World-Class Fishing in Piñas Bay, Panama

Tropic Star Lodge is located in the remote and pristine Piñas Bay, Darien Province, Panama. This world-renowned fishing destination offers exceptional opportunities for both offshore big game fishing and inshore light tackle angling. The lodge’s proximity to the legendary Zane Grey Reef, just 20 minutes away, ensures quick access to some of the most productive fishing grounds in the Pacific.

    Offshore Big Game Fishing

Piñas Bay is famous for its world-class big game fishing. Black Marlin can be targeted year-round, with peak season occurring in January and February when these magnificent fish are most abundant. During these months, anglers regularly encounter Black Marlin weighing 300 to 600 pounds, with some trophy fish exceeding 800 pounds. Blue Marlin are also abundant, particularly from June through September and in December, with fish commonly weighing 200 to 400 pounds.

Sailfish are another highlight of the offshore fishery, with large specimens regularly exceeding 100 pounds. The waters around Piñas Bay also hold impressive Yellowfin Tuna, typically ranging from 100 to 250 pounds, and Dorado (Mahi-Mahi) averaging 50 to 60 pounds. Wahoo are also available throughout the year, providing additional excitement for offshore anglers.

    Inshore Light Tackle Fishing

The inshore fishery at Tropic Star Lodge is equally impressive, with Roosterfish being the star attraction. These powerful fish are abundant from March through May, with some specimens exceeding 70 pounds. The annual Roosterfish Tournament in May showcases the incredible size and abundance of these fish. Cubera Snapper, Bluefin Trevally, Broomtail Grouper, and Almaco Jack are also readily available, providing excellent light tackle action.

Tarpon can be found in the backwaters and brackish areas, offering fly anglers exciting opportunities. The inshore fishery includes over 17 additional species, ensuring that anglers always have multiple targets available.

    Fishing Seasons & Packages

Black Marlin Season (January – February)

January and February represent the peak season for Black Marlin at Tropic Star Lodge. This is the most sought-after time to visit, and bookings should be made 1-2 years in advance due to high demand. During this season, only 7-night, 6-day fishing packages are available, reflecting the premium nature of this fishery. In addition to Black Marlin, anglers can also target Blue Marlin, large Sailfish (over 100 pounds), Yellowfin Tuna (100-250 pounds), and Dorado (50-60 pounds).

    Inshore Season (March – May)

The Inshore Season offers flexible package lengths with options for 3-day, 4-day, or 6-day fishing packages. March features big Yellowfin Tuna and excellent inshore fishing. April offers record-sized Roosterfish and other inshore game fish. May is highlighted by the annual Roosterfish Tournament, with abundant Roosterfish, Cubera Snapper, Bluefin Trevally, and Grouper available. This season is perfect for anglers seeking world-class inshore action.

Blue Marlin Season (June – September & December)

June and July are excellent for big Roosterfish, with some fish exceeding 70 pounds. July is one of the best months overall, with Black Marlin, Blue Marlin, Sailfish, and Dorado all abundant, and Grand Slams being common. August offers big Blue Marlin and Sailfish, with some Black Marlin closer inshore. September can be excellent for Black Marlin, Blue Marlin, and Sailfish, with an excellent offshore bite for large Yellowfin Tuna and Dorado. December is a great all-around month for most species, including Black Marlin, Blue Marlin, Sailfish, Yellowfin Tuna, and Dorado.

    Luxury Accommodations & Facilities

Tropic Star Lodge accommodates up to 45 guests in 23 spacious, air-conditioned rooms and villas. Each accommodation features private baths and views of either the ocean or tropical gardens. The lodge offers a range of options from double-occupancy standard rooms to upgraded villas, including two-bedroom and three-bedroom villas, as well as newly-built private residences.

The crown jewel of the accommodations is “The Palace,” a luxurious three-bedroom villa with master suites and panoramic views of Piñas Bay. This exceptional property provides ample space and comfort for larger groups, making it ideal for families or groups of friends traveling together.

Wine service is included with dinner, and the attentive wait-staff ensures a memorable dining experience. Each boat is equipped with GPS navigation, VHF radios, custom tuna tubes, and live baitwells designed for both inshore and offshore fishing.

The experienced local captains and mates are among the best in the business. Many are second or third-generation fishermen who have spent their lives on these waters. Tranquility Hill Fishing Lodge

    Updated on

Tranquility Hill Fishing Lodge is situated on top of a hill, overlooking the Eastern entrance of the North Bight, near Behring Point, Andros Island, Bahamas. Tranquility Hill’s location gives bonefishermen quick access to miles and miles of virgin flats and the numerous Cays of North Bight. Large numbers of bonefish averaging 3-6 pounds roam these flats. Plenty of fish in the 6- to 9-pound class can be found, and there are good chances at double-digit fish. Tranquility Hill also has wadable flats directly in front of the lodge and around the dock, where bonefish can be caught tailing, if the tide is right. The bonefishing waters of Middle and South Bights are less than an hour boat ride.

Tranquility Hill is a well run Bahamian Lodge. In early 2013, they upgraded and “resized” the lodge. The new configuration reduced the number of rooms to 5 spacious double rooms, each with 2 double beds, and 3 slightly smaller single rooms with double beds. Each room has a new couch/sitting area with 32 inch flat screen TV, small refrigerator, coffee maker and new quiet AC units. Also added is a brand new “Cottage” with 2 double bedrooms, common sitting area and kitchenette, for groups of 4 anglers.

Outside is a new rod rack/ washing station with a rigging area. The dining room / common area includes a comfortable couch, satellite TV, bathrooms, and 2 tables to enjoy some delicious meals. The bar is a separate building with a patio. Hors d’oeuvres are served in the bar every afternoon along with Kalik’s, Exotic Caribbean cocktails, including Bahama Mama’s and Goombay Smashes, plus a wide selection of brand name liquors. This is a great place to sip your favorite cocktail, or the beer of the Bahamas, Kalik, while watching the sunset over the North Bight.

In addition to the many bonefish flats, there are numerous creeks and lakes, which could offer opportunities for record size Tarpon, Grey Snapper and Jacks or you may choose to fish the three “Sunken Rocks” where you find large quantities of Barracudas, Permits, Spanish Mackerels and Mutton Snappers or you may choose to fish off the third largest reef in the world for Dolphins, Marlins, Tunas, Kingfish, Wahoo, or the Graceful Sail Fish, just five minutes away from Tranquility Hill.

If you have any special fishing desires (you want to wade, target big bones or tarpon, etc.), please tell Ray Mackey your preferences upon arrival. That way your guide can discuss the options with you based on current conditions, and then work your requests into his overall plan for your trip.

Tranquility Hill’s chef, Cora Neymour, prepares delicious meals with a homemade feel and a Bahamian flare. Dinners are typically comprised fresh seafood, however Cora’s menu also offers barbecued chicken, ribs and steaks, as well as Bahamian specialties like homemade Johnny Cake, conch chowder, peas and rice, and baked spicy macaroni and cheese. The homemade bread, served with each meal, will have guests asking to take a few loaves home.

President Raymond Mackey, who started Tranquility Hill Fishing Lodge with legendary Andros guide, Ivan Neymor, leads the Tranquility Hill staff and guides. Prior to Ivan’s passing in September 2008, Ivan and Ray had over fifty years of experience guiding on Andros Island, making finding fish second nature. Ray Mackey capably continues the tradition leading one of the deepest and most complete guide rosters in the Bahamas, most of whom were trained by Tranquility Hill. Beyond catching fish, Tranquility Hill stresses the importance of having knowledgeable and friendly guide in any fishing situation. The guides at Tranquility Hill will greet you with an eager smile and can-do attitude the first day on the dock and will make every effort to give you the type of fishing experience you most want.

World-Class Flats Fishing at Deep Water Cay Club

Deep Water Cay Club offers bonefishing as good as can be found in the Bahamas. The wadeable flats are hard-packed white sand, and the bones are easy to spot. Bonefish average 4-5 pounds up to 14 pounds. An estimated 250 miles of flats are within an hour’s boat ride of the Lodge.

There is also a flat within walking distance of the lodge for independent fishing. This and many other flats are wadeable at the lower stages of the tide. The three hour tidal difference between the east and west ends of the cay enable guests to fish medium to low tides and locate bonefish all day.

In addition to great bonefishing, there are good numbers of barracuda and sharks on the flats, as well as snapper, jacks and sometimes tarpon (not commonly) in the deeper cuts that dissect the cays. Two of the notable permit hot spots are Burrows Cay (30 minutes) and Moores Island (1 hour) by boat from the lodge. Both areas hold big permit averaging 28 to 34 pounds. The club permit record is 46 pounds. Mutton snapper and cudas can also be found on these flats.

    Offshore and Reef Fishing

Besides the world class flats fishery, Deep Water Cay offers excellent offshore and reef fishing. From the Fall through the Spring, Wahoo, Sailfish, White and Blue Marlin, Mahi Mahi, and Tuna are found in the nearby Northwest Providence Channel, a short run for the Club’s 33-foot World Cat center console sportfisherman.

Reef fishing is also close by – less than a mile offshore. Grouper, snapper and barracuda are the commonly caught fish, and the action can be fast and furious. Reef fishing is a perfect activity for everyone, and remains strong year ’round.

    Lodge Accommodations and Amenities

Deep Water Cay Club accommodates a maximum of twenty-two guests in oceanfront cottage rooms, which offer great views of the blue waters surrounding Grand Bahama. The well-appointed cottages are freshly painted and refurbished with all new bed and towel linens, air conditioning units, storm-proof front doors, fly rod racks and porches. Each cottage is clean and well-maintained and contain two full size beds, mini-fridge, coffee maker and walk-in closet for your convenience. Oceanfront porches with Teak Steamer Chairs complete the appointments.

The Founders Cottage and Drake House offer an even more spacious option for groups of four. Each has 2 bedrooms, full kitchen with dining areas, sitting and living room. Each offer great views from a wrap-around, beach-front veranda. These are a nice option for families or parties of 4.

Added to the original lodge in 1996, the DWCC Clubhouse elevated Deep Water Cay Club to the position of one of the most prominent fishing lodges in the world. With views of both sunrise and sunset, the lodge contains a dining room, kitchen, restrooms, a cocktail bar with fishing photos and fishing log book, a living room/library, a game room equipped with a poker table, pool table, backgammon, computer with access to high-speed internet as well as a fully equipped fly tying table.

Attached to the lodge is a covered walkway to the Barracuda Bar, which overlooks the infinity pool and includes a grill room for parties/events, a flat screen TV, as well as a workout facility.

    Dining and Activities

DWCC’s cuisine includes fresh seafood grouper, snapper, lobster as well as that all time favorite, conch. In addition to superb seafood, traditional fare such as roast rack of lamb with crusty rosemary potatoes is served.

Other activities and amenities include bottom fishing, shelling, birding, jogging and walking, beaching, swimming, snorkeling, massage and fitness center. There are thatched umbrella-like covered areas for shade located directly in front of the lodge. There is a saltwater infinity swimming pool with lounge chairs nearby or you can swim just off the shore west of the main dock.

    Professional Guide Staff

Deep Water Cay Club employs a highly professional staff of Bahamas bonefishing guides including Mervin, Walter, Meko, Wendy, Joe T, Cecil, Simeon, Steve, Randy, and Mike T. who carry on the Pinder legacy, founded at Deep Water Cay Club. All are conscientious and knowledgeable about how to fish with bait or flies.

The service at Deep Water Cay Club is old fashioned in the best sense of the word. As with most Caribbean resorts, there is a noticeable informality in the way things are run, but activities are punctual. Breakfast begins at 7:30 a.m. The fishing day lasts from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

    Crooked Island Lodge

    Updated on

Crooked Island Lodge has a lot of fishable water close by and it isn’t all just bonefish! There are extensive systems of interior creek and lagoon areas that have big bonefish, an assortment of snapper, barracuda and small grouper, some permit and the occasional small to medium sized tarpon – all catchable on a fly rod or spinning gear.

Towards the outer edges of the islands, out in the Bight, it’s entirely different fishing: poling or wading crystal-clear sand flats, which hold thousands of school-size (2-4 pound) bones. Along the edges of the mangroves on a high tide you’ll again find larger single and double bonefish nosing through the roots and marl.

Species: Bonefish (2-4 lbs, some larger), snapper (mutton, mangrove, yellowtail), barracuda, permit, tarpon, grouper, wahoo, blue and white marlin, tuna, mahi-mahi, jacks, sharks

Location: Northernmost tip of Crooked Island, Southern Bahamas

    Flats Fishing

The beach in front of the lodge offers excellent fishing opportunities for jacks, small permit, grouper, snapper and such with the fly rod. If you’re willing to use a spinning rod or can cast a needlefish fly a considerable distance, you can also catch barracuda up to 5 feet long, either casting from the skiff, trolling behind the skiff or fishing from shore.

The fishing can be fantastic for bonefish that haven’t seen enough pressure to become spooky yet, averaging 2-4 pounds, with some much larger fish on certain flats, tailing or cruising alone or in pairs. Besides bonefish, there are lots of snapper (mutton, mangrove, yellowtail), jacks, some big permit, a few tarpon, ocean triggerfish and tons of barracuda. Photographers will want to catch a bonefish within view of some of the thousands of Flamingos that inhabit this part of the Bahamas.

    Offshore Fishing

If you like the big fish – the offshore stuff – the lodge operates a completely equipped boat. Offshore fishing with Captain Robbie Gibson is incredible. The lodge is fishing water that no other sport fishing boats are touching. Daily catches may exceed thirty fish and are not uncommon. Fall & Winter are excellent for wahoo and mackerel and some tuna. Spring & winter are excellent for tuna, dolphin (mahi mahi), and marlin. Wahoo and mackerel are also good.

At the hotel, there is a picture of this fellow holding a wahoo that scaled reliably at 148 pounds. That’s a damn big wahoo. Billfish, tuna, dorado and other offshore species abound (seasonally) just a mile or less from shore or you can arrange longer excursions to productive offshore fishing spots for the day or a sleep over trip to the renowned Diana Banks.

For fly-casters looking for deep water fish, the lodge has been experimenting successfully with live baiting big jack crevale, horseyed jacks, amberjacks, mutton snapper, dorado and tuna. Live baiting involves releasing live pilchards to attract schooling fish to the boat and then casting flies. Bring your 10-12 weight rods and big deceiver patterns if you’d like to try this (subject to availability of the big boat and access to the live bait).

    Reef Fishing

Light tackle or inshore fishing is very popular and highly productive with all our guests. Fishing in about 100 ft. of water produces nice catches of grouper, snapper, hard fighting jacks, mackerel, sharks, and cudas. Guests are invited to bring their catch back to the hotel, where the experienced and skilled Crooked Island Lodge chef will prepare your catch for dinner at the Sunset Bar & Grill. Chumming, jigging and live bait techniques are used for inshore fishing. Excellent catches are available all year long. Because of the low population density (the total population of Acklins/Crooked Islands is less than 1,000), the reefs have barely been touched.

    The Lodge

The setting is lovely – a very dramatic bit of coastline with beautiful beaches and shells, great reef fishing 10 yards from shore and a 30-minute run to the flats. The hotel itself is informal, not luxurious, but modern and comfy, quiet, small and nicely tree-shaded. There are 12 rooms in 3 villas, a separate dining area, a beach cabana where dinners and lunches are sometimes served, a bar and a private airfield. The nearest village is about a mile away. The Crooked Islanders are wonderful, dignified people with big smiles; quiet, polite, religious and good-humored.

Crooked Island Lodge offers eight air-conditioned hotel rooms, each featuring two double beds, a private bath, sitting area, microwave, coffee maker, and mini-fridge. These rooms provide spectacular sunset views. Six private cottages are also available, equipped with two double beds, a private bath, seating and dining area, and a kitchenette that includes a refrigerator/freezer, microwave, and coffee maker. Private patios overlook the marina.

    Dining & Activities

The Sunset Bar & Grill, located steps from the main lodge, offers incredible views of Bird Rock Lighthouse and is named for the magnificent sunsets enjoyed almost nightly. The restaurant serves fresh, locally caught seafood such as grouper, snapper, tuna, mahi-mahi, lobster, and conch, prepared in traditional Bahamian recipes. Breakfast includes fresh coffee, juices, fruit, pastries, breakfast meats, and eggs cooked to order. Lunch options are available for individuals and groups, with “cooler lunches” prepared for those fishing or exploring. Dinner features hearty portions of locally influenced dishes, accompanied by homemade breads and desserts. Special dietary requests can be accommodated with advance notice.

The lodge overlooks Bird Rock Lighthouse, surrounded by an extensive reef system. Guests can snorkel steps away from their rooms or experience unique “wall diving” just off the beach. Sea kayak tours of the coast and visits to the historic lighthouse are available. Self-guided snorkeling is also an option.

The lodge features a 35-slip marina accommodating vessels up to 160 feet, with amenities such as high-quality RO water, full electrical hookups, and fuel services available daily.

    Getting There

Crooked Island is located in the southern Bahamas, a 1 hour and 15 minute flight south of Nassau. Bahamas Air services the island from Nassau twice per week (Wednesdays and Saturdays), landing at Colonel Hill Airport, a 4,000′ airstrip on the southwest portion of the island, approximately a 30-minute drive to Crooked Island Lodge. For a more convenient travel option, charter flights can also be arranged. Crooked Island Lodge has a 3,500′ private airstrip which makes it ideal for private planes as well as charter flights.

The beach in front of the lodge, the fishing can sometimes be quite good for jacks, small permit, grouper, snapper and such with the fly rod. If you’re willing to use a spinning rod or can cast a needlefish fly a considerable distance, you can also catch barracuda up to 5 feet long, either casting from the skiff, trolling behind the skiff or fishing from shore.

    Off Shore

If you like the big fish – the offshore stuff – the lodge operates a completely equipped boat. Offshore fishing with Captain Robbie Gibson is incredible. The lodge is fishing water that no other sport fishing boats are touching. Daily catches may exceed thirty fish and are not uncommon. Fall & Winter are excellent for wahoo and mackerel and some tuna. Spring & winter are excellent for tuna, dolphin (mahi mahi), and marlin. Wahoo and mackerel are also good.

The fishing can be fantastic for bonefish that haven’t seen enough pressure to become spooky yet, averaging 2 – 4 pounds, with some much larger fish on certain flats, tailing or cruising alone or in pairs.

  • Golfito Sailfish Rancho

    Golfito Sailfish Rancho

Situated on Costa Rica’s beautiful southern Pacific coast in Puntarenas Province near the mouth of Golfo Dulce, the newly refurbished Golfito Sailfish Rancho (GSR) is Central America’s hottest new fishing destination.

Golfito Sailfish Rancho first opened in January 1989 and  first received international attention in Salt Water Sportsman editor Barry Gibson’s feature article in the July 1989 issue.

Golfito Sailfish Rancho“Grab Bag at Golfito” was a glowing account of  Barry’s March 19 – 23, 1989 trip to Golfito Sailfish Rancho recounting not only the wonderful fishing for sails, blue and black marlin, but peppered with  photos of 200 pound yellowfin tuna, 50 + pound roosterfish and huge cubera snapper, the story emphasized the amazing diversity of this fishery. For the first 4 years, Golfito Sailfish Rancho  was one of the most popular and successful sport fishing operations in Costa Rica.Unfortunately, the Rancho became the victim of a divorce settlement and by 1993, operations and equipment were quickly deteriorating.
The property was subsequently sold and resold – opened and closed several times.  It seemed as if no one possessed the resources or inclination to put the Rancho back on her feet, until recently.
In 1998 GSR was purchased by American Betsy Bullard an ardent and well-traveled offshore angler.   Betsy has exhibited a firm commitment to making GSR better than ever. The first step was to scrap the war-worn 23-foot Makos and start from scratch with a fleet of 10 brand new 27-foot Ocean Masters powered by 300 hp Yanmar diesels, with a cruising speed of 32 mph. All the boats are fully equipped with VHF radios, GPS, fish finder, live bait well, tuna tubes, outriggers, head and top of the line Penn International and Shimano tackle. While sails were the main attraction, the area also supports good numbers of  blue and black marlin and the occasional striped marlin.  The inshore fishing in these waters is some of the best in Costa Rica, particularly for roosterfish (largest caught 85 lbs.) and giant cubera (Pacific dog) snapper.  Other species available include: dorado; yellowfin tuna; big eye tuna; wahoo; rainbow runner; grouper; bluefin trevally; amberjack; jack crevalle; black snook and more!  It’s not unusual for guests to boat 10, 12 or more different species during their trip. Another beautiful Golfito Sail!
Golfito Sailfish Rancho can accommodate 20 guests in 10 double rooms each of which is located on the beach just steps away from the Golfo Dulce.  The rooms are large with plenty of closet and storage  space, ceiling fans, and a porch overlooking the pier and beach. Each room has its own tiled bathroom with an oversized, walk-in lighted shower.

~ GOLFITO SAILFISH RANCHO, COSTA RICA ~
A cascading waterfall directly behind the lodge powers a waterwheel which augments the electrical supply at Golfito Sailfish Rancho.  The heart of the lodge is the spectacular main dining room where the bountiful meals are served. Constructed of cristobal and other rare native Costa Rican woods, the open dining area with its unrestricted views of the beautiful cove and surrounding jungle habitat is a showplace among fishing lodges.

Golfito Sailfish Rancho offers fishing packages from 3 days to as many as you’d like (see rate sheet, below). The 2006-2007 rate for a typical 5 fishing day package costs $3,695 per person based on 2 anglers sharing a double room and boat.

  • Panama

    Panama

Legend has it that outdoor adventure writer Zane Grey “discovered” the great black marlin fishing off the reef (now known as the Zane Grey Reef) on Piñas Bay. Historians disagree, but most everyone agrees that Piñas Bay is one of the world’s finest black marlin fisheries. The blacks of Piñas usually range from 300 – 600 pounds and the best time of year is from mid-January through mid-March. Blues and striped marlin start running in March and from April through early June Piñas has fantastic sailfishing. Tropic Star Lodge is a world class lodge overlooking Piñas Bay and offers the best access to this fishery aboard their fleet of 31-foot Bertrams. Besides billfish, Piñas offers wahoo, dorado, tuna, and wonderful “rock” fishing for roosters, snappers and other inshore species.

  • Tamarindo Sportfishing

A pioneer of sportfishing in Costa Rica, Randy Wilson choseTamarindo Beach as his home base because of its ideal location. Situated on the western tip of the northwest Pacific coast, Tamarindo offers the shortest running time to blue water beyond the Continental Shelf, and offers a large variety of species 12 months of the year.

Randy, who began fishing these waters in 1974, is widely acknowledged as one of Costa Rica’s top captains. Randy has guided both conventional and flyfishermen to numerous IGFA World Records. Among his numerous accomplishments, he holds the Costa Rica all tackle record for black marlin with a 956 pound specimen hooked on Tamarindo Reef, 10 minutes from the beach.

He specializes in fishing artificials and enjoys teaching anglers his manual drop back technique. This is a very visual and fun method to hook billfish and most anglers become converts once they’ve seen how effective it is!

Talking Fish mates wire a big blue marlin caught by Angler Adventures’ client, Bob Auster.

Tamarindo is one of Costa Ricas most fertile fishing areas and is definitely the best area for marlin. An April 97 Salt Water Sportsman article. “20 Top Spots for Blue Marlin” included Tamarindo twice, identifying January – March, Punta Guiones to Tamarindo, and August – November, Tamarindo to Gulf of Papagayo, as among the world’s best venues for blue marlin. You can add black marlin, striped marlin, yellowfin tuna to 300 + lbs., dorado, wahoo, roosterfish, Pacific Dog snapper, and one of the world’s best sailfisheries to the mix.

Traditionally, April through September are excellent for sails, marlin, tuna and dolphin. The seas are calm, and afternoon showers are common. October through December sees the transition between rainy season and dry season here, and we catch a variety of species. December through March can be windy, and boats usually run about 45 minutes to the south to get to the good fishing out of the wind. Marlin, and large yellowfin tuna are plentiful then, as well as sailfish.

  • JP Sportfishing

The fertile waters off of Quepos, on Costa Rica’s south central Pacific coast, hold the greatest concentrations of sailfish during the winter dry season, (which Ticos refer to as their “summer”), which is from December – April. During this time of year, it’s not unusual to raise 10 – 20 + sailfish daily. Dorado, yellowfin and bigeye tuna, roosterfish and an assortment of other in and offshore species are plentiful. Marlin (blue, black & striped), while not abundant in this area, are also an everyday possibility.

The Quepos winter season was first exploited by Sportfishing Costa Rica in the 1988/89 season. The initial “fleet” that first season, was a pair of 22 foot Boston Whalers. As word spread about this fabulous winter fishery, the Quepos fleet steadily grew. As December – April was off-season for sails in the northern Costa Rica areas such as Flamingo, captains in that area began moving their boats down to Quepos for the winter season there.

In recent years, there have been as many as 45 – 50 boats ranging from 25 – 36 foot, fishing out of Quepos, from December – April.

The oldest sportfishing operations in Quepos is JP Sportfishing Tours (JPT). Owned and operated by Jeannette Perez and her sons, JPT is a cooperative of some of the top boats working in Quepos. All JPT boats are equipped with outriggers, live well, fighting chair, tower, full electronics and top of the line Penn Int’l and Shimano tackle. All these captains have years of experience fishing Costa Rican waters with both fly and conventional methods. Click here to see the full fleet.

While JP Sportfishing Tours was founded in 1993, Jeannette Perez worked as operations manager for Sportfishing Costa Rica from 1988 until forming JPT in May of 1993. She brings over 20 years experience hosting international anglers.

In mid-May, JPT moves a portion of their operation north to Flamingo and offer packages in both areas. Also, custom trips to Drake Bay/Cano Island are available out of Quepos.

JPT offers standard packages on top quality boats at very competitive prices, or can customize packages to suit most clients’ needs.

  • 57 Sailfish on a Fly in One Day in Guatemala

57 Sailfish on a Fly in One Day in Guatemala

One of most exciting moments in flyrodding is watching an 8-foot long sailfish, lit up with neon and iridescent blues and greens, charge into the spread thrashing his bill trying to destroy your teaser bait! Your heart pounds as you await the call for “neutral” so you can pitch a 9-inch hot pink fly at this psychedelic beast. And when he pounces on your fly and tears off at 65 miles per hour, you’ll know beyond any doubt you’re attached to one of the world’s greatest gamefish.

While there are a number of destinations where you can fulfill this fantasy, Guatemala is the undisputed Sailfish Capital of the World. In the past 25 years, as sportfishing evolved in this country, Guatemala has turned the sportfishing world upside down, shattering records with astounding numbers like Capt Ron Hamlin’s 126 sailfish releases in a single day, or Capt Chris Sheeder’s 57 sailfish on fly in a single day!

And today, anglers can enjoy this incredible fishery, from the comfort of world class Gameboats with world class captains and top shelf accommodations at the beautiful Casa Vieja Lodge. Casa Vieja is comparable to any of the world’s finest fishing lodges with spacious and luxurious accommodations and amenities, 5-star cuisine and a pampering staff.

Casa Vieja’s fleet is comprised of 6 fully rigged, state of the art sportfishermen ranging from 37 to 40 feet, skippered by some of the world’s most respected blue water captains. And new this season are 2 superfast 35 foot Contender center consoles offering smaller groups a more economical alternative to experience this incredible fishery. All the Casa Vieja boats are equipped with top of the line conventional and fly tackle. Just bring yourself!

Besides incredible numbers of sails, Guatemala provides opportunities for marlin, dorado, tuna, roosterfish and more. Click or Tap here for more information on Casa Vieja Lodge.

    Costa Rica

Costa Rica is a great alternative, particularly for families interested in both fishing and non-fishing experiences. Prior to the discovery of the Guatemala sailfishery, Costa Rica was considered the premier Pacific sailfishery, and also offers a broader diversity of species.

    Crocodile Bay Resort

Crocodile Bay Lodge on Golfo Dulce is a great choice both for hard core anglers and families looking for a vacation, as well as a fishing trip. Situated minutes from the entrance to Corcovado National Park, Crocodile Bay offer a wide range of non-fishing activities ranging from ecotours to zip lines to sailing, surfing, paddleboarding, or just relaxing by the Olympic size pool or being pampered by a treatment at the lodge’s 4,000 sq. foot Spa! JP Sportfishing

Further north lies the beach resort town of Quepos, also a great fishing destination set in a charming village flanked by world class resort hotels and some of Costa Rica’s most spectacular beaches in nearby Manuel Antonio National Park. We’ve worked with JP Sportfishing of Quepos for over 25 years. They have a great fleet of 32 foot class day boats with experienced crews, and feature relatively short runs to blue water and the abundant sailfish found there from December through April. And for those looking for a customized, privately guided tour experience, Rudy Guzman’s Fiesta Tours has been dazzling Angler Adventures’ clients with incredible tours and unparalleled personalized service for over 25 years.
