Tropic Star Lodge is located in the remote and pristine Piñas Bay, Darien Province, Panama. This world-renowned fishing destination offers exceptional opportunities for both offshore big game fishing and inshore light tackle angling. The lodge’s proximity to the legendary Zane Grey Reef, just 20 minutes away, ensures quick access to some of the most productive fishing grounds in the Pacific.

Offshore Big Game Fishing

Piñas Bay is famous for its world-class big game fishing. Black Marlin can be targeted year-round, with peak season occurring in January and February when these magnificent fish are most abundant. During these months, anglers regularly encounter Black Marlin weighing 300 to 600 pounds, with some trophy fish exceeding 800 pounds. Blue Marlin are also abundant, particularly from June through September and in December, with fish commonly weighing 200 to 400 pounds.

Sailfish are another highlight of the offshore fishery, with large specimens regularly exceeding 100 pounds. The waters around Piñas Bay also hold impressive Yellowfin Tuna, typically ranging from 100 to 250 pounds, and Dorado (Mahi-Mahi) averaging 50 to 60 pounds. Wahoo are also available throughout the year, providing additional excitement for offshore anglers.

Inshore Light Tackle Fishing

The inshore fishery at Tropic Star Lodge is equally impressive, with Roosterfish being the star attraction. These powerful fish are abundant from March through May, with some specimens exceeding 70 pounds. The annual Roosterfish Tournament in May showcases the incredible size and abundance of these fish. Cubera Snapper, Bluefin Trevally, Broomtail Grouper, and Almaco Jack are also readily available, providing excellent light tackle action.

Tarpon can be found in the backwaters and brackish areas, offering fly anglers exciting opportunities. The inshore fishery includes over 17 additional species, ensuring that anglers always have multiple targets available.

Fishing Seasons & Packages

Black Marlin Season (January – February)

January and February represent the peak season for Black Marlin at Tropic Star Lodge. This is the most sought-after time to visit, and bookings should be made 1-2 years in advance due to high demand. During this season, only 7-night, 6-day fishing packages are available, reflecting the premium nature of this fishery. In addition to Black Marlin, anglers can also target Blue Marlin, large Sailfish (over 100 pounds), Yellowfin Tuna (100-250 pounds), and Dorado (50-60 pounds).

Inshore Season (March – May)

The Inshore Season offers flexible package lengths with options for 3-day, 4-day, or 6-day fishing packages. March features big Yellowfin Tuna and excellent inshore fishing. April offers record-sized Roosterfish and other inshore game fish. May is highlighted by the annual Roosterfish Tournament, with abundant Roosterfish, Cubera Snapper, Bluefin Trevally, and Grouper available. This season is perfect for anglers seeking world-class inshore action.

Blue Marlin Season (June – September & December)

June and July are excellent for big Roosterfish, with some fish exceeding 70 pounds. July is one of the best months overall, with Black Marlin, Blue Marlin, Sailfish, and Dorado all abundant, and Grand Slams being common. August offers big Blue Marlin and Sailfish, with some Black Marlin closer inshore. September can be excellent for Black Marlin, Blue Marlin, and Sailfish, with an excellent offshore bite for large Yellowfin Tuna and Dorado. December is a great all-around month for most species, including Black Marlin, Blue Marlin, Sailfish, Yellowfin Tuna, and Dorado.

Luxury Accommodations & Facilities

Tropic Star Lodge accommodates up to 45 guests in 23 spacious, air-conditioned rooms and villas. Each accommodation features private baths and views of either the ocean or tropical gardens. The lodge offers a range of options from double-occupancy standard rooms to upgraded villas, including two-bedroom and three-bedroom villas, as well as newly-built private residences.

Getting to Tropic Star Lodge

Travel to Tropic Star Lodge is a seamless and comfortable process. Guests begin by flying to Tocumen International Airport (PTY) in Panama City, where they are met at the airport and transferred to their hotel for an overnight stay. The following morning, guests take a 30-minute drive to the regional airport for a charter flight of just under one hour to Bahía Piñas.

Upon arrival at the airstrip, lodge staff escort guests via a short bus ride and a 10-15 minute water taxi to the lodge. The total journey from Panama City to the lodge takes approximately 2-3 hours, but the remote location ensures that once you arrive, you’re in a world-class fishing destination with minimal distractions.

Transfer Fee: $715 per person (round-trip) includes round-trip airfare from Panama City to the lodge, VIP services upon arrival (meet-and-greet at Tocumen International Airport), and up to four ground transfers.

Deep Water Cay Club (DWCC), located on Grand Bahama Island, is hard to beat for consistently productive bonefishing, top Bahamas’ guides, state-of-the-art bonefish skiffs, outstanding facilities and management, all within close proximity to the USA. Founded in 1959 by Gil Drake, Sr., DWCC has become an institution in the world of light tackle angling.

Set on the very private east end of Grand Bahama Island, Deep Water Cay Club is the gateway to over 250 miles of clear, pristine flats. The wadeable flats are hard-packed white sand, and the bones are easy to spot. Bonefish average 4-5 pounds up to 14 pounds.

World-Class Flats Fishing at Deep Water Cay Club

Deep Water Cay Club offers bonefishing as good as can be found in the Bahamas. The wadeable flats are hard-packed white sand, and the bones are easy to spot. Bonefish average 4-5 pounds up to 14 pounds. An estimated 250 miles of flats are within an hour’s boat ride of the Lodge.

There is also a flat within walking distance of the lodge for independent fishing. This and many other flats are wadeable at the lower stages of the tide. The three hour tidal difference between the east and west ends of the cay enable guests to fish medium to low tides and locate bonefish all day.

In addition to great bonefishing, there are good numbers of barracuda and sharks on the flats, as well as snapper, jacks and sometimes tarpon (not commonly) in the deeper cuts that dissect the cays. Two of the notable permit hot spots are Burrows Cay (30 minutes) and Moores Island (1 hour) by boat from the lodge. Both areas hold big permit averaging 28 to 34 pounds. The club permit record is 46 pounds. Mutton snapper and cudas can also be found on these flats.

Offshore and Reef Fishing

Besides the world class flats fishery, Deep Water Cay offers excellent offshore and reef fishing. From the Fall through the Spring, Wahoo, Sailfish, White and Blue Marlin, Mahi Mahi, and Tuna are found in the nearby Northwest Providence Channel, a short run for the Club’s 33-foot World Cat center console sportfisherman.

Reef fishing is also close by – less than a mile offshore. Grouper, snapper and barracuda are the commonly caught fish, and the action can be fast and furious. Reef fishing is a perfect activity for everyone, and remains strong year ’round.

Lodge Accommodations and Amenities

Deep Water Cay Club accommodates a maximum of twenty-two guests in oceanfront cottage rooms, which offer great views of the blue waters surrounding Grand Bahama. The well-appointed cottages are freshly painted and refurbished with all new bed and towel linens, air conditioning units, storm-proof front doors, fly rod racks and porches. Each cottage is clean and well-maintained and contain two full size beds, mini-fridge, coffee maker and walk-in closet for your convenience. Oceanfront porches with Teak Steamer Chairs complete the appointments.

The Founders Cottage and Drake House offer an even more spacious option for groups of four. Each has 2 bedrooms, full kitchen with dining areas, sitting and living room. Each offer great views from a wrap-around, beach-front veranda. These are a nice option for families or parties of 4.

Added to the original lodge in 1996, the DWCC Clubhouse elevated Deep Water Cay Club to the position of one of the most prominent fishing lodges in the world. With views of both sunrise and sunset, the lodge contains a dining room, kitchen, restrooms, a cocktail bar with fishing photos and fishing log book, a living room/library, a game room equipped with a poker table, pool table, backgammon, computer with access to high-speed internet as well as a fully equipped fly tying table.

Attached to the lodge is a covered walkway to the Barracuda Bar, which overlooks the infinity pool and includes a grill room for parties/events, a flat screen TV, as well as a workout facility.

Dining and Activities

DWCC’s cuisine includes fresh seafood grouper, snapper, lobster as well as that all time favorite, conch. In addition to superb seafood, traditional fare such as roast rack of lamb with crusty rosemary potatoes is served.

Other activities and amenities include bottom fishing, shelling, birding, jogging and walking, beaching, swimming, snorkeling, massage and fitness center. There are thatched umbrella-like covered areas for shade located directly in front of the lodge. There is a saltwater infinity swimming pool with lounge chairs nearby or you can swim just off the shore west of the main dock.

Deep Water Cay Club employs a highly professional staff of Bahamas bonefishing guides including Mervin, Walter, Meko, Wendy, Joe T, Cecil, Simeon, Steve, Randy, and Mike T. who carry on the Pinder legacy, founded at Deep Water Cay Club. All are conscientious and knowledgeable about how to fish with bait or flies.

The service at Deep Water Cay Club is old fashioned in the best sense of the word. As with most Caribbean resorts, there is a noticeable informality in the way things are run, but activities are punctual. Breakfast begins at 7:30 a.m. The fishing day lasts from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

The Fishing

Flats Fishing (Bonefishing)

Cape Santa Maria owns its own fleet of 16′ skiffs and draws from local experienced guides. The bonefish flats are located along the western and northern sections of the island. These flats are not extensive, but produce nice sized bonefish in good numbers. The bonefish flats are almost all wadeable. There is also a wadeable flat within walking distance of the resort which can be productive around low tide.

Deep Sea Fishing

For a deep-sea adventure, charters are available aboard the resort’s 31′ Bertram. Using ballyhoo, small bait fish and feather hoochies, you can fish for White and Blue Marlin, Kingfish, Wahoo, Shark, Tuna, Grouper, Dorado and Sailfish. The resort provides top of the line tackle.

Reef Fishing

Off Long Island are some of the best salt water reef fishing opportunities in the Bahamas. A reef fishing excursion puts you where the bottom fish are. From a comfortable 26′ Mako, you’ll admire vast coral and rock reefs as your bait attracts Grouper, Yellow-tail Snapper, Horseye Jacks, Amberjacks, King Mackerel, Tuna and Barracuda. Bring your catch back to the lodge for dinner!

The Resort

Tarpon Caye Lodge

Southern Belize, and particularly Placencia, has long been known as one of the top hotspots in the world for the elusive permit. While found in good numbers close to the mainland, the real action is found on the ocean flats located about 14 miles offshore near the barrier reef, an area known to cognoscenti as “Permit Alley”. These skinny water, white sand wading flats are gin-clear ocean water and offer what many consider the ultimate angling experience, stalking tailing permit on foot! When fishing the top 6 hours of the tide, it is not unusual for anglers to get 20, 30 or more legitimate shots at tailing permit.

Crossing the open ocean between the mainland and permit alley is a weather dependent affair in a small flats skiff. But fortunately for permit lovers, Tarpon Caye Lodge, owned and operated by world-renowned permit guide and guru, Charlie Leslie, is located smack dab in the center of this permit haven. A sea-worthy canopied 28-foot launch insures a comfortable ride out to the Caye. But permit aren’t the only game in town. For those who like diversity, there are plenty of tarpon (hence the name, Tarpon Caye), bonefish and other species to keep you occupied.

What distinguishes Tarpon Caye Lodge from other lodges is the flexibility of the daily fishing schedule. Charlie’s motto is, “we do fishing here!” Most other lodges operate on a set daily schedule, such as 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, irrespective of the tides. The permit fishing in the Alley, is extremely tide dependent. They are up on the flats feeding on the top 6-hours of the tide. If you had low tide at 12:00 noon and fished a conventional 8:00 am to 4:00 pm lodge schedule, you’d likely not see many permit between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm. However, at Tarpon Caye, if your preference is to concentrate on permit, with a tide like this, you’ll have toast and coffee at 4:00 am, and be out on the flats at daybreak to catch the last few good hours of outgoing tide. Then return to the lodge for a full breakfast and siesta, snorkeling, or use the lodge’s sea kayaks to paddle down 5 minutes to the flats on the south side of the Caye to fish on your own. Then you’ll had back out with your guide in mid-afternoon to catch the best part of the incoming and top of the tide. Fishing such a schedule practically guarantees permit anglers will have shots at fish during every hour of their fishing day!

The tarpon lagoon for which the Caye takes it’s name, is a few pole pushes from the dock, and is usually chock full of resident tarpon in the 20 – 50 pound class. From April through November, migratory ‘poons in the 50 – 100 + pound range may be encountered both in the lagoon and on a number of the deeper flats in the area. Bonefish are not only plentiful on many of the flats, but these ocean fish tend to be much larger average size than the mainland fish. All the flats are from 3 – 20 minutes run time from the dock. This may be the only destination on earth where you have a shot at a Grand Slam without traveling more than a mile from the lodge!

But flyfishing or spinfishing for the “Big Three” is just the tip of the iceberg. Opportunities for bottom fishing, conventional trolling and offshore casting and flyfishing are nearly limitless. The cut through the Barrier Reef is just 7-miles from the Caye, and the drop off just beyond can produce sailfish and blue marlin during the spring months, and what Charlie refers to as “Little Big Game Fishing” for, Dorado, wahoo, kings, amberjack, barracuda and more. The channels within minutes of the Caye also produce king mackerel, Spanish macks, wahoo, Dorado, bonito (little tunny), blackfin tuna and more. Bottom fishing yields over 7-species of groupers, 5-species of snappers, jack crevalle, bar jack, triggerfish and more. Regardless of your species or method of preference, Tarpon Caye guides are both well equipped and well schooled in catching just about anything that swims in these waters!

Accommodations at Tarpon Caye are in 3 simple but comfortable double occupancy cabañas on stilts overlooking the Home Flat to the east. Each cabaña is furnished with 2 double sized platform beds with comfortable new mattresses and head board reading lights, writing table and chair, tiled floors, cathedral ceilings to help keep the cabañas cool, fully tiled private baths with hot and cold water. Each is fronted by a private veranda with hammock and two Adirondack style deck chairs overlooking the water. For 2009, Charlie is converting the current clubhouse to a 2-bedroom, quad occupancy cabaña suite to increase occupancy from 6 to 10 guests.

The new dining room/clubhouse will feature an open-air deck & dining area overlooking the water where anglers enjoy a relaxing happy hour before sitting down to one of Tarpon Caye’s signature Caribbean Gourmet dinners. Charlie (an excellent chef himself) recruits only the very best chefs from the mainland and oversees the menu. The food is outstanding!

Power on the island is generated full 110 volt so your DVD player or other appliances will plug right in. The main generator is shut down at 9:00 pm but a 12 volt system provides ample electric lighting throughout the night. Note: a new solar power system is anticipated for 2009 which will give 110 volt service 24/7.

A pump driven 12,000 gallon rain water storage system provides ample water pressure to all the cabañas. For communications, the lodge provides free Internet service (WiFi is planned for the 2008/2009 season), free incoming calls to the lodge, and use of the phone to make outgoing calls using a prepaid phone card (available on the Caye). The new bar will even have satellite television for those who can’t live without their CNN!

When not fishing, eating or otherwise relaxing, guests may enjoy the complimentary use the lodge’s sea kayaks or snorkeling equipment. Optional snorkeling or diving charters may be arranged for non-fishing guests.

Travel to Tarpon Caye is through international arrival in Belize City followed by a 40 minute Tropic Air flight to Placencia. Guests are met at the airport and driven to Tarpon Caye’s 28 foot boat launch for the 45 minute boat transfer to the Caye.

Venezuela

Los Roques

At Los Roques it is “business as usual” and that means the flats have been rested and the bonefish are eager! Chip Bates of Angler Adventures traveled to Los Roques in early July 2003 and reports that the political situation in Caracas has stabilized, the economy is regaining strength and the Venezuelan’s are anxious to receive tourists.

Some things do get better with age, like the bonefishing at Los Roques. This atoll is now a National Park. The numbers of outfitters have been limited, but the bonefish are thriving. Politics kept anglers away last year. Our outfitter, Sight Cast, bats 100% on customer satisfaction. This is an exotic destination for wading flats, a lot closer than Christmas Island or Seychelles. From mid January through mid October, Los Roques is one of the great destinations to stalk bonefish on foot. Like Christmas Island, all fishing is done wading. Los Roques is a spectacularly beautiful coral and sand atoll, 80 miles off the Venezuelan north coast. The flats are pristine an loaded with bonefish from small to large, as well as some tarpon and permit. Outfitting is provided by Sight Cast at Acuarela Lodge.

Guri Lake

Few experiences in angling can compare with the savage explosion of a peacock bass striking a top water lure or fly. Guri Lake is Venezuela’s most well-known peacock fishery. Guri’s fish will average 6 – 7 pounds, but double digit fish (up to 20 + pounds) are here as well. Guri is outfitted by Chapi Sportfishing’s Paovon Lodge, located on the southern shore of the lake. We also expect to hear good things from Jacob Elias (former owner of the original Guri Lodge) who is now operating a 65-foot houseboat, the Peacock Princess. Jacob has refurbished his fleet of Ranger bass boats and can now accommodate up to 8 anglers. The Peacock Princess offers the advantage of being able to move “the lodge” to the best fishing throughout the season.

La Guaira Bank

Eleven miles northeast of the beach resort village of Caraballeda, an underwater mountain range rises from depths of 300 – 500 fathoms to peaks within 45 fathoms of the surface.

Deep oceanic currents collide with this structure producing an upwelling from the nutrient rich depths, concentrating the food chain on the surface. The result is one of the world’s greatest fisheries for blue marlin, white marlin and sailfish, known as La Guaira Bank.

While “The Bank” produces all three species year round (and broadbill swordfish in the summer), the most popular seasons are September through November for white marlin, and March – May for best numbers of blues.

Rio Chico

Tacarigua Lagoon near the town of Rio Chico hosts a fantastic baby tarpon fishery. These fish range in size from 3 – 10 pounds and at times (particularly the fall months) tarpon to 50 + pounds are available. This is a fishery well suited to light tackle and fly rodders. It’s not unusual to jump 30, 40 or 50 of these mini-silver kings in a day. Rio Chico makes an interesting side trip following a Los Roques or a billfishing package.

Guatemala

Guatemala is without question the Sailfishing Capital of the World. Guatemalan fishing boats typically average 15 – 20 sailfish bites per day, year round and during hot bites, it’s not unusual to raise 30, 40 or 50 or more sailfish in a single day. The incredible numbers of sailfish have attracted some of the world’s top international offshore captains to Guatemala and a fleet of comfortable and well equipped sportfishing boats. The top boats release over 2,000 sailfish a year.

Guatemala sailfish average 70 to 90 pounds and commonly exceed 100 pounds, especially are during the fall months. Much of the fishing takes place only 10 to 20 miles offshore.

But fishing in Guatemala in not just about sailfish – marlin, dorado (mahi mahi), and yellowfin tuna are the most common offshore species in Guatemala, and roosterfish are taken inshore. While not as abundant as sailfish, blue marlin are caught on a regular basis. They average 250 to 400 pounds, but larger fish in the 800 pound range have been released.

It’s not unusual to encounter large schools of dorado running from 10 to 40 + pounds.These acrobatic gamefish are great fun on light tackle or 9-weight fly rods. But keep a sharp eye – big marlins are frequently found underneath these dorado schools!

There’ve been a lot of changes in Iztapa, Guatemala since Capt. Hank Robbins pioneered this incredible fishery in the early 80’s. While there are many more boats, the fishing seems to get better. Incredible records have been set in recent years, like the legendary Capt. Ron Hamlin’s astounding 124 sailfish release day on the Captain Hook, or Capt. Chris Scheeder’s 57 sailfish on the fly in one day. Most importantly, the government of Guatemala has recognized the immense value of the resource, passing legislation not only mandating catch and release for sails, but making it illegal to possess any sailfish, effectively protecting the species from any commercial harvest. Such forward thinking will assure that the fishing for sailfish in Guatemala will remain the best in the world for many years to come.
