The Traful is a clear, technical river where anglers target individual fish in structured current, pockets, and runs. Much of the program is wade fishing, and many anglers value this fishery for quality over volume.
Species and Tactics
Primary targets are large brown and rainbow trout plus landlocked Atlantic salmon. Big dries, mouse patterns, attractors, and streamers all produce depending on conditions, and clear water favors careful presentation.

Brown and rainbow trout on one of Patagonia’s strongest tailwaters. 30+ miles float and 12 miles wade. Season Nov-Apr.
Updated on
Limay River Ranch sits on 80,000 acres in the high desert of Argentine Patagonia, with immediate access to the clear, productive Limay tailwater. Owners Ron Sorensen and Diego Gaiser developed this fishery over many years and opened the lodge in 2022 after decades of outfitting experience. The river is right out the front door, so logistics do not limit fishing time.
The Limay offers prolific hatches, strong rainbow numbers, and large migratory browns from El Chocón Reservoir. Anglers can fish multiple techniques in a single day: dries, dry-droppers, streamers, and sight fishing along rocky banks. The ranch controls over 30 miles for floating and 12 linear miles for wading side channels.
The lodge has six contemporary cabins around a central main lodge, strong food and hospitality, and practical angler-first logistics. Starlink WiFi, high renewable-energy coverage, and consistently renewed drift boats make this an excellent base for serious trout anglers.

The ranch controls over 30 miles of float water and 12 miles of wade water, allowing broad daily options and minimal pressure.
Migratory Brown Trout
Migratory browns from El Chocón enter the river from mid-December and spread through January. These fish commonly run from the low 20s to well over 30 inches. Late summer and fall can be especially strong for anglers targeting larger fish.

Le Fario Lodge sits in the heart of Los Alerces National Park, within easy reach of the region’s best trout waters. The program focuses on spring creeks, small lakes, and rivers up to the larger waters at hand. Whether you prefer to walk, wade, or float on lakes or rivers, the guides tailor each day to your style. Rivers include the Rio Rivadavia, Rio Arrayanes, and both stretches of the Rio Futaleufu; lakes include Lago Verde, Lago Krugger, and Laguna Larga—right beside the lodge. Each location is chosen for its seasonal peak, from dry-fly action to deep runs full of eager trout.
Le Fario Program (Los Alerces)
The standard Le Fario program runs seven nights with six and a half days of fishing. You’ll fish a different water each day—Rio Arrayanes, Lago Verde, Rio Futaleufu (first and second stretches), Rio Frey and Lago Krugger, Rio Rivadavia—and wrap the final morning on Laguna Larga before driving back to Esquel. All logistics, meals, and transport are handled by the lodge. The program runs November 1 through May 1.
Le Fario & Brookiland (Río Pico / Brook Trout)
For anglers who want trophy brook trout, the Le Fario & Brookiland program combines two areas: Le Fario in the Esquel / Los Alerces region and Brookiland in the Río Pico area, about three hours apart. Brookiland is a boutique retreat accommodating four guests, with access to El Engaño, Falso Engaño, Rio Corcovado, and Lago Vinter—waters that hold some of Patagonia’s healthiest brook trout populations. Trophy brook and rainbow trout average 20–25 inches, with larger fish possible. This program is ideal for a Patagonia Trophy Grand Slam (brown, rainbow, brook). The seven-night itinerary splits time between both lodges.
Our Guides
Argentina Waters guides are authorized by Chubut province and National Parks and know these waters intimately. One guide accompanies every two anglers. Each guide is equipped with professional tackle, rafts, oars, and everything needed for the day. Fishing typically starts around 8 AM and ends around 8 PM, depending on season and daylight.
Season Overview
November 1 – May 1: Main season. Early season (November, early December) can offer strong dry-fly action as waters clear. Mid-season brings consistent hatches and eager trout. Late season often sees larger fish and more technical fishing as waters cool.
Accommodations at Le Fario Lodge

Situated on Costa Rica’s beautiful southern Pacific coast in Puntarenas Province near the mouth of Golfo Dulce, the newly refurbished Golfito Sailfish Rancho (GSR) is Central America’s hottest new fishing destination.
Golfito Sailfish Rancho first opened in January 1989 and first received international attention in Salt Water Sportsman editor Barry Gibson’s feature article in the July 1989 issue.
Book now, get a quote, or chat with us about Costa Rica fishing!
“Grab Bag at Golfito” was a glowing account of Barry’s March 19 – 23, 1989 trip to Golfito Sailfish Rancho recounting not only the wonderful fishing for sails, blue and black marlin, but peppered with photos of 200 pound yellowfin tuna, 50 + pound roosterfish and huge cubera snapper, the story emphasized the amazing diversity of this fishery. For the first 4 years, Golfito Sailfish Rancho was one of the most popular and successful sport fishing operations in Costa Rica.Unfortunately, the Rancho became the victim of a divorce settlement and by 1993, operations and equipment were quickly deteriorating.
The property was subsequently sold and resold – opened and closed several times. It seemed as if no one possessed the resources or inclination to put the Rancho back on her feet, until recently.
In 1998 GSR was purchased by American Betsy Bullard an ardent and well-traveled offshore angler. Betsy has exhibited a firm commitment to making GSR better than ever. The first step was to scrap the war-worn 23-foot Makos and start from scratch with a fleet of 10 brand new 27-foot Ocean Masters powered by 300 hp Yanmar diesels, with a cruising speed of 32 mph. All the boats are fully equipped with VHF radios, GPS, fish finder, live bait well, tuna tubes, outriggers, head and top of the line Penn International and Shimano tackle. While sails were the main attraction, the area also supports good numbers of blue and black marlin and the occasional striped marlin. The inshore fishing in these waters is some of the best in Costa Rica, particularly for roosterfish (largest caught 85 lbs.) and giant cubera (Pacific dog) snapper. Other species available include: dorado; yellowfin tuna; big eye tuna; wahoo; rainbow runner; grouper; bluefin trevally; amberjack; jack crevalle; black snook and more! It’s not unusual for guests to boat 10, 12 or more different species during their trip.
Golfito Sailfish Rancho can accommodate 20 guests in 10 double rooms each of which is located on the beach just steps away from the Golfo Dulce. The rooms are large with plenty of closet and storage space, ceiling fans, and a porch overlooking the pier and beach. Each room has its own tiled bathroom with an oversized, walk-in lighted shower.
~ GOLFITO SAILFISH RANCHO, COSTA RICA ~
A cascading waterfall directly behind the lodge powers a waterwheel which augments the electrical supply at Golfito Sailfish Rancho. The heart of the lodge is the spectacular main dining room where the bountiful meals are served. Constructed of cristobal and other rare native Costa Rican woods, the open dining area with its unrestricted views of the beautiful cove and surrounding jungle habitat is a showplace among fishing lodges.
Golfito Sailfish Rancho offers fishing packages from 3 days to as many as you’d like (see rate sheet, below). The 2006-2007 rate for a typical 5 fishing day package costs $3,695 per person based on 2 anglers sharing a double room and boat.
The rates include:
Airport reception and transfers in San Jose; first night’s accommodations in San Jose plus nightly accommodations at Golfito Sailfish Rancho; round trip flights between San Jose and Golfito; full days guided fishing from 27 foot sportfisherman; use of rods and reels; bait; billfish trolling lures and terminal tackle; fishing license; all meals in Golfito; open bar at the lodge including beer, liquor and soft drinks.

Legend has it that outdoor adventure writer Zane Grey “discovered” the great black marlin fishing off the reef (now known as the Zane Grey Reef) on Piñas Bay. Historians disagree, but most everyone agrees that Piñas Bay is one of the world’s finest black marlin fisheries. The blacks of Piñas usually range from 300 – 600 pounds and the best time of year is from mid-January through mid-March. Blues and striped marlin start running in March and from April through early June Piñas has fantastic sailfishing. Tropic Star Lodge is a world class lodge overlooking Piñas Bay and offers the best access to this fishery aboard their fleet of 31-foot Bertrams. Besides billfish, Piñas offers wahoo, dorado, tuna, and wonderful “rock” fishing for roosters, snappers and other inshore species.
Casa Vieja is located on Guatemala’s Pacific coast, the unchallenged Sailfish Capital of the World. Casa Vieja’s captains have guided anglers to such astounding records as:
124 sails released from one boat in one day
300 billfish released in 3 consecutive days, one boat
57 sailfish landed on flyrod, in one day
An annual release rate of over a dozen sails per boat per day
It’s clear that Guatemala has the greatest concentration of billfish to be found anywhere on this planet.
Casa Vieja Lodge was built over twenty years ago as the private retreat to one of Guatemala’s most prominent sporting families. Today, Casa Vieja Lodge is a classically styled sportsman’s retreat sure to delight guests who’ve fished the world over. Also, the lodge is surrounded by landscaped gardens and tropical foliage providing the ultimate in privacy.
Casa Vieja Lodge offers a waterfront view, full service bar, pool, and lovely, landscaped grounds. Rooms are air conditioned and have satellite televisions and sliding doors leading to the pool and patio.
At Casa Vieja, Sailfish are abundant year round and the fleet has averaged raising more than 20 billfish per day per boat – YEAR ROUND! Casa Vieja’s records show 40 plus sailfish release days have been experienced in every month of the year. Days with finicky or non-aggressive feeders are few and far between!
The larger sailfish up to 150 pounds are usually taken during the Fall, but for pure volume of 80 – 100 pound fish, December through June tends to be the rule. During this time you’ll be tantalized with 20 – 40 bites per day and, on some of those exceptional days, more than 100!
If you like to play the numbers, while targeting sailfish, Casa Vieja boats usually encounter a marlin about every third day during the year, however more can be seen by requesting a strictly marlin venture! Casa Vieja has lots of football size tuna and dolphin in the 20 – 40 pound range and impressive sized roosterfish are plentiful along the coastline within minutes of the docks. A day of inshore fishing can be an excellent way to round off your trip.
Casa Vieja boasts one of the most impressive fleets of gameboats skippered by a roster of some of the world’s most accomplished bluewater captains. Under the direction of Fleet Captain and television personality, Tred Barta, Casa Vieja’s skipper list reads like a “who’s who” of names well known to international billfishermen.

Pacific Fins Guatemala Resort and Marina is a luxury fishing resort featuring a fleet with some of the newest, fastest and most luxurious sportfishing yachts in Guatemala providing access to what is without question, the Sailfishing Capital of the World. In addition to meticulously maintained sportfishing boats and top of the line Shimano tackle, guests fish with an experienced Captain and two seasoned mates, from some of the best offshore fishing crews in the world.
The Pacific coast of Guatemala features some of the world’s most consistently calm billfishing waters. Pacific Fins typically focuses the fishing program around a deep 15 miles wide underwater canyon, called the “Pocket”. Fishing days can start a mere 15 to 20 miles offshore or as far as 50 miles, depending on the fishing and the conditions.
The crew on each Pacific Fins’ charter boat prepares a hot lunch for the anglers on board and serves snacks of fresh pineapple and mellon. Several of the crews make fresh Ceviche or Sashimi right in the galley.
Sailfish, Marlin, Dorado (Dolphin), and Yellowfin Tuna are the most common species in the Guatemala. On average, angler’s can experience 15 to 20 sailfish bites a day with 40 or more bites possible during the peak season (November through May). These Pacific Sailfish average 80 to 90 pounds, but fish over 125 pounds are common. Marlin can be caught year round in Guatemala but the largest concentrations seem to occur in late September through December. Pacific Fins has reported good Marlin fishing recently, with blue, striped and black marlin being caught, but 300 – 600 pound blues are the most common.
The Pacific Fins’ fleet and experience captains includes, Captain Nester Garcia on the 2003 36-foot, Jersey Cape Custom Fishy Business; Captain Carlos Diaz on the 2008 35-foot, Cabo Hooked Up; Captain Tyson on the 1998 51-foot, Ricker La Penultima; Captain Marcial Fajardo Ruiz on the 1998 36-foot, Bertram Perla del Mar; and Captain “Kiwi” Chris van Leeuween on the 2001 39-foot, Bertram Allure. Pacific Fins also works with a number of smaller, local boats including the 32 Blackfins Gypsy & Maverick, and the venerable 31 Bertrams, Piragua, Tranquility & Drop It, providing more economical options for anglers.
Pacific Fins Resort is newly renovated and features four air-conditioned villas each offering two bedrooms and two bathrooms and a central living room. The living rooms feature queen sofa beds, flat screen satellite televisions and kitchenettes.
Sliding glass doors open on to a sun deck overlooking Pacific Fins’ landscaped, ocean-front grounds and the pool and dock areas. Along with the villas, Pacific Fins has individual private rooms available as well. Other amenities include a wireless Internet connection, free phone calls to the US or Canada, and gourmet meals. For after fishing relaxation, there is a full bar, a pool and a spa.

A pioneer of sportfishing in Costa Rica, Randy Wilson choseTamarindo Beach as his home base because of its ideal location. Situated on the western tip of the northwest Pacific coast, Tamarindo offers the shortest running time to blue water beyond the Continental Shelf, and offers a large variety of species 12 months of the year.
Randy, who began fishing these waters in 1974, is widely acknowledged as one of Costa Rica’s top captains. Randy has guided both conventional and flyfishermen to numerous IGFA World Records. Among his numerous accomplishments, he holds the Costa Rica all tackle record for black marlin with a 956 pound specimen hooked on Tamarindo Reef, 10 minutes from the beach.
He specializes in fishing artificials and enjoys teaching anglers his manual drop back technique. This is a very visual and fun method to hook billfish and most anglers become converts once they’ve seen how effective it is!
Talking Fish mates wire a big blue marlin caught by Angler Adventures’ client, Bob Auster.
Tamarindo is one of Costa Ricas most fertile fishing areas and is definitely the best area for marlin. An April 97 Salt Water Sportsman article. “20 Top Spots for Blue Marlin” included Tamarindo twice, identifying January – March, Punta Guiones to Tamarindo, and August – November, Tamarindo to Gulf of Papagayo, as among the world’s best venues for blue marlin. You can add black marlin, striped marlin, yellowfin tuna to 300 + lbs., dorado, wahoo, roosterfish, Pacific Dog snapper, and one of the world’s best sailfisheries to the mix.
Traditionally, April through September are excellent for sails, marlin, tuna and dolphin. The seas are calm, and afternoon showers are common. October through December sees the transition between rainy season and dry season here, and we catch a variety of species. December through March can be windy, and boats usually run about 45 minutes to the south to get to the good fishing out of the wind. Marlin, and large yellowfin tuna are plentiful then, as well as sailfish.

Tamarindo provides year-round sportfishing opportunities. Sailfish are caught 12 months of the year, but generally peak anytime from April through November. Likewise, blue, black and striped marlin can be taken any season, but marlin fishing is at it’s best from November through March. Add to the mix, yellowfin and bigeye tuna to 200 + pounds, dorado, wahoo and other offshore species, roosters, dogtooth snappers and other inshore and reef species, and you have one of the most diverse and bountiful salt water fisheries to be found anywhere in the world.
Rainbow Runner
Also very popular is the unsinkable 22′ Boston Whaler. This boat will handle up to three anglers, but is ideal for individuals or couples. Rigged for serious fishing also, the Whaler has been a favorite in these waters for years and is great for anglers on a budget.
Capullo Sportfishing Captains sponsor conservation ethics in sportfishing in Costa Rica. Catch-and-release is practiced on all billfish. With food species, the practice is catch what you can eat and release the rest.

The fertile waters off of Quepos, on Costa Rica’s south central Pacific coast, hold the greatest concentrations of sailfish during the winter dry season, (which Ticos refer to as their “summer”), which is from December – April. During this time of year, it’s not unusual to raise 10 – 20 + sailfish daily. Dorado, yellowfin and bigeye tuna, roosterfish and an assortment of other in and offshore species are plentiful. Marlin (blue, black & striped), while not abundant in this area, are also an everyday possibility.
The Quepos winter season was first exploited by Sportfishing Costa Rica in the 1988/89 season. The initial “fleet” that first season, was a pair of 22 foot Boston Whalers. As word spread about this fabulous winter fishery, the Quepos fleet steadily grew. As December – April was off-season for sails in the northern Costa Rica areas such as Flamingo, captains in that area began moving their boats down to Quepos for the winter season there.
In recent years, there have been as many as 45 – 50 boats ranging from 25 – 36 foot, fishing out of Quepos, from December – April.
The oldest sportfishing operations in Quepos is JP Sportfishing Tours (JPT). Owned and operated by Jeannette Perez and her sons, JPT is a cooperative of some of the top boats working in Quepos. All JPT boats are equipped with outriggers, live well, fighting chair, tower, full electronics and top of the line Penn Int’l and Shimano tackle. All these captains have years of experience fishing Costa Rican waters with both fly and conventional methods. Click here to see the full fleet.
While JP Sportfishing Tours was founded in 1993, Jeannette Perez worked as operations manager for Sportfishing Costa Rica from 1988 until forming JPT in May of 1993. She brings over 20 years experience hosting international anglers.
In mid-May, JPT moves a portion of their operation north to Flamingo and offer packages in both areas. Also, custom trips to Drake Bay/Cano Island are available out of Quepos.
JPT offers standard packages on top quality boats at very competitive prices, or can customize packages to suit most clients’ needs.

For over 25 years, Costa Rica has been a mecca for traveling saltwater anglers. While best known for sails, Costa Rica offers an incredible diversity of inshore and offshore species on her Pacific Coast including roosterfish, dorado, tunas, wahoo, sailfish, blue, black & striped marlin and a couple of dozen other hard fighting species. Not enough variety? Hop a 30-minute flight to the Caribbean Coast for some world-class tarpon and snook action and you’ll truly understand what makes this tiny country an Angler’s Paradise!
This incredibly beautiful and diverse country also offers lots for non-fishing family members; great hotels, world class beaches, and amazing ecotours. This incredibly friendly and beautiful country is the perfect choice for vacations, which include non-fishing family members.

North Pacific Coast
The Pacific north coast offers great sailfishing in the summer, amazing marlin fishing in the winter, and a broad variety of inshore and reef species available year round. Our favorite port on the north coast is Tamarindo, home to some of the country’s most seasoned American and Tico captains. Our “go to guy” for the past 24 years, is the legendary Capt. Randy Wilson of Tamarindo Sportfishing. Tamarindo features beautiful beachfront hotels, great restaurants, tons of non-fishing activities, and the shortest running time to blue water of any Costa Rican port.

One of most exciting moments in flyrodding is watching an 8-foot long sailfish, lit up with neon and iridescent blues and greens, charge into the spread thrashing his bill trying to destroy your teaser bait! Your heart pounds as you await the call for “neutral” so you can pitch a 9-inch hot pink fly at this psychedelic beast. And when he pounces on your fly and tears off at 65 miles per hour, you’ll know beyond any doubt you’re attached to one of the world’s greatest gamefish.
While there are a number of destinations where you can fulfill this fantasy, Guatemala is the undisputed Sailfish Capital of the World. In the past 25 years, as sportfishing evolved in this country, Guatemala has turned the sportfishing world upside down, shattering records with astounding numbers like Capt Ron Hamlin’s 126 sailfish releases in a single day, or Capt Chris Sheeder’s 57 sailfish on fly in a single day!
And today, anglers can enjoy this incredible fishery, from the comfort of world class Gameboats with world class captains and top shelf accommodations at the beautiful Casa Vieja Lodge. Casa Vieja is comparable to any of the world’s finest fishing lodges with spacious and luxurious accommodations and amenities, 5-star cuisine and a pampering staff.
Casa Vieja’s fleet is comprised of 6 fully rigged, state of the art sportfishermen ranging from 37 to 40 feet, skippered by some of the world’s most respected blue water captains. And new this season are 2 superfast 35 foot Contender center consoles offering smaller groups a more economical alternative to experience this incredible fishery. All the Casa Vieja boats are equipped with top of the line conventional and fly tackle. Just bring yourself!
Costa Rica is a great alternative, particularly for families interested in both fishing and non-fishing experiences. Prior to the discovery of the Guatemala sailfishery, Costa Rica was considered the premier Pacific sailfishery, and also offers a broader diversity of species.
