish, as up until 11 years ago, the season didn’t open until June 1st. Eleven years ago, New Brunswick, introduced a “spring salmon” (kelt) season, pushing back the traditional June 1st opening day to April 15th. Over these 11 years we’ve had only a few fisherman in camp before June 1st but they were all rewarded with big bright first run fish. Jim Grey, veteran salmon angler and author of The Handbook for the Margaree River was a…

Many of our long-time clients have never been to Bair’s or Abaco Lodge since most of the space is sold to repeat customers a year in advance. The following is a listing of available dates (please see our Bair’s Lodge or Abaco Lodge pages for a complete listing the current rates). Since Hurricane Dorian, we’ve been talking to a lot about the status of the Bahamas in general, but also about the fishing operations.  There are a lot of different opinions on the effects of Hurricane Dorian on the Bahamas, but the truth is that the vast majority of the Bahamas was unaffected by the storm. Yes, we’ve lost a few lodges on the hardest hit islands of Abaco and Grand Bahama. However, there are fishing lodges that are in great shape on both islands right now, and are having some spectacular fishing. Evan Peterson just visited both Abaco and…

LOWEST Prices of the Year at North Riding Point Club  Some of the best fishing for big “trophy” bonefish is on the North Shore of Grand Bahama.  North Riding Point Club is the only lodge fishing a vast and remote area of the North Shore.  Launching at North Riding Point, they are the only boats fishing prime flats 10+ miles east & west, and extending north including the remote water around the Sale Cays, Strangers Cay, and Carter Cay.  The fall and early winter are one of the most productive times to fish this area, especially for trophy, double-digit…

  • Most anglers identify South Andros as a huge expanse of wadable flats around the southern and southwestern tip of the island:  Flats filled with large schools of uneducated bonefish in the 2-4 pound range eager to eat flies.  Anyone interested in seeing larger fish in singles and doubles would gravitate the North Bight of Andros, the West Side of Andros, or the North Shore of Grand Bahama.  Think again! Over the last few years, more and more clients fishing Bair’s Lodge, Andros South, Pleasant Bay or Mars Bay are catching big bonefish.  The 7 – 10 pounders are being landed every month.  Mars Bay has…

  • Permit Time! Pesca Maya, Ascension Bay, Mexico

Over the past 25 years, more of our anglers have landed permit on the fly in Mexico’s beautiful Bahia de la Ascension than all our other permit destinations combined! We have our theories, but the fact remains, Ascension Bay permit will eat a fly more readily than Trachinotus falcatus in any other fishery we’ve experienced. The peak months for this fishery are just around the corner! As a bonus, April sees the arrival of the large migratory tarpon swelling the ranks of resident juvenile fish right through the summer and fall months. Add to this a prolific bonefishery, abundant (often very big) snook, and…

And rivers like the famed Ponoi River produce numbers that are staggering compared to any other salmon rivers in the world. Where the yardstick of high quality fishing in most Canadian rivers is considered a 1 fish per rod per day, it’s not uncommon for anglers to land 40, 50 or even 60 salmon in a week of fishing on the Ponoi. I loved visiting South Andros for the second time to explore its fishing lodges. I saw and fished with virtually every lodge there including the remote Mars Bay on Andros’s southern-most tip. As most of my clients know, I love fishing and the more I learn about an area the more enthusiastic I become. But fortunately, there are many other fantastic fisheries on this 100,000 + square mile land mass, and many of these receive very little pressure. Ouzel Expeditions was the first…

From the beginning of August, well in to the latter half of the month, the pine forests that line some of SW Montana’s finest trout streams, particularly the Big Hole, stir with the emergence of the Spruce Bud Moth.  First, the moth larvae develop into nickel sized winged adults. Shortly after, the moths perform their mating ritual over the water. On…

It fights more doggedly than most fish twice its size. This performance alone would qualify the bonefish as one of the world’s top fly-fishing targets. But what makes this silver phantom of the tropics the ultimate quarry in fly fishing is that you must see…

For example, a 5’ butt of 30-lb, 2 1/2 ’ section of 20-lb, 15” of 15-lb plus 27” tippet of 12 lb gives you an 11-foot leader.  We recommend clear leader material such as Mason, Maxima Clear (not “Maxima Chameleon” or “Ultra Green”) Ande, Rio…
