Silver King Lodge
The fishing
Silver King Lodge fishes tarpon on the Río Colorado at Barra del Colorado, on Costa Rica’s northeast Caribbean coast. The lodge sits one mile from the river mouth. No road reaches this coast, so guests travel from San José by domestic flight and boat.
The lodge describes the tarpon as a large resident population that does not migrate, averaging about 100 pounds, with many fish of 140 to 180 pounds and some over 200. Snook, tripletail, cubera and jack crevalle are on the list as well.
Silver King fishes 23′ deep-V boats with 200 hp Yamaha engines, 12 boats in all, plus 15′ river skiffs. Guests fish the river and the beach for tarpon and snook.
The lodge names February through mid-June and mid-August through November as its best months, and it is open all year. Caribbean outfitters more broadly point to mid-January through mid-May and September–October as the calmer windows at the river mouth. December is among the stormiest months on this coast.
Silver King offers fly fishing for experienced tarpon anglers. It can also run offshore for tuna, Atlantic sailfish and wahoo. Most guests come for the tarpon.
