A pioneer of sportfishing in Costa Rica, Randy Wilson choseTamarindo Beach as his home base because of its ideal location. Situated on the western tip of the northwest Pacific coast, Tamarindo offers the shortest running time to blue water beyond the Continental Shelf, and offers a large variety of species 12 months of the year.

Randy, who began fishing these waters in 1974, is widely acknowledged as one of Costa Rica’s top captains. Randy has guided both conventional and flyfishermen to numerous IGFA World Records. Among his numerous accomplishments, he holds the Costa Rica all tackle record for black marlin with a 956 pound specimen hooked on Tamarindo Reef, 10 minutes from the beach.

He specializes in fishing artificials and enjoys teaching anglers his manual drop back technique. This is a very visual and fun method to hook billfish and most anglers become converts once they’ve seen how effective it is!

Tamarindo is one of Costa Ricas most fertile fishing areas and is definitely the best area for marlin. An April 97 Salt Water Sportsman article. “20 Top Spots for Blue Marlin” included Tamarindo twice, identifying January – March, Punta Guiones to Tamarindo, and August – November, Tamarindo to Gulf of Papagayo, as among the world’s best venues for blue marlin. You can add black marlin, striped marlin, yellowfin tuna to 300 + lbs., dorado, wahoo, roosterfish, Pacific Dog snapper, and one of the world’s best sailfisheries to the mix.

Traditionally, April through September are excellent for sails, marlin, tuna and dolphin. The seas are calm, and afternoon showers are common. October through December sees the transition between rainy season and dry season here, and we catch a variety of species. December through March can be windy, and boats usually run about 45 minutes to the south to get to the good fishing out of the wind. Marlin, and large yellowfin tuna are plentiful then, as well as sailfish.

Talking Fish

Captained by Randy Wilson, Talking Fish is a 38 foot Topaz Express powered by twin diesel Detroit 671 TI’s. Cruising Speed 23 knots. Pipewelders tower, Lee dual spreader outriggers, Pompanette fighting chair. Electronics include Magellan G.P.S., Radar, Depth Sounder, Auto Pilot, and two VHF Radios. Tackle includes Penn Int’l, Fin-Nor Tycoon, Shimano Triton & TLD reels spooled with 30, 50 & 80 lb. Ande Tournament line on matching stand-up & chair rods. Cabin has a V-berth and a private head with separate shower, full galley with stove, refrigerator & microwave. The spacious cockpit affords ample shade. OutCast

OutCast is a 27′ Dusky with fast twin 250 hp Cummins diesels, tower, fighting chair and outriggers and accommodates up to 4 persons. It has a spacious cockpit due to its 11.5′ beam and a large shaded seating area. The cabin has a head. The boat is outfitted with GPS, depthsounder, Penn International and Shimano tackle. Captain José Asdrubal López is bilingual and has been sport fishing these waters since 1987.

Salsa

Salsa is a 1999 27′ Escapade with a fast 220 hp Cummins diesel and a walk-around cuddy cabin with a V-berth and head and accommodates up to 4 persons. The cockpit has a comfortable 10′ beam and the extra large top provides generous shade. The boat is outfitted with a fighting chair, outriggers, depth sounder, GPS and radio. Penn International and Shimano tackle is provided. Capt. Maikel Rodriguez is fluent in English and has been sportfishing here since the early 90’s.

Tamarindo offers several hotels including the Hotel Tamarindo Diria, the Jardin del Eden, the Cala Luna, or our favorite the beautiful Capitan Suizo. The Diria and Capitan Suizo are located right on the beautiful Tamarindo Beach and the Jardin del Eden is set up on the hillside offering spectacular views of the Pacific. All offer nicely appointed rooms with private bath, and air conditioning as well as swimming pool, restaurant and lounges, and activities. Rates range from $110 – $350 per night.

Captain Steve Curtis, owner and skipper of Capullo has been fishing Angler Adventures clients for over 15 years, and is considered one of Costa Rica’s top skippers.

Tamarindo provides year-round sportfishing opportunities.   Sailfish are caught 12 months of the year, but generally peak anytime from April through November.  Likewise, blue, black and striped marlin can be taken any season, but marlin fishing is at it’s best from November through March.  Add to the mix, yellowfin and bigeye tuna to 200 + pounds, dorado, wahoo and other offshore species, roosters, dogtooth snappers and other inshore and reef species, and you have one of the most diverse and bountiful salt water fisheries to be found anywhere in the world.

Also very popular is the unsinkable 22′ Boston Whaler. This boat will handle up to three anglers, but is ideal for individuals or couples. Rigged for serious fishing also, the Whaler has been a favorite in these waters for years and is great for anglers on a budget.

Capullo Sportfishing 2017 – 2018 Rates

Full Day charters include all tackle, bait, ice, snacks, lunch and beverages.

Half Day charters include all tackle, bait, ice, snacks and beverages.

Crew tips are NOT included (10% minimum is customary).

The provided tackle is state-of-the-art: Penn International or Shimano, in 12-80 lb. test, all IGFA. Please bring your own ultra-light and fly fishing tackle.

The fertile waters off of Quepos, on Costa Rica’s south central Pacific coast, hold the greatest concentrations of sailfish during the winter dry season, (which Ticos refer to as their “summer”), which is from December – April. During this time of year, it’s not unusual to raise 10 – 20 + sailfish daily. Dorado, yellowfin and bigeye tuna, roosterfish and an assortment of other in and offshore species are plentiful. Marlin (blue, black & striped), while not abundant in this area, are also an everyday possibility.

The Quepos winter season was first exploited by Sportfishing Costa Rica in the 1988/89 season. The initial “fleet” that first season, was a pair of 22 foot Boston Whalers. As word spread about this fabulous winter fishery, the Quepos fleet steadily grew. As December – April was off-season for sails in the northern Costa Rica areas such as Flamingo, captains in that area began moving their boats down to Quepos for the winter season there.

In recent years, there have been as many as 45 – 50 boats ranging from 25 – 36 foot, fishing out of Quepos, from December – April.

The oldest sportfishing operations in Quepos is JP Sportfishing Tours (JPT). Owned and operated by Jeannette Perez and her sons, JPT is a cooperative of some of the top boats working in Quepos. All JPT boats are equipped with outriggers, live well, fighting chair, tower, full electronics and top of the line Penn Int’l and Shimano tackle. While JP Sportfishing Tours was founded in 1993, Jeannette Perez worked as operations manager for Sportfishing Costa Rica from 1988 until forming JPT in May of 1993. She brings over 20 years experience hosting international anglers.

In mid-May, JPT moves a portion of their operation north to Flamingo and offer packages in both areas. Also, custom trips to Drake Bay/Cano Island are available out of Quepos.

Hotel Capitán Suizo is located in Playa Tamarindo, one of the most beautiful Pacific coast beaches in Costa Rica. Directly on the beach, the hotel is surrounded by large, native trees and lush, colorful gardens. Playa Tamarindo is located 200 miles from San José, 45 miles from the International Airport in Liberia and 2 miles from the local airport in Tamarindo.

BUNGALOWS 

The 8 tiled roof bungalows are individually set into nature with a roomy and comfortable queen sized bed. One queen sized futon sofa bed. The bathrooms with bathtubs/showers, bidets and outside showers are very large. The bungalows have been designed to keep the inside cool, they are equipped with either fans or A/C. We’ve found that the fans provide sufficient circulation and cooling. 

ROOMS 

The 22 rooms are spacious with a terrace or balcony. The rooms on the first floor have A/C, on the second floor they are built in such a way that A/C is not needed. 18 rooms offer queen sized beds, 4 rooms have 2 twin beds. All of them have one queen sized futon sofa bed. The bathrooms are large with a shower and bidet.

Each unit is equipped with a telephone, FM/AM Radio, Safety box and a small refrigerator.

APARTMENT 

The apartment is situated on the second floor of the main building and overlooks lush, tropical grounds. There are four bedrooms; one bedroom has a king-size bed with a ceiling fan and a balcony; the second bedroom consists of one full-size bed and a/c; a third bedroom has two single beds, a/c and balcony; and the fourth bedroom has a queen size bed and a/c. The apartment has two bathrooms both with double sinks. One bathroom has a whirlpool, shower and bidet, while the other has a shower. The well-equipped kitchen opens to a spacious  living room with five ceiling fans and a huge balcony. The entire living space with balcony is approximately 275 square meters. Availability is limited, but this is a great option for small groups or families.

We also offer a very large, free-form pool, for warm, fresh water swimming in a tropical environment. Restaurant with an open air bar, Boutique, Laundry Service and Transportation to and from the local Tamarindo airport.

THE BOATS

Hop aboard our new 33 foot Strike or one of our new 24 foot Whaler Outrages (twin 150 hp outboards) for a scenic 30 minute run (half of the time necessary from other local lodges) to blue water for Sailfish, Blue, Black & Striped Marlin, Wahoo, Dorado (dolphinfish, mahi) and tuna. It is common to raise 10 to 15 Sailfish a day with over 50 on a spectacular day.

THE TACKLE

Tackle and bait on all of Crocodile Bay’s fishing adventures is always included, but feel free to bring your own gear if you’d like.They use top of the line Shimano offshore 2 speed reels, top of the line fly rods and reels, Calcutta conventional & Baitrunner spinning outfits for  inshore and surf fishing equipment. They also have their own line of offshore, inshore and surf  fishing lures, made on the premises. Combined with other popular brands they have the best equipped fishing available.

THE LODGE

The lodge structures are strategically located throughout the landscaped property with the main building housing the restaurant, bar and reception. The main lodge also has a  tackle and gift shop, where one can purchase inshore or offshore fishing lures (made on the premises) for souvenirs or for use at another time, as well as locally made gifts of all kinds. The pool and jacuzzi were designed utilizing our unique property characteristics including waterfalls and jungle environment. They are conveniently accessible to all guests. The lodge is staffed by friendly, English-speaking and well experienced personnel guaranteed to make your stay an exciting and unforgettable one.

After a day on the water, or returning from the thrilling adventure tour, enjoy your favorite cocktail or beverage at our open bar, take a relaxing swim, dine in our elegant air-conditioned restaurant or walk through our tropical gardens and feed our friendly crocodiles. Watch and listen for the sounds of local wildlife. At any given time you may see one of several species of monkeys or other mammals, crocodiles, lizards and other reptiles or perhaps a parrot or what is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful birds in the world, the scarlet macaw.

Packages & Prices: Packages at Crocodile Bay are totally customizable and we can personalize an itinerary to include as many or as few fishing days as you like. Please call or email and we will quote you a price based on your preferred package.

Crocodile Bay Lodge fishing packages include: Lodging and fishing as customized, use of fishing gear, guide, fishing license, and all meals including non-alcoholic beverages.

Not included: International airfare, first and last nights lodging at a hotel in San Jose, ground transfers between airport and hotels, roundtrip air transportation between San Jose and Crocodile Bay, alcoholic beverages, meals in San Jose, overweight seat and baggage, airport departure tax, change fees and gratuities. (See “Transfer Package” below)

Seasons: Whether you are fishing inshore in our flats boats, or along the volcanic shoreline in our inshore boats, it is excellent all year long. Fishing offshore in Outrage 240 center consoles or Strike 33’s is also available 12 months a year. In terms of pricing, low season all inclusive accommodation packages runs from April 16th – December 14th. High season rates apply December 15th – April 15th.
