    Alphonse Island Fishing Company

Fly Fishing Alphonse, St. Francois & Bijoutier Atolls

    Alphonse Island

    Overview

Alphonse Island has been one of the world’s elite flats fishing destinations for over 20 years. In addition to bonefishing where 20, 30 or even 40 fish days are possible, it boasts the world’s top fly fishing for milkfish and excellent fishing for dozens of other species.

    More about Alphonse Island Resort

Alphonse Island Resort has continued to improve the remote, exotic luxury island facilities that makes it one of the most comfortable and elegant options available today. When you add exclusive access for a maximum of 12 anglers per week to this pristine, magnificent flats fishing eden, Alphonse Island Resort should be on every serious angler’s must-visit list.

The Seychelles consist of dozens of islands stretching hundreds of miles north of Madagascar. These islands are a mixture of spectacular, lush, mountainous granite outcroppings and low-lying atolls, typical of coral atolls elsewhere in the world, such as the Turneffe Islands, Los Roques and Christmas Island.

The three islands serviced by the Alphonse Island Resort are Alphonse, Bijoutier and St. Francois. They offer rich marine life and complete isolation. None of these islands have permanent residents.

St. Francois: 10,000 acres of sand flats

The uniqueness that sets St Francois apart from many other saltwater destinations is the ability to wade over 10 000 acres more than 15 miles of hard white sand flats in search of the various species on offer. In addition to the abundant bonefish flats, the lagoon envelopes coral finger flats and coral heads allowing anglers to catch several of the now 60 species targeted on fly, including three species of triggerfish, seven species of trevally, milkfish, barracuda, sailfish, dogtooth tuna, yellowfin tuna and a plethora of other flats and offshore species. Sight fishing for giant trevally is one of the most exhilarating forms of fly fishing one will ever experience, especially when they grow in excess of 150 lbs!

For daily fishing, the Alphonse Island Fishing Company transports clients the several miles between Alphonse Island and St. Francois Island in a 40-foot catamaran. Guides then take each pair of anglers among a multitude of diverse flats around St. Francois. Some fishing, such as casting to drop offs for trevally, rainbow runners or dogtooth tuna, is done from the skiff. Otherwise, virtually all the fishing at St. Francois is done wading.

    Bonefishing in Alphonse

There is quality bonefishing on Alphonse Island (there are flats within walking distance of the lodge), but the bonefishing on the larger flats around St. Francois is the focal point. Bonefish around Alphonse and St. Francois average 3-5 pounds, but guides can often find much bigger fish. Eight pounds is the upper range of the fish you will commonly find in the ankle to knee-deep water that comprises the majority of this fishery. The largest bonefish landed at Alphonse was 9.5 lbs. Bigger fish are apt to frequent deeper flats.

The most striking thing about the bonefishing in Seychelles is that under the right conditions you can stand in one spot for hours and watch hundreds of bonefish pour by in the course of a tide. If you don’t think you’re seeing enough “big” bonefish, just move. The “average day” may yield 12-15 bonefish per person. For an experienced angler, it’s possible to have 20-40 fish days!
The best months to find larger bonefish (over 8 pounds) on the flats are May and September, however, these months can be windy and are recommended for experienced casters. The fishing season runs September – May.

The flats fishing is not limited to bonefish, although the bonefishing is so good, particularly on the incoming tide, it often overshadows other species seen on the flats.

    #2 Milkfish

    (Milkies, fork-tailed devil, Bandeng, Bangos)

Milkfish are the second most prolific species on the flats aside from bonefish. Milkfish are incredibly powerful, challenging game fish, growing over 30 pounds. It is common to see 20-30 pound milkfish cruising and tailing just like a bonefish. Medium to large milkfish usually travel alone or in groups of 2-6 fish.

Unlike the bonefish, milkfish are vegetarians and will not respond to a moving fly. However, the Seychelles guides have discovered flies and techniques proven very effective on milkfish, long thought to be uncatchable on a fly. Most of the techniques and flies used to catch milkfish today were invented and perfected on Alphonse. Currently, about 90% of all milkfish released by anglers are caught at Alphonse.

    #3 GIant Trevally

(GT, Geet, Gangster of the Flats)

Giant trevally can be found on the flats occasionally, although they are more common, along with bluefin, bigeye and black trevallys, in the surf along the reef and in the deeper water of the lagoon. The majority of the trevally are in the 10-15 pound range. While trevallys have been caught up to 80 pounds, 30 pounds is the upper end of what you might encounter on a typical trip.

giant trevally seychelles farquhar atoll angler adventures clinton ct Andre 118cm v2

    But Wait … There’s More

    Barracuda, Triggerfish, African Pompano …

Also seen on the flats are barracuda, triggerfish, trevally and a few African pompano, which look and act very much like a permit. Lemon sharks patrol in good numbers and the occasional tiger shark is seen.

Deep sink line blind fished in deeper water can produce trevally, rainbow runners, dogtooth tuna, jobfish, and more. One angler even hooked a sailfish blind casting a Clouser along a drop off. The guides have nick-named this type of fishing “species bashing;” you never know what’s going to hit your fly next.

    Alphonse’ Team of Professional Guides

Alphonse Island Resort employs a team of professional, passionate and well-trained guides. This team represents dozens of years of flyfishing experience. They are enthusiastic and knowledgeable about all aspects of fly fishing and they were chosen for their good people skills.

    Astove Atoll

    Fly Fishing Adventures in SEYCHELLES:

    Astove Atoll

    Overview

Astove has become synonymous with the largest flats-caught GT’s in the Indian Ocean. Its shallow lagoon and small entrance, surrounded by sheer drop-offs makes the experience truly unique. This lagoon is a sanctuary for both juvenile and trophy-size fish that feed on the shallow white sand flats that line the inside of the lagoon. Astove is small and is surrounded by coral flats with deep drop-offs on the flats edge allowing predators easy access. Targeting tailing Indo-Pacific Permit in the lagoon is a favorite among anglers.

Not only does Astove have large GT’s but it also has an equally impressive bonefish, permit, bluefin trevally, triggerfish, barracuda and milkfish population. The offshore fishing starts only feet from the edge of the flats where you can test your tackle against species like yellowfin tuna, dogtooth tuna, wahoo and sailfish. The variety of grouper and snapper that can be caught weighted flies or sinking fly lines adds a new dimension to the amount of species you may tick off your list.

    More about Astove Atoll

Astove is situated 655 miles southwest of Mahé and forms part of the remote Aldabra group of atolls in the Indian Ocean. It’s a small and unique atoll that spans less than 4 miles from north to south and 2.5 miles from east to west at the widest points. The shallow lagoon has one small entrance, and due to its elevation a phenomenon occurs whereby the tide falls like a river for ten hours of the 12-hour tidal cycle and then turns to flood the entire lagoon in only two hours.

    The Astove Atoll Itinerary

    DAY 1
Your charter flight departs IDC Hangar, makes one stop, and then lands on Astove three hours later. On arrival you will be transferred to the lodge where orientation and tackle set up begins. After lunch you can start your fishing with an un-guided session on foot before sunset.

    DAY 2–7
Breakfast is at 7:30 AM, fishing begins at 8:30 and lunch is taken in the form of a packed lunch which is enjoyed while out on the flats. You will arrive back at the lodge by 5:30 PM but are free to continue fishing unguided until sunset.

    DAY 8
Breakfast is at 7:30 AM, you can then pack, settle your tab and gratuities, and prepare for the three-hour flight back to Mahé. The flight will land back at the IDC Hangar.

    Farquhar Atoll

    Fly fishing adventures in SEYCHELLES:

    FARQUHAR ATOLL

    Overview

Farquhar Atoll has a reputation as one of the top flats fishing destination from the exceptional diversity it offers anglers. It’s one of the only fisheries in the Seychelles where anglers can target Bumphead Parrotfish on the flats. Farquhar also provides excellent fishing for bonefish, permit, triggerfish and GT. Combine the unbelievable fishing with the remote location and the world-class service makes Farquhar a must visit location for Adventurous Anglers.

    More about Farquhar Atoll

Farquhar Atoll is the most southerly atoll in the Seychelles chain of islands lying just over 700km to the southwest of the main island Mahe. This remote atoll has a total area, including the large lagoon, of 170.5 km² which is 18 km north to south and 9 km east to west. The total island land mass is 7.5 km² with a serviced concrete landing strip situated on the most northerly island. The main group of islands form a long curve which describes the eastern side of the atoll. Largest of these are Isle du Nord and Ile du Sud, with the smaller Manaha gaps and islands between them. Further south is Goelette and to the open western side of the atoll lies the small group known as Trois Îles. The large ear-shaped lagoon provides easy access to the countless flats, channels and surf zones which make Farquhar such a diverse fishery. The flats consist of hard white sand, turtle grass and broken coral which make for comfortable wading. Farquhar has a small population of local Seychellois, whose main roles are running a small line-fish operation as well as acting as a skeleton crew which manage the island and service the airstrip.

    Accomodations: Farquhar Atoll Guesthouse

Farquhar Atoll Guesthouse is a newly rebuilt facility guesthouse which caters to up to ten anglers at one time. Anglers are accommodated in 3 twin duplex style Chalets with contain two separate bedrooms overlooking the Farquhar Lagoon. Each bedroom is fully air-conditioned, has constant hot water, ensuite bathroom with indoor and outdoor shower, 24-hour 220-volt electricity, housekeeping and daily laundry service. There is also a communal area with an exceptional dining area and fully stocked bar – the magnificent view forms an idyllic backdrop for both breakfast and dinner. All meals are served with the chef preparing a mix of Creole and international food.

Farquhar Atoll Fishing Season & The Typical Day

The season traditionally runs from September to early-April, with a break over the festive season. From May to August, the strong south-eastern monsoon winds blow incessantly. These winds bring cold water onto the flats and the combination makes fly fishing more difficult. However, some of the best GT fishing can happen early and late in the season during these transition times.

Typically anglers will be up early and after a quick breakfast head out to the flats to fish around 8 AM. Anglers stay out on the flats for the whole day taking packed lunches. One of the highlights is the Flats Lunch, where anglers can enjoy lunch and cold beverage while enjoying the unique atmosphere. The following day’s activities and schedule will be planned the night before between the guides and the clients, taking into account the tidal movements and the species anglers wish to target.

Farquhar Atoll Region, Aquatic Species, Boats & The Flats

Farquhar has over the years provided all fortunate enough to visit her shores the opportunity to fish some of the finest flats the Indian Ocean has to offer. Thanks to the guesthouse on Isle du Nord, anglers from around the globe the opportunity to fish for the wide variety of species which frequent these waters from the comfort of a lodge. Species such as Bonefish, various Trevally species including ferocious trophy sized Giant Trevally, the finicky Indo-Pacific Permit, Triggerfish, Barracuda, Bumphead Parrotfish, Napoleon Wrasse, and Milkfish call Farquhar and her rich waters home. The guides will lead you onto the flats and help you identify the desired target species, the areas which they frequent and explain the correct techniques with which to catch them.

Deep water begins very close to shore and it’s possible to fish these waters from the boats. Here the most common species encountered are Giant Trevally, Barracuda, Wahoo, Yellowfin Tuna, Dogtooth Tuna, Grouper, Bohar Snapper, Jobfish and Sailfish. All of the Farquhar fishing guides are experts in rigging, teasing and the handling of blue water fish.

Anglers will be led by a team of five world class professional guides, all of whom speak English. Each guide is a qualified skipper, has first aid experience and is extremely experienced with regards to all facets of fly fishing the remote saltwater destinations of the Indian Ocean. Their passion and dedication is infectious and rest assured they will definitely go the extra mile in search of your fish of a lifetime. Added to this, each guide has the use of one of five tender boats which are ideally designed for accessing the flats as well as allowing us to maximize the fantastic offshore fishing Farquhar has to offer.

Farquhar Atoll utilizes five brand new 17.3 ft Angler skiffs each of which carries a single 90 HP 2-Stroke Yamaha engine. The boats have been specifically designed and fitted to fish both the flats and offshore waters of the Seychelles in comfort and safety. These Angler boats have a draft of approximately 9 inches allowing us to access some extremely shallow areas of the atolls; however 99% of fishing on Farquhar is done wading the flats. These boats are also sure to make the excellent offshore fishing far more enjoyable and rewarding as all of them are equipped with a fish finder. Other added features include fly rod storage fittings, bimini tops and cushioned seats.

The hard white sand, turtlegrass or coral flats of Farquhar make for easy wading, thus separating it from other destinations in the world. As most of the fishing will be done while wading, good protective footwear is essential. Standard diver’s neoprene booties with a reinforced rubber sole are not appropriate. More protective flats wading boots must be worn. We’ll be happy to recommend appropriate wading boots and we’ll provide each client our “what to bring” list. Guests will not be taken onto the flats without proper footwear!

The Diversity of Fish Species in FARQUHAR ATOLL

    in beautiful SEYCHELLES, AFRICA

    GIant Trevally

(GT, Geet, Gangster of the Flats)

No matter what you call them, these fish have captured the imaginations of anglers everyone and are the focal point of many Seychelles fishing trips. These large apex predators create viscious, violent and visual takes and are incredibly strong fighters. The Seychelles is the premier destinations for targeting Giant Trevally.

    Bonefish

    (Albula Vulpes)

Bonefish are found in excellent numbers across the Seychelles. In some fisheries, they are the predominate game fish and the go to target species for fly anglers. In other destinations, they play a supporting role to more exotic query like Giant Trevally. Either way, the bonefishing in the Seychelles is among the best flats fly fishing available period.

    Indo-Pacific Permit

    (Giant Permit)

Permit everywhere are recognized as one of the most discerning and difficult species to target on the fly. The Indo-Pacific Permit are no different that the Atlantic counterparts, and can breed the same compulsive focus from serious anglers. Convincing an Indo-Pacific Permit to eat a well-presented crab fly is one of the most rewarding experiences, whether it’s on the coral edges of Farquhar Atoll, in the lagoon on Astove, or tailing on the flats of Cosmoledo.

    Bumphead Parrotfish

    (Bumpies, Buffalo Parrotfish)

“Bumpies” are a totally unique species found in tropical waters near coral. These fish are incredibly beautiful and strong. As a gamefish, they are unpredictable, but can be caught on the fly when feeding on or around the coral, or when they are tailing on large schools, typically on turtle grass flats. The secret is keeping the fly totally still! Bumphead Parrotfish are only found consistently on Farquhar and Providence Atolls. The vivid colors, prominent parrot-like beak, and the massive bump makes this fish recognizable in every photo.

    Milkfish

    (Milkies, fork-tailed devil, Bandeng, Bangos)

Milkies are a unique species to target because the primary flies  imitate the appearance of algae! They can grow to over 6 feet long and are extremely hard fighting fish with unusual endurance. Milkfish are also known as the fork-tailed devil, because like permit, they are extremely finicky. They’re surprisingly easy to spot when on the flats – they are usually found in small pods cruising over algae patches with their tails protruding out of the water as they feed on the bottom.

    Triggerfish

    (YELLOWMARGIN, Moustache, Picasso )

There are primarily three species of triggerfish found in Seychelles: Yellow Margin, Moustache, and Picasso. They prefer the shallow coral reefs and flats. The yellow margin triggerfish prefers sandy-bottomed areas close to patches of turtle grass and coral. It is also common to find a yellow margin close to a large coral “Bommie” situated on a white sandy flat. Remember these 3 things when fly fishing for triggerfish: Approach quietly and keep maximum distance, make your first cast count, and make your first cast count!

    Fly Fishing AdVentures in Seychelles:

    Providence Atoll

    Overview

Providence Atoll is one of the newest and hottest flats fishing venues in the Indian Ocean or the Seychelles. Providence Atoll is extremely remote, virtually untouched, and has to rank as one of the wildest fly-fishing destinations available.

The variety of fishing areas and the incredible number of species available for anglers to target makes Providence Atoll stand out. Providence has it all – schools of up to 50 GTs wreaking havoc across a turtlegrass edge, Bumphead Parrotfish waving their paddle sized-tails as they scour the bottom in search of a feed, fields of Yellowmargin and Moustache Triggerfish on the slower neap tides and supreme bonefishing – very few fall below the 5lb mark. There are populations of large bonefish on both North and Surf Islands and bonefish of 10 lb and over have been landed. The Giant Trevally fishing can equally exciting with one notable afternoon session, where a group of anglers caught as many as 35 GT’s in a few hours.

    More about Providence Atoll

According to the authorities who govern this tropical paradise when we first started sending anglers to Providence Atoll in 2015, less than 1,000 people have visited the atoll over the last 100 years.

Providence Atoll is situated 380 miles South by SouthWest of Mahe and is just short of being the most southerly atoll in the Seychelles group. This huge atoll 28.6 miles north to south and just under 10 miles, east to west (nearly three times the size of Cosmoledo Atoll).

Providence Atoll consists of two Islands, Providence North and the spectacularly beautiful Cerf Island. These are surrounded and separated by vast sandbanks, flats and channels offering anglers a diverse array of fishing scenarios. Providence offers superb flats fishing for Bonefish, Indo-Pacific Permit, Giant Trevallys, Barracuda, Milkfish, Triggerfish, and is one of the few places on the planet to target Bumphead Parrotfish on the fly. This atoll could become known as the place with the biggest Bonefish in the Seychelles.

The area between Providence North and Cerf Island holds the flats fishing jewel of the atoll. 30 miles of fishable flats, channels, cuts and lagoons that include sand and Turtlegrass flats, the surf zone and an enormous lagoon system along with the hundreds of channels and drainage areas.

OFFSHORE FISHING & Getting to PROVIDENCE ATOLL

The offshore fishery of Providence Atoll can be equally as spectacular as her flats fishing. On the western side of the atoll the drop off is extremely pronounced allowing anglers easy access to deep water. The fishing for Sailfish, Wahoo, Yellowfin, and the occasional Black Marlin is often mind-blowing. Needless to say tackle and knots are tested to the limits. Each guide is a qualified skipper, has first aid experience and is extremely experienced regarding all facets of fly fishing these remote saltwater destinations (both on the flats and in blue water). Their passion and dedication is infectious and they consistently go the extra mile for each angler.

Getting to Providence is not an easy task, which guarantees that the fishery remains wild and unspoiled. Anglers will overnight on the Seychelles main island of Mahe. The following day, the anglers will board a flight (1 hour 45 minutes) to the outer island of Farquhar, which is the closest island with an airstrip. On Farqhuar, anglers board the mother ship, which will make the 8 hour crossing to Providence Atoll, most of which is done through the night.

Tigerfish (Hydrocynus vittatus) are one of Africa’s premier freshwater game fish. The Panyame Camp on the lower Zambezi River offers anglers the opportunity to fish for these aggressive predators in some of Africa’s most majestic scenery. This particular area of the lower Zambezi River is known as the Zambezi River Valley, which has proven to be one of the world’s premier fly fishing destinations for Tigerfish.

The camp is situated on the southern bank of the Zambezi River, downstream from the confluence of the Luangwa and Zambezi Rivers, located in the Panyame Concession (private land) in western Mozambique. Anglers will have the opportunity to fish the Zambzi River, the Lake Cahora Bassa, and the delta where the Zambezi spills into Lake Cahora Bassa. The maze of channels and structure offer excellent opportunities to target Tigerfish in any weather condition or water level, and there are lots of big Tigerfish in the lower Zambezi.

The Panyame fishing area is primarily the headwaters of Lake Cahora Bassa, where the Zambezi River slows down and spreads out into channels, which vary in width from 300 feet to more than a mile. Some of the best fishing is around the larger islands in the channels, which create large floodplains with edges that attract baitfish and large numbers of Tigerfish. Sandbars and other structure that creates ideal Tigerfish habitat and prime feeding areas also break up the channels. This delta is a productive fishery because it’s situated between a gorge upstream on the Zambezi and dam downstream, concentrating the feeding Tigerfish in and around the channels. About 80% of the fishing is within 3 miles of the camp.

Panyame caters for up to eight anglers in spacious safari style tented chalets, each with two double beds (with mosquito netting), en-suite bathroom and shower, which have a constant supply of hot water. Panyame has a large central dining area for evening meals, with a comfortable lounge area providing the perfect atmosphere for a quiet drink and discussing the following days fishing. There is also a well-maintained pool over looking the mighty Zambezi to help anglers cool off after fishing.

The fishing day is broken up into morning and afternoon sessions to take advantage of the best fishing times. The average Tigerfish weights 6lbs, with anglers landing fish between 10 and 14lbs on a regular basis. All the fishing is done from an 18ft aluminum boat with a 100HP Yamaha engine. This allows anglers the opportunity to drift and fish through some of the most spectacular scenery Africa has to offer in safely due to numerous hippos and crocodiles which call this section of the Zambezi home. Besides Hippo and Crocodile, Buffalo, Kudu, Bushbuck, Warthog, Grysbok and sometimes Elephant can be seen while fishing with a professional and experienced Fly Castaway fly fishing guides.

  • Desroches Island

    Desroches Island

Desroches Island Fly Fishing Adventures is a new fly fishing operation in the Seychelles. An experienced fishing outfitter has joined with the Desroches Island Resort, an existing luxury resort, to offer a new standard of luxury fishing adventures.

The fishing program is limited to 6 anglers per week during the 6-month season, October – May. Desroches is a near perfect destination for non-fishing companions. However, it’s also an excellent alternative to the more remote or rustic operations in the Seychelles for anglers interested in great fishing paired with the best in accommodations and amenities.

Desroches Island is located 143 miles southwest of Mahe, a 40-minute flight. The Desroches Island Resort and its collection of Villas sits on the beautiful North-West facing beaches of the island and offers guests a private luxury experience. Anglers will be accommodated in a 4 bedroom, fully equipped Villa featuring its own private swimming pool, central living room / gathering area, and a modern, fully equipped kitchen, where meals are prepared by private chef. Villas also offer a mini-bar, plasma television, dvd players, an internet connection, laundry service, personal butler, and a golf cart for exploring the island. Each of the Villa’s 4 bedrooms is air-conditioned with a private bath, deck and an outdoor shower. From here, anglers will have access to the excellent and remote fly fishing flats of St Joseph’s and Poivre Atolls.

Poivre Atoll and St. Joseph’s Atoll offer large numbers of bonefish and an incredible array of species; the fishing that made the fishing in the Seychelles famous. Both atoll’s have miles of excellent flats for bonefish, Indo-Pacific permit, trevally, milkfish, and trigger fish, as well as reef and bluewater fishing for laundry list that includes, tunas, Dorado, Baracuda, wahoo, sailfish, marlin, jacks, grouper, snapper, to mention a few. Each fishing package consists of 6 fishing days split into 3 days fishing Poivre Atoll and 3 days fishing St. Joseph’s Atoll. Both fisheries are less than an hour ride on a modern, comfortable fast ferry. Guides and skiffs await the anglers’ arrival on the atolls.

Poivre Atoll is the smaller of the two and is comprised of 2 landmasses: Poivre and the South Island. These two islands are connected by an extensive flats system that offer a mix of coral, turtle grass and hard sand bottomed flats, however the coral is the predominant bottom. Poivre is an excellent bonefishery, however this location has a reputation of producing superior fishing for the exotic fish species of the Seychelles. Most notably Indo-Pacific Permit, Triggerfish, GT’s, Bluefin Trevally, and Milkfish.

St. Joseph’s Atoll is the larger atoll measuring 4.35 miles x 2.49 miles. The Atoll is comprised of a string of small islands, which are connected by the vast sand bar and turtle grass patches surrounding a lagoon. The flats on St Joseph’s are incredibly picturesque and have proven to be very productive, especially for large numbers of bonefish. Experienced anglers can rack up big numbers of bones orset out after the atolls population of Indo-Pacific Permit. Blue water and reef fishing can be an excellent option, but the main attraction at St Joseph’s is the bonefishing. It’s important to note that no skiffs were previously allowed on St. Joseph’s, however this restriction was lifted in November 2010. The use of flats skiffs on this fishery greatly expands it’s potential and unlocks a huge area that was previous inaccessible by foot.

  • FlyCastaway visits Angler Adventures

Gerhard Laubscher of FlyCastaway is visiting Angler Adventures in Connecticut next week and giving a couple of presentations about FlyCastaway’s cutting edge fishing operations on St. Brandon’s Atoll, Mauritius and Farquhar Atoll, Seychelles.  Both destinations offer spectacular fisheries that get almost no fishing pressure due to their remote locations and are priced like rare commodities, adding exclusivity to both destinations attributes (Farquhar prices at $7,500 US and St. Brandon’s prices at 6,500 Euro).

To get started, here’s the guides report from the April 4 – 11, 2012 week at Farquhar that included one of our clients, Steve Gross, who was looking to tally up as many species as possible.

If you’d like to attend Gerhard’s presentations, click here.

    Farquhar Atoll: 4-11 April 2012

Beautiful TrevallyLike a tide eager to begin its initial surge, our new group of guests arrived on the shores of Farquhar champing at the bit to explore the multitude of flats and species Farquhar has on offer. After our customary quick briefing and some hasty rigging of tackle, the group which consisted of 9 men and one hard core fisherwoman set out to get a brief taste of what was in store for the rest of the week. The weather was set to be stable …we were hoping for an absolute cracker!

GT's are abundant on FarquharYves quickly enticed his first Trigger to eat the fly. Jeff joining the action as he got stuck into a Milky as they are still here and feeding hard! Clare quickly showed the boys she was here to do business by landing the first GT, sadly her Dad. Finally after countless attempts, Wayne O finally managed to land his Trigger, which has been eluding him for years. And it didn’t end there for Wayne as he recorded our first Farquhar Slam, that being GT, a Bone and a Trigger in one day. Now that’s some serious angling and bragging rights!

There are Milkies too!But back to the rest of the week, the Milkies were still hanging around and after and epic battle, Alex landed his first Milky, awesome fish Alex! His action didn’t stop there either, he also managed to land a GT and a Bone in the same day, quite an achievement. Good fishing was being experienced by all, although we did have a fair number of large GTs lost due to hooks pulling and lines breaking. Clare however had the pink touch (literally), and landed another good GT. Things were heating up and the pressure was on to get the desired species.

A small GT is still a Giant Trevally!!!Ian subsequently also made his way in to the record book by landing all three of the species and Yves just failing to qualify by losing his GT. Wayne, Dean and Jeff had one truly memorable day whereby they landed 5 GTs, although Wayne did get smoked by a Yellowfin Tuna which tore off 300m of backing in less than 20 seconds late in afternoon!

Triggerfish offer a flats fishing challange on Farquhar2 Slams in two days. Let’s make it 4 in three days. Dean and Jeff decided they also wanted a taste of that action and had no trouble landing a Trigger, a Bone and a GT. Piece of cake, all in a day’s work at the office….these were the comments around the dining room table each evening. Steve continued his species count and landed a truly impressive Napoleon.

Don't under estimate these Sharks. They're fast, powerful, and fun on a fly, especially on a skinney flat.Last day out on the flats and Ian once again showed his metal landing a 98cm GT which was the largest of the week. Jeff and Wayne muscled in some Bumphead Parrotfish, whilst Steve braved “THE WALK” and reaped the rewards, landing Bones, Bluefin and two Blackfin Sharks. It was really good to have Steve out fishing with us after months of preparations and planning!

An amazing week of fishing with 4 Farquhar Slams, 15 GTs, 6 Triggers, 2 Napoleons, some Bumpheads, a Milkfish and countless Bluefin, Grouper and Snapper. That is what Farquhar is all about!

  • Seychelles Best Flats Fishing – Farquhar Atoll

The Seychelles became a bucket list destination because it’s a beautiful, remote destination with fantastic wading for bonefish on hard sand & coral flats and a variety of other species both on and off the flats that added depth to the fishery.  Recently, a new fishing operation has opened on Farquhar Atoll, which has taken those credentials to the next level.

Beautiful and remote? Farquhar is called the “Jewel of the Seychelles” and considered to be the most beautiful island in the archipelago and also the southern most atoll (2 hour flight from Mahe).  The staff and guests are the only people on the atoll, living in the islands only accommodations.  Check.

Fantastic Bonefishing? The fishing is 100% wading.  The average schooling bonefish is 4 – 6 pounds and there will be quite a few bonefish in the 6 – 8 pound range.  Most anglers end up leaving the schools to find fish in single and doubles for a bit more of a challenge.  Check.

Variety of Species?  In addition to Bonefish, there are the normal fish you’d expect to see on a flat in the Seychelles: Shark, Barracuda, Snapper, Triggerfish, Trevally (including Giant Trevally), Milkfish, Napoleon Wrasse and Indo-Pacific Permit.  The guides on Farquhar have also figured out how to catch Humphead Parrotfish, which were previously though to be uncatchable on the fly and become experts at targeting GT’s (Giant Trevally).  You can also fish deeper water for Sailfish, several Grouper species, Yellowfin Tuna, Wahoo, Job fish, and more.  A client of our landed 18 different species on the fly…all with a floating line!    Check.

This is truly one of the special fishing destinations in world, and the reservations book shows it – the first availability is for late-October 2013.  If you’re interested in fishing Farquhar, we suggest getting started now.  Like Farquhar, but more interested in Bonefishing?  Check out Farquhar’s sister operation St. Brandon’s Atoll, which has better bonefishing with less variety
