    Crocodile Bay Overview

Crocodile Bay still runs the fishing on the Golfo Dulce. The rooms are at Botánika Osa Peninsula, in Puerto Jiménez, with Corcovado National Park on one side and the Pacific on the other. Offshore is sailfish and marlin. Inshore is roosterfish, snapper, cubera, and the estuaries. A non-fishing partner has a real resort to stay in.

The fishing program is the same operation anglers have booked for years: a short run to blue water, inshore along the Osa coast, and days built around sailfish from January through March. What changed is the property around the dock. Guests sleep in studios and one-, two-, and three-bedroom suites, eat at Tierra a la Mesa and Driza Bar & Grill, and use a lagoon pool, a 2,600-square-foot gym, and a rainforest spa.

The marina next to the resort is growing into a seaside village: yacht club, ships chandlery, shops, and more slips for larger boats. The spa, the pool, the restaurants, and the beach club are operating now.

    Fishing at Crocodile Bay

Blue water is about half an hour from the marina. The published fleet is 24′ and 25′ Boston Whalers with twin 200 hp Suzuki outboards (up to four anglers), 33′ Strike towers with 430 hp Cummins diesels (up to six), and a 36′ Front Runner with triple 300 hp Mercury outboards (up to seven). Boats leave the pier around 6:30 a.m. and are back between 3:00 and 3:30 p.m.

A charter day includes the boat, captain, Costa Rica fishing license, tackle, bait, fuel, and a cooler with lunch, beer, water, and soft drinks. January, February, and March are prime sailfish. Sailfish numbers drop in mid-April as marlin show up. May and June slow for billfish and often bring spinner dolphins with yellowfin. July and August are marlin and tuna, including a shot at black marlin. October is when dorado show in numbers, with marlin behind them. December can hold marlin, dorado, tuna, and sailfish in the same week.

Inshore, the volcanic coastline and the Golfo Dulce estuaries fish all year in 80–83°F water. Roosterfish, snapper, and cubera are the fish most people add a day for.

Botánika, the Resort at Crocodile Bay

Botánika Osa Peninsula sits beside the Golfo Dulce and the Crocodile Bay marina. Rooms run from studios to one-, two-, and three-bedroom suites and garden villas, with air conditioning and terraces on the rainforest or the lagoon pool. A one-bedroom suite is about 944–956 square feet with a kitchen and a sofa bed. A two-bedroom is about 1,405 square feet.

Tierra a la Mesa serves breakfast from 5:30 to 10:00 a.m. and dinner from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. Driza Bar & Grill is open 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. by the pool. In-room dining runs 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. The spa uses rainforest treatments: hot stone, coffee scrub, chocolate wrap. The gym is 2,600 square feet. The beach is a boat ride to Cahui Beach Club at Preciosa Beach. The daily resort charge covers Wi-Fi, that beach boat, the Puerto Jiménez airport shuttle, and small fishing and spa credits.

    The Osa Around Crocodile Bay

Puerto Jiménez sits on the Golfo Dulce, with Corcovado National Park inland. Scarlet macaws and toucans are routine. Howler monkeys, sloths, and the occasional tapir are in the forest. Dolphin pods use the gulf, and humpback whales from both hemispheres come through with calves.

Days off the boat are Corcovado hikes, a zipline, a sloth or chocolate-farm visit, kayaks in the mangroves, horseback, and the beach club. The full list sits further down the page.

The marina beside Crocodile Bay is still being built out: a yacht club, a market, a chandlery, and more slips. The spa, the pool, the restaurants, and the beach club are open. A pharmacy and a shopping street are part of the village under construction. Call us before you count on those as finished.

Randy Wilson founded Tamarindo Sportfishing and still manages it. Arturo Rosales captains the 38′ Topaz Talking Fish and Javier Ruiz captains the 27′ Dusky Outcast. The boats fish marlin, sailfish, yellowfin, mahi-mahi and roosterfish off Tamarindo. Guanacaste’s better sailfish months are May through August, after the Papagayo winds ease.

Randy Wilson began fishing these waters in 1974 and holds the Costa Rica all-tackle record for black marlin, a 956-pound fish hooked on Tamarindo Reef. He manages the operation. Captains Arturo Rosales and Javier Ruiz run the boats.

He specializes in fishing artificials and enjoys teaching anglers his manual drop back technique. This is a very visual and fun method to hook billfish and most anglers become converts once they’ve seen how effective it is!

Talking Fish mates wire a big blue marlin caught by Angler Adventures’ client, Bob Auster.

Tamarindo fishes the northwest Pacific for marlin, sailfish, tuna, dorado and roosterfish. An April 97 Salt Water Sportsman article. “20 Top Spots for Blue Marlin” included Tamarindo twice, identifying January – March, Punta Guiones to Tamarindo, and August – November, Tamarindo to Gulf of Papagayo, as among the world’s best venues for blue marlin. You can add black marlin, striped marlin, yellowfin tuna to 300 + lbs., dorado, wahoo, roosterfish, Pacific Dog snapper, and one of the world’s best sailfisheries to the mix.

Traditionally, April through September are excellent for sails, marlin, tuna and dolphin. The seas are calm, and afternoon showers are common. October through December sees the transition between rainy season and dry season here, and we catch a variety of species. December through March can be windy, and boats usually run about 45 minutes to the south to get to the good fishing out of the wind. Marlin, and large yellowfin tuna are plentiful then, as well as sailfish.

Golfito Sailfish Rancho“Grab Bag at Golfito” was a glowing account of  Barry’s March 19 – 23, 1989 trip to Golfito Sailfish Rancho recounting not only the wonderful fishing for sails, blue and black marlin, but peppered with  photos of 200 pound yellowfin tuna, 50 + pound roosterfish and huge cubera snapper, the story emphasized the amazing diversity of this fishery. For the first 4 years, Golfito Sailfish Rancho  was one of the most popular and successful sport fishing operations in Costa Rica.Unfortunately, the Rancho became the victim of a divorce settlement and by 1993, operations and equipment were quickly deteriorating.
The property was subsequently sold and resold – opened and closed several times.  It seemed as if no one possessed the resources or inclination to put the Rancho back on her feet, until recently.
In 1998 GSR was purchased by American Betsy Bullard an ardent and well-traveled offshore angler.   Betsy has exhibited a firm commitment to making GSR better than ever. The first step was to scrap the war-worn 23-foot Makos and start from scratch with a fleet of 10 brand new 27-foot Ocean Masters powered by 300 hp Yanmar diesels, with a cruising speed of 32 mph. All the boats are fully equipped with VHF radios, GPS, fish finder, live bait well, tuna tubes, outriggers, head and top of the line Penn International and Shimano tackle. While sails were the main attraction, the area also supports good numbers of  blue and black marlin and the occasional striped marlin.  The inshore fishing in these waters is some of the best in Costa Rica, particularly for roosterfish (largest caught 85 lbs.) and giant cubera (Pacific dog) snapper.  Other species available include: dorado; yellowfin tuna; big eye tuna; wahoo; rainbow runner; grouper; bluefin trevally; amberjack; jack crevalle; black snook and more!  It’s not unusual for guests to boat 10, 12 or more different species during their trip. Another beautiful Golfito Sail!
Golfito Sailfish Rancho can accommodate 20 guests in 10 double rooms each of which is located on the beach just steps away from the Golfo Dulce.  The rooms are large with plenty of closet and storage  space, ceiling fans, and a porch overlooking the pier and beach. Each room has its own tiled bathroom with an oversized, walk-in lighted shower.

~ GOLFITO SAILFISH RANCHO, COSTA RICA ~
A cascading waterfall directly behind the lodge powers a waterwheel which augments the electrical supply at Golfito Sailfish Rancho.  The heart of the lodge is the spectacular main dining room where the bountiful meals are served. Constructed of cristobal and other rare native Costa Rican woods, the open dining area with its unrestricted views of the beautiful cove and surrounding jungle habitat is a showplace among fishing lodges.

Golfito Sailfish Rancho offers fishing packages from 3 days to as many as you’d like (see rate sheet, below). The 2006-2007 rate for a typical 5 fishing day package costs $3,695 per person based on 2 anglers sharing a double room and boat.
    The rates include:

Airport reception and transfers in San Jose; first night’s accommodations in San Jose plus nightly accommodations at Golfito Sailfish Rancho; round trip flights between San Jose and Golfito; full days guided fishing from 27 foot sportfisherman;  use of rods and reels; bait;  billfish trolling lures and terminal tackle; fishing license; all meals in Golfito; open bar at the lodge including beer, liquor and soft drinks.

Not included are: meals in San Jose; gratuities; casting and trolling lures (other than billfish lures) and international air fare.

Angler Adventures can make all your travel arrangements. We will also provide you with complete trip preparation material including: recommended tackle and lures; general information on your destination country; a what to bring list to assist you in packing; and a complete and detailed personal itinerary so you’ll encounter no surprises along the way.  If you would like to make a reservation at Golfito Sailfish Rancho or have any questions, please call.

  • JP Sportfishing

The fertile waters off of Quepos, on Costa Rica’s south central Pacific coast, hold the greatest concentrations of sailfish during the winter dry season, (which Ticos refer to as their “summer”), which is from December – April. During this time of year, it’s not unusual to raise 10 – 20 + sailfish daily. Dorado, yellowfin and bigeye tuna, roosterfish and an assortment of other in and offshore species are plentiful. Marlin (blue, black & striped), while not abundant in this area, are also an everyday possibility.

The Quepos winter season was first exploited by Sportfishing Costa Rica in the 1988/89 season. The initial “fleet” that first season, was a pair of 22 foot Boston Whalers. As word spread about this fabulous winter fishery, the Quepos fleet steadily grew. As December – April was off-season for sails in the northern Costa Rica areas such as Flamingo, captains in that area began moving their boats down to Quepos for the winter season there.

In recent years, there have been as many as 45 – 50 boats ranging from 25 – 36 foot, fishing out of Quepos, from December – April.

The oldest sportfishing operations in Quepos is JP Sportfishing Tours (JPT). Owned and operated by Jeannette Perez and her sons, JPT is a cooperative of some of the top boats working in Quepos. All JPT boats are equipped with outriggers, live well, fighting chair, tower, full electronics and top of the line Penn Int’l and Shimano tackle. All these captains have years of experience fishing Costa Rican waters with both fly and conventional methods. Click here to see the full fleet.

While JP Sportfishing Tours was founded in 1993, Jeannette Perez worked as operations manager for Sportfishing Costa Rica from 1988 until forming JPT in May of 1993. She brings over 20 years experience hosting international anglers.

In mid-May, JPT moves a portion of their operation north to Flamingo and offer packages in both areas. Also, custom trips to Drake Bay/Cano Island are available out of Quepos.

JPT offers standard packages on top quality boats at very competitive prices, or can customize packages to suit most clients’ needs.

  • 57 Sailfish on a Fly in One Day in Guatemala

57 Sailfish on a Fly in One Day in Guatemala

One of most exciting moments in flyrodding is watching an 8-foot long sailfish, lit up with neon and iridescent blues and greens, charge into the spread thrashing his bill trying to destroy your teaser bait! Your heart pounds as you await the call for “neutral” so you can pitch a 9-inch hot pink fly at this psychedelic beast. And when he pounces on your fly and tears off at 65 miles per hour, you’ll know beyond any doubt you’re attached to one of the world’s greatest gamefish.

While there are a number of destinations where you can fulfill this fantasy, Guatemala is the undisputed Sailfish Capital of the World. In the past 25 years, as sportfishing evolved in this country, Guatemala has turned the sportfishing world upside down, shattering records with astounding numbers like Capt Ron Hamlin’s 126 sailfish releases in a single day, or Capt Chris Sheeder’s 57 sailfish on fly in a single day!

And today, anglers can enjoy this incredible fishery, from the comfort of world class Gameboats with world class captains and top shelf accommodations at the beautiful Casa Vieja Lodge. Casa Vieja is comparable to any of the world’s finest fishing lodges with spacious and luxurious accommodations and amenities, 5-star cuisine and a pampering staff.

Casa Vieja’s fleet is comprised of 6 fully rigged, state of the art sportfishermen ranging from 37 to 40 feet, skippered by some of the world’s most respected blue water captains. And new this season are 2 superfast 35 foot Contender center consoles offering smaller groups a more economical alternative to experience this incredible fishery. All the Casa Vieja boats are equipped with top of the line conventional and fly tackle. Just bring yourself!

Besides incredible numbers of sails, Guatemala provides opportunities for marlin, dorado, tuna, roosterfish and more. Click or Tap here for more information on Casa Vieja Lodge.

    Costa Rica

Costa Rica is a great alternative, particularly for families interested in both fishing and non-fishing experiences. Prior to the discovery of the Guatemala sailfishery, Costa Rica was considered the premier Pacific sailfishery, and also offers a broader diversity of species.

Crocodile Bay Lodge on Golfo Dulce is a great choice both for hard core anglers and families looking for a vacation, as well as a fishing trip. Situated minutes from the entrance to Corcovado National Park, Crocodile Bay offer a wide range of non-fishing activities ranging from ecotours to zip lines to sailing, surfing, paddleboarding, or just relaxing by the Olympic size pool or being pampered by a treatment at the lodge’s 4,000 sq. foot Spa! Further north lies the beach resort town of Quepos, also a great fishing destination set in a charming village flanked by world class resort hotels and some of Costa Rica’s most spectacular beaches in nearby Manuel Antonio National Park. We’ve worked with JP Sportfishing of Quepos for over 25 years. They have a great fleet of 32 foot class day boats with experienced crews, and feature relatively short runs to blue water and the abundant sailfish found there from December through April.
