The Salmon Lodge has been welcoming Atlantic salmon fishing enthusiasts to the world-famous Grand Cascapedia Valley for over a century. Perched high on an 80-foot bluff overlooking the majestic Grand Cascapedia River, The Salmon Lodge was built in the late 1800’s. This historic lodge has been painstakingly maintained and from the moment anglers arrive there’s a special feeling that they’ve been swept back in time to an era of Atlantic salmon fishing in the “Grand Old Style”.
Ideally located in the heart of Quebec’s famous Gaspé Peninsula, The Salmon Lodge is located on the doorstep of the finest and most renowned Atlantic salmon rivers in the province and affords angler the opportunity to fish not one, but three of Quebec’s finest salmon rivers. The Grand Cascapedia River is world renowned for producing the largest Atlantic salmon in the province, and indeed some of the largest salmon in the world. More Atlantic salmon over the magical 40-pound mark have come from the Grand than any other river in North America. The Petite Cascapedia is an absolute jewel providing miles of some of the most beautiful and productive salmon and brook trout water anywhere. Big salmon in the 30 to 40 pound class are a possibility here as well sea-run brookies that can sometimes exceed 10 pounds. And last but not least, the Bonaventure, regarded as the clearest of the clear, offers anglers an unique opportunity to sight cast to huge salmon on miles of pristine river.
The fishing at The Salmon Lodge is either done wading from in the Gaspé style, from traditional 26-foot river canoes. Early in the season the Atlantic salmon fishing is a combination of both while later in the season many pools are best fished wading. The Salmon Lodge has excellent late season Atlantic salmon fishing (August and September) since the mountain streams and spring-fed brooks supply The Grand Casacapedia, The Petite Cascapedia, and the Bonaventure with cold water throughout the entire summer, keeping each them cool and clear.
The Salmon Lodge can accommodate up to eight fishing guests and four non-fishing guests in complete comfort. Well-appointed and comfortable bedrooms, an inviting living room and spacious dining room, both with their original fireplaces, create a relaxing and cozy atmosphere. A highlight of staying at Salmon Lodge is the spectacular
view from our deck and cigar-friendly screened porch, where a century’s worth of fishing tales have been told.
The Salmon Lodge also has a rod room, located in a separate building, which is the ideal place to keep fishing equipment during a visit. The rod room is where guests meet their guide in the morning before a day of salmon fishing. The features of the rod room include individual storage areas for each guest, a large rod rack, and there’s always fresh coffee in the morning and cool drinks at the end of the day.
Each day the resident chef prepares a different menu to tempt guest’s pallets. Homemade breads and jams along with all morning favorites will have guests ready for a day of salmon fishing. Anglers are welcometo return to the lodge to enjoy a wonderful lunch or take their midday meal picnic style on the river. Evening meals at the lodge begin with hors d’oeuvres served in front of a blazing fire or on the deck overlooking the Grand Cascapedia. These mouth-watering meals are served in the dining room begin with fresh salads, soups and appetizers, main courses include fresh lobster, local seafood and sizzling steaks off the grill, just to mention a few. The Salmon Lodge is happy to accommodate any dietary restrictions or requirements. Wine is included with lunch and diner, personal alcohol is not included, however, guests are welcome to bring their own. At the bar area The Salmon Lodge supplies all ice, mixes and necessary ingredients for the perfect drink. The lodge is also a short distance from a very well stocked liquor store.
Guests are fully guided by a team of experienced and professional guides, committed to the sport of fly-fishing for Atlantic salmon. All are qualified instructors; they teach the fundamentals to beginners or work with seasoned anglers to perfect their abilities. Most importantly, perhaps, is the friendship you’ll develop with these great guys.
All The Salmon Lodge guides are equipped with digital cameras and will be taking photos each day on the river to document your trip. A short while after returning home you will receive a CD with all the photos of your trip.
The Club was incorporated and constructed in the late 20’s by a group of prominent Canadians and operated as a private camp, the Canadian Salmon Club until 2017. That year, the owners of the two iconic Gaspé salmon camps, Camp Bonaventure and the Salmon Lodge purchased the Club and invested a half a million dollars restoring this historic camp, updating and modernizing while preserving the charm and essence of a classic 100 year old salmon camp. The moniker, The Club was kept but for the first time in its history, the camp is now open to the public.

The Club is situated on 100 acres of riverfront property and retains freehold ownership of their original water, about 3.5 miles of river with 14 major pools. This sector is known as B3, and along with the adjacent B4 sector is considered the very best water on the entire river. And to provide guests access to more water, in 2019 the Club entered an agreement with the ZEC to rotate these two premier sectors. The Club’s 6-anglers now fish Sector B3 Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays and Sector B4 Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays giving guests exclusive access to over 7-miles and 26 major pools.
The Club accommodates a maximum of 6 anglers accommodated in single rooms. Each bedroom is elegantly appointed with a king size bed, fireplace, AC and ceiling fan, full private bath with walk in shower and a screened porch. A covered walkway connects the guest quarters with the Common areas which include: the screen porch overlooking the river; The Great Room with fireplace and overstuffed leather chairs and sofa; and the dining room with adjacent sitting area and fireplace which also overlooks the river.
Fishing the B3 & B4 Sectors at The Club on the Bonaventure
The Club is situated on Sector B3 (Google Earth coordinates 48°11’19.3″N 65°33’41.6″W) about 25 river miles up from the Baie de Chaleur, just below Gallagher (52) and overlooking Burnt Camp (51) and Kelly (50). All told, they have exclusive access to over 7 miles of river from Baker (68) at the top of B4 to Deep Water Ledge (42) at the bottom of B3. The Club rotates these sectors with the ZEC and fishes 3 canoes on B3 Monday, Wednesday & Friday and B4 Tuesday, Thursday & Saturday, giving guests exclusive access to 26 pools which include many of the best holding pools on the river.
Fishing days are divided into 2 sessions, mornings from approximately 7:30 am – 11:30 am and evening 4:00 pm until dusk to take advantage of the most productive hours. Guests rotate beats each fishing session so you’ll likely fish new water each and every fishing session. Weeks run Sunday to Sunday with no fishing on the Sunday turnover day.
The Bonaventure is renowned as one of the clearest salmon rivers in the world. As such, it is the dry fly fisherman’s dream river! The salmon to grilse ratio can vary year to year but is usually around 4-to-1 or better. Typical Bonnie salmon range in the mid-teens to mid-20s but 30 plus pounders are taken each year (Deep Water Ledge on B3 has produced a number of 40+ pound fish).
The Club’s guides, Jacques Bernard, Michel Bernard and Pascal St-Onge are consummate professionals with over 50 years’ experience on the river between them. They know every rock in the river and work hard to put their clients onto fish. Fishing is either from stable 26 foot Sharpe canoes or by wading.

Southern Belize, and particularly Placencia, has long been known as one of the top hotspots in the world for the elusive permit. While found in good numbers close to the mainland, the real action is found on the ocean flats located about 14 miles offshore near the barrier reef, an area known to cognoscenti as “Permit Alley”. These skinny water, white sand wading flats are gin-clear ocean water and offer what many consider the ultimate angling experience, stalking tailing permit on foot! When fishing the top 6 hours of the tide, it is not unusual for anglers to get 20, 30 or more legitimate shots at tailing permit.
Crossing the open ocean between the mainland and permit alley is a weather dependent affair in a small flats skiff. But fortunately for permit lovers, Tarpon Caye Lodge, owned and operated by world-renowned permit guide and guru, Charlie Leslie, is located smack dab in the center of this permit haven. A sea-worthy canopied 28-foot launch insures a comfortable ride out to the Caye. But permit aren’t the only game in town. For those who like diversity, there are plenty of tarpon (hence the name, Tarpon Caye), bonefish and other species to keep you occupied.

What distinguishes Tarpon Caye Lodge from other lodges is the flexibility of the daily fishing schedule. Charlie’s motto is, “we do fishing here!” Most other lodges operate on a set daily schedule, such as 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, irrespective of the tides. The permit fishing in the Alley, is extremely tide dependent. They are up on the flats feeding on the top 6-hours of the tide. If you had low tide at 12:00 noon and fished a conventional 8:00 am to 4:00 pm lodge schedule, you’d likely not see many permit between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm. However, at Tarpon Caye, if your preference is to concentrate on permit, with a tide like this, you’ll have toast and coffee at 4:00 am, and be out on the flats at daybreak to catch the last few good hours of outgoing tide. Then return to the lodge for a full breakfast and siesta, snorkeling, or use the lodge’s sea kayaks to paddle down 5 minutes to the flats on the south side of the Caye to fish on your own. Then you’ll had back out with your guide in mid-afternoon to catch the best part of the incoming and top of the tide. Fishing such a schedule practically guarantees permit anglers will have shots at fish during every hour of their fishing day!
The tarpon lagoon for which the Caye takes it’s name, is a few pole pushes from the dock, and is usually chock full of resident tarpon in the 20 – 50 pound class. From April through November, migratory ‘poons in the 50 – 100 + pound range may be encountered both in the lagoon and on a number of the deeper flats in the area. Bonefish are not only plentiful on many of the flats, but these ocean fish tend to be much larger average size than the mainland fish. All the flats are from 3 – 20 minutes run time from the dock. This may be the only destination on earth where you have a shot at a Grand Slam without traveling more than a mile from the lodge!
But flyfishing or spinfishing for the “Big Three” is just the tip of the iceberg. Opportunities for bottom fishing, conventional trolling and offshore casting and flyfishing are nearly limitless. The cut through the Barrier Reef is just 7-miles from the Caye, and the drop off just beyond can produce sailfish and blue marlin during the spring months, and what Charlie refers to as “Little Big Game Fishing” for, Dorado, wahoo, kings, amberjack, barracuda and more. The channels within minutes of the Caye also produce king mackerel, Spanish macks, wahoo, Dorado, bonito (little tunny), blackfin tuna and more. Bottom fishing yields over 7-species of groupers, 5-species of snappers, jack crevalle, bar jack, triggerfish and more. Regardless of your species or method of preference, Tarpon Caye guides are both well equipped and well schooled in catching just about anything that swims in these waters!
Accommodations at Tarpon Caye are in 3 simple but comfortable double occupancy cabañas on stilts overlooking the Home Flat to the east. Each cabaña is furnished with 2 double sized platform beds with comfortable new mattresses and head board reading lights, writing table and chair, tiled floors, cathedral ceilings to help keep the cabañas cool, fully tiled private baths with hot and cold water. Each is fronted by a private veranda with hammock and two Adirondack style deck chairs overlooking the water. For 2009, Charlie is converting the current clubhouse to a 2-bedroom, quad occupancy cabaña suite to increase occupancy from 6 to 10 guests.
The new dining room/clubhouse will feature an open-air deck & dining area overlooking the water where anglers enjoy a relaxing happy hour before sitting down to one of Tarpon Caye’s signature Caribbean Gourmet dinners. Charlie (an excellent chef himself) recruits only the very best chefs from the mainland and oversees the menu. The food is outstanding!
Power on the island is generated full 110 volt so your DVD player or other appliances will plug right in. The main generator is shut down at 9:00 pm but a 12 volt system provides ample electric lighting throughout the night. Note: a new solar power system is anticipated for 2009 which will give 110 volt service 24/7.
A pump driven 12,000 gallon rain water storage system provides ample water pressure to all the cabañas. For communications, the lodge provides free Internet service (WiFi is planned for the 2008/2009 season), free incoming calls to the lodge, and use of the phone to make outgoing calls using a prepaid phone card (available on the Caye). The new bar will even have satellite television for those who can’t live without their CNN!
When not fishing, eating or otherwise relaxing, guests may enjoy the complimentary use the lodge’s sea kayaks or snorkeling equipment. Optional snorkeling or diving charters may be arranged for non-fishing guests.

Copal Tree Lodge, Punta Gorda, located at the southern tip of Belize’s infamous “Permit Alley”, is home to one of the world’s premier permit fisheries. From the riverside marina, Copal Tree boats run 15 minutes down the Rio Grande to enter the Gulf of Honduras. The prime permit fishing areas begin at Sickle Cay, a half mile from the mouth of the river, and extends another 13 miles northeast to the Snake Cays. Within this area are hundreds of tiny islands, cayes with lagoon flats and pop up “pancake” flats just a short distance from the mainland. These include such notable fishing grounds as Mojo Caye, Wild Cane Caye and the Snake Cayes. The outside flats affiliated with many of these cayes tend to be gently sloping off into deeper water allowing permit to be found at all tidal stages. Just inshore from these cayes is the famed Ycacos Lagoon which, particularly on the higher stages of the tide, can be an amazing inshore permit fishery. The narrow channel into the lagoon can also be a hotspot for tarpon who will lie in wait at the mouth of the channel on the outgoing tide.
Tarpon and snook offer variety options for anglers. While not as abundant as permit, one should always keep an eye out for rolling poons or popping snook, especially when running the river to and from the permit grounds. Resident tarpon are present in the rivers and lagoons year round, and larger migratory fish are sometimes encountered between April and November. Snook fishing is best between November and March. If you wish to target tarpon or snook during your stay, Copal Tree offers access to many more rivers than the Rio Grande, including Golden Stream, Deep River, the Monkey River, and Moho River.
Bonefishing opportunities are limited, with the best chances existing out at the Sapodilla Cayes, a fairly long run from the lodge. While there are decent numbers of fish there, they tend to be small. If luck is with you in the morning (and you land both a permit and a tarpon), your chances of closing out the Grand Slam are good out at the Sapodillas!
Formerly known as Belcampo Belize, the lodge was completely revonvated in 2008 – 2009 as Machaca Hill and the new owner purchased the 12,000 acres of rainforest surrounding the lodge. When the lodge became Belcampo (and later Copal Tree Lodge), they continued to elevate their level of service and commitment to the keystone organic crops of cane, cacao, coffee and vanilla, and provide guests with agritourism programs that showcase these exotic ingredients at their origin. Copal Tree Lodge is situated at the plateau summit of “Big Hill or Machaca Hill” over looking the Rio Grande, the rainforest, and the Caribbean Sea. There is a private tram (or a staircase with 365 steps) to take guests from the riverside deck (which includes the waterside dining area and Maya Bar) to the lodge compound 400 feet above the Rio Grande. The lodge portion of Copal Tree cosists of the main lodge bulding with The Jungle Farm Restaurant, The Rum Bar, the spa, lounge areas, a swimming pool, and observation decks with open views of the coast, the Maya Mountains and a seemingly endless pristine rainforest. There are also 16 individual, spacious suites, which are well appointed with plush beds, screened fresh-air verandas, and spa-style bathrooms with floor to ceiling tropical rainforest views.
The Jungle Farm Restaurant runs on a farm to table philosophy that creates everything in house using ingredients grown on Copal Tree’s farm or locally sourced from nearby farmers, including compassionately and organically raised chickens, sheep and pigs, and a variety of organic produce including many local staples such as mangoes, passion fruit and pityia. The seafood is sourced locally from a team of fishermen who supply Copal Tree with sustainable fish, conch, lobster and wild shrimp. Meals at Copal Tree Lodge Belize are a blend of Mayan, East Indian, Creole, Garifuna, Latin and Indo-Caribbean inspired fare and are prepared by using traditional and modern cooking techniques. The El Pescador Villas are the luxury accommodations at El Pescador Resort on Ambergris Caye, Belize. Eight exotic and well appointed two-story villas are each comprised of 3-bedrooms, 3-bathrooms, a great room, and a verandah. All of the El Pescador Villas have coral stone tiled floors, walls filled with paintings, crafts and tapestries by local artists, and are decorated with handcrafted furniture of tropical hardwoods, bamboo, or traditional wicker. There is also an exotic array of tropical flowers and greenery tucked here and there to welcome guests to paradise.
El Pescador Resort on Ambergris Caye in Belize is the oldest and most established fishing lodge in Belize. Two sets of four villas are set on opposite ends of El Pescador’s main lodge building in the tropical gardens, surrounding a private pool, and provide stunning views. The villas are only a short walk from the main lodge; far enough away allow guests privacy but close enough to allow access to all of the amenities and services offered at El Pescador. The Great-Room in each villa is on the second floor. To access the great-room, guests ascend a dramatic plank staircase and pass through a mahogany door. All the Great-Rooms have high cathedral ceilings with polished Belizean hardwoods. In the Great-Room, there is a dining area (comfortably seating 6 for dinner), a full kitchen with all the appliances and gadgets, and a large open living area. This large open room has great views of the Caribbean, the beach, and the barrier reef.
French doors lead from the Great-Room to the 250 square foot covered verandah on the second floor. The verandahs are furnished with sofas or hammocks offering a great place to enjoy the sea breeze, the sunrise, or the sunset. The ground floor also has a covered verandah with private entrances to both downstairs suites with views of the beach, the Caribbean Sea, and the Barrier Reef. It’s no wonder that the verandahs become a favorite spot for El Pescador Villa guests.
Each two-story El Pescador Villa has 3 bedrooms, one on the second story and two on the ground floor. Each bedroom has an excellent view of the Caribbean. These master suites are fully self-contained with luxurious bathrooms, featuring his and hers hand-made ceramic sinks and matching tiles, excellent showers, spacious closets, and fluffy towels. The suites are configured to “lock-off”, enabling guests to have 1, 2, or 3 bedrooms and enjoy their own private unit. In other words, it’s possible to have the entire villa as a home-away-from-home, or request only a single suite.

El Pescador Resort on Ambergris Caye in Belize is the oldest and most established fishing lodge in Belize. It’s also one of the premier fly fishing destinations for a “Grand Slam” and one of the only areas where tarpon can be caught on the flats, year-round. Ambergris Caye is considered an island, but it is really the southern most tip of the Yucatan Peninsula, and is tucked behind the northern reaches of Belize’s barrier reef. Ambergris Caye is separated from the rest of the Yucatan by a canal dug by the Mayan’s to facilitate trade routes, and tucked behind the Belize barrier reef. The constant high-quality fishing at El Pescador is primarily due to a nearly perfect location with the protection from the reef and a neo-tropical / semi-arid climate (averaging less than a 10 degrees F variation in temperature and 25 inches of rain, year-round).
El Pescador’s fishing program is based around a healthy resident tarpon population (10 – 90 pounds) that can be found in 3-5 feet of water virtually 12 months of the year. There are few angling experiences that can rival the excitement of stalking tarpon on the clear, shallow flats located 45 minutes by boat from El Pescador. When conditions are right you might see hundreds of tarpon on the flats and jump several in a day. In late summer (July, August & September) the tarpon migration practically doubles the tarpon population at El Pescador and larger tarpon, well over 100 pounds, are available on the flats and on the reef.
In addition to the some of most productive year-round tarpon flats in the world, El Pescador has excellent fishing for bonefish and permit on protected flats closer to the lodge, and along the mangrove edges in the lee of the wind. The bonefish typically average 1-3 pounds, but larger bonefish (up to 5-6 pounds) are available. Most of the permit are less than 15 lbs and are frequently sighted in schools, however, larger permit (up to 30 pounds) typically show up during the tarpon migration.
Snook are available in the lagoons and mangrove-lined creeks, but not abundant. Also prevalent in the lagoons, on the flats, or out on the reef (in season) are Jack crevalle, barracuda, sailfish, dolphin, tuna, king mackerel, grouper, snapper, big-eyed jacks, wahoo, sharks of all sizes, and scrappy ladyfish. For fishermen who want to fish offshore or the Belize barrier reef, El Pescador has several larger (38-52 foot) boats available for charter.
El Pescador prides itself on having a staff with some of the most experienced guides in Belize; many have been guiding at El Pescador for over 20 years! The guides have extensive knowledge of this fishery that comes from a lifetime dedicated to learning where the fish are and how they behave. El Pescador guides are also excellent technical fishermen and experts at efficiently and safely handling the 23-foot Mexican super-pangas flats boats you’ll be fishing from.
The El Pescador lodge building is comprised of the dining room, bar, fly shop (the only Scientific Anglers Mastery Series Shop in Belize), and 13 guest rooms. The accommodations at El Pescador are comfortable and spacious, not fancy. Each room has a ceiling fan, air conditioning, private bath with two sinks and a hot shower, and has a view of water. Guests at El Pescador or El Pescador Villas have access to a wide variety of amenities for your enjoyment after a great day of fly-fishing, snorkeling the reef, or inland adventure. The experienced staff at El Pescador, will be happy to help you arrange help you arrange any number of activities. At El Pescador the amenities include a restaurant, a bar, 3 fresh water swimming pools, massage services, exercise room, complimentary kayaks and bicycles, fishing instructor / host, SCUBA diving instructor, concierge, WI-FI, tour office, gift and sundry shop, and the only Scientific Angler Mastery Series Fly Shop in Belize. An attractive white sand beach stretches for miles in front of the lodge. Swimming off the El Pescador dock is preferable to wading because of the amount of seaweed that gets washed ashore.
El Pescador’s restaurant specializes in native Caribbean cuisine made with fresh local produce and seafood. The meals are “family style” and each evening El Pescador either features two entrees or a buffet at dinner. Evening meals are served on the outdoor deck or in the dining room and El Pescador encourages everyone to dine together in the evening.
Pescador also offers a variety of non-fishing activities that range from snorkeling to Scuba diving to almost a dozen Eco-tour options, like one day and over night sightseeing trips to ancient Mayan ruins located on main land Belize. The town of San Pedro is 10 minutes away by boat and is comprised of several hotels and bars and can be an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon or evening. Overlooking no detail, Nomads of the Seas has designed one-week extreme fly fishing adventures and ecotourism expedition programs for a very limited amount of guests. All itineraries are based out of Atmosphere, a 150-foot mother ship specifically designed for exploring Chilean fjords in safety and extreme comfort. This ship accommodates a maximum of 18 fishing guests and 10 non-fishing guests for each trip. Atmosphere is also equipped with a Bell 407 helicopter and a fleet of jet boats, enabling anglers to penetrate the very deepest parts of the Patagonian wilderness over land, air and water. The mobility of Nomads of the Seas also allows for the flexibility required for successful fishing in an extremely variable climate.
The lakes provide rich vegetation and the ideal environment for insects, crustaceans, nymphs and small fish, creating ideal fishing conditions on the surface and on the bottom. A number of these big lakes have regulatory effects on rivers, transforming them into a calm and clear flowing habitat for fish. Nomads of the Seas calls its fishingprogram “extreme fly fishing,” which Nomads defines as “being able to fish at any spot, regardless of its accessibility, without having to stay in any specific place; with all the flexibility to deal with different weather and water conditions, and fluctuating fish behaviors . . . With the assistance of our guides and pilots you will encounter a fisherman’s dream: shallow and deep rivers, white waters, tight bends, creeks, lakes, lagoons, mountains, volcanoes, and many confined sites that are almost inaccessible without the proper training, equipment and experience.”
There is so much water and coast line and open space in this region that Nomads of the Seas has by no means stopped exploring. On virtually every expedition new water is covered, some of which has never been fished before.
Nomads of the Seas uses its helicopter and an extensive fleet, comprised of 6 fully equipped Jetboats, plus 2 SOLAS Rescue Boats, 4 Helitour Mission Zodiacs (equipped for air transport below the Bell 407), and one Huricane
920 RIB Zodiac to cover these untouched waters. The diversity of these vessels gives guests opportunities to fish for brown trout (sea-run and native), brook trout, rainbow trout, steelhead, chinook salmon and other species of land-locked salmon. One week fishing programs depart every Saturday from mid October through April.

Nomads of the Seas describes its on board cuisine as “Chilean gourmet nouvelle.” It has been specially designed by Guillermo Rodriguez, one of the most famous chefs in all of Chile. His dishes focus on traditional Chilean flavors with an exciting, modern twist.
Atmosphere is also equipped with a full bar, stocked with top brands of liquor. The bar is open all day and the drinks are included in the package rate (there are certain exceptions to this rule).
The Mothership’s cabins have been built with extreme care, priorizing comfort and safety above all. You’ll also find the décor quite tasteful, so you won’t miss anything from home.
The cabins are specially designed to emphasise passenger privacy and comfort onboard. Great efforts have been made to provide guests with natural and tasteful interiors. The 14 guest cabins are equipped with either one queen or two twin beds as well as a private bath. All guest cabins are exterior. Guests will also enjoy first class service from the attentive, live-aboard crew.The coastal sector of Patagonia and its intermediate valleys have a cold temperate western- coastline climate with peak rainfall in the winter (U.S. summer). However, there is rainfall throughout the entire year. The temperatures are not extremely low due to the influence of the sea and the action of the winds, and the coldest months are rarely below 4º C/39° F. The thermal amplitudes are not very high, with the daily and yearly ranging from 5º to 7º C/41° F to 45° F. The atmospheric humidity has a mean annual value of 87% in the zone, and no month of the year has relative humidity of less than 80%.

Many years ago we discovered El Saltamontes on the Gorrono Ranch in the Patagonia Region of Southern Chile. Most fishing is done in the Nireguao River and its oxbow lagoons, and some of the best water is only a few feet from the door of the new lodge facility. In addition to the many miles of 4-wheel drive accessible river that flows through the ranch, El Saltamontes also has the fishing rights to all of the best off-property water, including some beautiful canyon stretches accessible only on horseback, as well as oxbow lagoons and lakes for larger brown trout and smaller, remote spring creeks with fish rising eagerly to large dries.

Also, at the conclusion of each season, many of the guests are already making plans to return the following year. However, despite the number of guests rebooking each year, excellent dates remain.
Each season, each year, week after week, from January through the end of March, the dry fly fishing on the Nireguao is remarkable and, for the most part, lives up to the outlandish claims made about it. The Chilean government has even designated the Nireguao as the first “catch-and-release”, “artificials only” river in Chile. The browns gorge themselves on grasshoppers, and the grass bordering the stream is loaded with them throughout the season. Even the name of the lodge (El Saltamontes) means the grasshopper.
As in most of Patagonia, breezes range from light to strong and occasionally, a heavy rain spate may briefly cloud the water, making streamers as effective as dries. Even in unseasonably cold or wet weather, or if the wind picks up, the lodge has such a diverse fishing program, there is always some place to go to avoid the heaviest winds.
Most experienced anglers hook impressive numbers of fish in the 3 to 6 pound range during their week and nearly everyone finds the river “user friendly” and full of non-stop action with smaller fish. No other resident Brown Trout fishery in North America, South America or New Zealand is as consistently productive and the fishery continues to demonstrate their claim to being the finest resident Brown Trout fishery in the Americas.
While much of the water is on the ranch, the river flows through bordering estancias and there are other nearby regional water anglers might wish to visit. That is not to mention the new “pristine, off-property” angling opportunities that have blossomed as the guides continue explore new fisheries that, in many cases, have never seen a fly. Each two anglers share a guide and transportation; choices to the stream include horses, jeep or on foot.
The superb new lodge, nestled in a beautiful valley, is luxurious by any angling standards. The lodge is constructed completely from local timber and river stones, the furnishings and final touches reflect the Gorrono family commitment to make this the finest fishing lodge in South America. Each of the five guestrooms have private baths and all have magnificent views. El Saltamontes remains a small, intimate experience by continuing to allow only 8 fishermen and two non-anglers each week of its short season.

Cultural Visits: A visit to some of the neighboring farms and villages is a fascinating day trip. It is often the most memorable part of a guest’s trip to Chile. The local rural people live a lifestyle like one would imagine it to have been like in the Western U.S. a century ago.
Horseback Riding: The area around El Saltamontes is horse country and endless trails lead off in all directions through spectacular mountain vistas and virgin forest. The Gorrono family are all expert horse people, and keep a wonderful stable of well-mannered, sure-footed horses appropriate for any skill level of rider.
El Saltamontes Itinerary
DAY 1 (Saturday) -Travelers usually arrive in Santiago, Chile in the morning, however the trip to the lodge from the States can be done in a single day, but much more comfortably by allowing a night en route in Santiago. Most of our guests transfer to the historic and lovely Carrera Hotel, adjacent to the Governor’s Palace in the city center to relax for a day and acclimate. It is authentically Chilean and the accommodations are located near Santiago’s cultural center, best shopping, excellent bars and restaurants, and nightlife. There are other hotel options.
DAY 2 (Sunday) – After a comfortable night in Santiago, guests fly (jet) to the newly constructed Balmaceda Air Terminal, where they are met by hosts Jose and Erica Gorrono and taken to the lodge. The trip to El Saltamontes by van is about a two and half hours and is accented by beautiful roadside streams and waterfalls.
Upon arrival at El Saltamontes, you’ll be introduced to the staff and accommodations. The Gorrono’s impressive, single story lodge and ranch house is in the shadow of the snow-capped Andes. After the brief orientation and a chance to settle in and organize tackle, anglers are free to fish with their guides for the remainder of the day.
The browns actively feed on grasshoppers and other terrestrials throughout the Patagonian summer months of January, February and March making dry flies are very effective and anglers seldom have to resort to subsurface patterns while fishing at El Saltamontes. Anglers often release trophy Browns during the week.
The after angling cocktail reception always includes Pisco Sour, the Chilean version of a Margarita, a complimentary bar and fine domestic wines. Non-alcoholic beverages are available. The first evening’s dinner is a little later than usual to allow for a full afternoon of fishing. Dinners, like all meals at the lodge are informal, superb and accompanied the by finest Chilean and Argentine wines.
DAYS 2-6 (Monday thru Friday) – These are full fishing days and the exact schedule will depend on the guests wishes. Breakfast and dinner will be served in the lodge and fine mid-day meals are served in the field.
An asado, the traditional South American lamb barbecue highlights the last night at the lodge. Neighbors often attend and music and native folk songs provide a memorable accent to the trip.
DAY 7 (Saturday) – Anglers will be transported to the local airport and begin their journey home starting with the flight to Santiago via Puerto Montt.
Belize River Lodge is located on the banks of the Belize River, about 3.5 miles from the mouth. The lodge is secluded in the jungle lined western banks of the river and the location allows anglers access to a wide variety of fishing in the river for large migratory Tarpon, juvenile Tarpon, and Snook as well as flats fishing for Permit, Tarpon, and Bonefish. In addition, Belize River Lodge is located only 15 minutes from the international airport, making it one of the most convenient fishing options in Belize.

Belize River Lodge can accommodate a total of 16 guests in a four bedroom “Guest House”, a two bedroom “Cottage”, or a two bedroom “Bungalow”. The accommodations are constructed of native mahogany and surrounded by tropical greenery and exotic flowers. Each room has a ceiling fan and its own bath and hot shower. All rooms have air conditioning. All of the buildings, including the dining room / living area, are within 50 feet of the river. The lodge buildings are decorated in tropical Belizean ambiance and have an appealing old world charm.
Outstanding seafood and native dishes are served. Owner Mike Heusner, managed the lodge when it was known as Keller’s Caribbean Sports, before purchasing and renaming the property to Belize River Lodge in January 1987. He and his associate, Marguerite Miles, are a very competent management team, Mike as a fishing outfitter and Marguerite as hostess and chef.
The fishing in the Belize River, and on the nearby saltwater flats, is done from sturdy 23 foot pangas (skiffs) guided by experienced, English-speaking native Belize guides. However, there is a good amount of wading on some of the saltwater flats. The mangrove lined rivers, which at times can teem with spawning tarpon and snook, that are fished from the lodge include: the Belize River, Black Creek, Sibun River, Manatee River, and numerous creeks and lagoons in between.
Moving into saltwater, the mouth of the Belize River can be a hot spot for big Tarpon. And, the flats among the coastline and nearby cays offer sight fishing for bonefish, permit, tarpon and snook. Other available species include cubera, snapper, jacks, barracuda, grouper and more. Many species of birds and other wildlife such as manatees, howler monkeys, iguanas, turtles, snakes and occasionally crocodiles may be seen while fishing from the lodge.
Belize River Lodge also offers a remote Outpost Camp on Long Caye and a live aboard vessel as exciting options that extend beyond just staying at the lodge.
Long Caye Outpost
The Outpost camp on Long Caye is situated right in the middle of some of Belize’s most fertile fishing grounds, giving anglers access to productive fishing areas like St. George’s Caye or Miami Beach less than 10 minutes. In fact, the Long Caye area is well known for producing good numbers of Grand Slams (catching a Tarpon, Permit and Bonefish in the same day). The Outpost Camp can accommodate up to 6 anglers in 3-double occupancy air-conditioned rooms and is equipped with a shared bathroom, a full veranda, ceiling fans, generator power, and a private island, only shared with your guides and Belize River Lodge staff. Rooms are outfitted with twin beds, but can be made into King size beds if desired.
Since the guides do not go home each night, the fishing hours are unlimited. Get up at daybreak, fish, come back for breakfast, fish, snorkel, have lunch. Fish, siesta, have dinner. Then fish until dark or after dark! No TV or telephones, but the vessels are equipped with marine radios.
This system affords the serious angler the greatest variety of fishing conditions and the opportunity to catch a variety of fish species such as tarpon, snook, bonefish, permit, several types of snapper and grouper, jack, barracuda, shark, mackerel and others.

Turneffe Island Resort is located on the Caye Bokel, in the southern part of Turneffe Atoll Island Chain. The Turneffe Atoll is located 30 miles off the coast of Belize and the only inhabitants on Caye Bokel are the resorts personnel and guests.
Turneffe Island Resort is 5 – 10 minutes from clear, pristine flats. If you enjoy walking the flats in pursuit of bonefish and permit, there is no better place than Turneffe Atoll’s miles upon miles of ankle deep flats that lie between the Turneffe Islands and the surrounding reef. These flats are composed of hard sand, coral and eelgrass and nearly all these flats are wadable. It’s not uncommon to see schools of 25 or more tailing bonefish against the dramatic and unusual background of palm-studded mangrove islands and crashing white surf on the barrier reef that is unlike anywhere else in the world.

Tarpon are available in mangrove creeks from approximately mid-May through December with the peak tarpon fishing occurring June, July and August. The average size of the tarpon landed at Turneffe Island Resort is between 40 – 50 lbs, but during the peak of the migration, it’s possible to get shots at 150 lb + fish.
Permit
Tailing permit sometimes appear on the shallow flats on the high tides. However, permit are also available on the deeper flats, creeks, or deeper water areas like “the elbow”.
Other Species
There is excellent grouper and snapper fishing in the many mangrove creeks surrounding the lodge.
To preserve this special fishery, the resort has limited the number of anglers each week to 8 and rotate fishing certain flats to insure the fish stay hungry and happy. English is the native language of Belize, a former English colony. The guides at Turneffe Island Resort have years of experience fishing and guiding anglers on these waters. The guides fish out of Dolphin Super Skiffs with 50 HP, 4-stroke outboard engines.
Turneffe Island Resort has first-rate facilities, especially considering its remote location. All rooms and cabanas (optional upgrade) have been extensively renovated. Every room at Turneffe Island Resort opens up to a lovely white sand beach and has ceiling fans, air conditioning and a private bathroom. We recommend it for wives and families provided everyone enjoys diving or fishing. When you visit this beautiful island you are guaranteed privacy. Turneffe Island Resort will organize special events, such as picnics and boating for “non activity” guests, but realize that all activities center around the water. Non-activity guests are welcomed, and may enjoy windsurfing, volleyball, kayaking, swimming, sunfish sail boat use and beach combing.
Diving: The most spectacular dive sites in Belize – Lighthouse Reef, Blue Hole, Glovers Reef and Half Moon Caye – are all within an hour ride by boat. (Call for diving rates). Excellent snorkeling / diving is also available near the lodge. Turneffe Island Lodge operates two new Pro 48 boats. One is used for the diving program and the other used for guest transfer and deep-sea fishing. There is no better diving in the Caribbean.
A 50% deposit is necessary to reserve space at Turneffe Island Resort and after receiving your deposit we will send a complete list of tackle and equipment to bring. Final payment is due 65 days prior to departure.

Pesca Maya Fishing Lodge is located 90 miles south of Cancun in the amazing 1.3 million acre Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve– Sian Ka’an is Mayan for “where the sky is born”. Situated on a long, narrow strip of barrier beach, the lodge is virtually surrounded by water. To the east lies the blue Caribbean and a few hundred yards off shore, the Palencar Barrier Reef, the second longest barrier reef in the world, stretching from southern Belize to north of Cancun. To the western side lies the vast “El Rio” system of flats, channels and mangrove. 10 miles to the north is the famed inlet through the barrier beach known locally as the “Boca”. And 4 miles to the south lies the incomparable Ascension Bay, offering some of the world’s greatest flats fishing for bonefish, permit, snook, tarpon and more.

The Fishing: The waters of Ascension Bay and the adjacent lagoon system are most noted for flats fishing. Pesca Maya’s location is ideal to fish both areas. The dock is a short walk from the lodge and productive fishing can begin immediately.
When fishing Ascension Bay, the boats run 10 minutes south to the outlet of the lagoon into the bay. From there, running times to some of the most productive areas are: 5 minutes to Maravilla, 25 minutes to Cayo Culebra; 40 minutes to Tres Marias; 30 minutes to Esperanza or the tip of Vigia Grande. Blessed with the protection afforded by the barrier reef, the bay is a unique ecosystem providing literally miles of flats and ideal habitat for bonefish, tarpon, permit and snook. Ascension Bay is widely regarded as one of the world’s finest permit fisheries. The average size permit is around 12 – 14 pounds but the Bay has produced monsters topping the 50-pound mark! And for some unknown reason, Ascension Bay permit seem to eat flies better than permit in other areas. For flyrodders in quest of landing this most coveted and challenging of species, we know of no other fishery that produces more fly caught permit than Ascension Bay.
While migratory tarpon up to 100 + pounds may be encountered on the flats anytime from April through November, resident juvenile tarpon are found near the back of the bay year round. Areas like Los Rios (The Rivers) bring fresh water into the bay providing an ideal brackish water environment tarpon favor.
The back of the bay is also where you’ll find the snook. Ascension Bay produces some exceptionally large snook, some topping 30 pounds! They are typically found tight to the mangroves presenting dual challenges of getting the fly to them, and then landing them! But on occasion, you’ll find them crossing the flat. Seeing a 20 + pound snook cruising across shallow open water is a thing of beauty!
The bay opens to the east and periods of strong easterly winds can make fishing difficult. One solution is to fish the El Rio lagoon system, which runs north and south and offers miles of flats protected from the easterly wind by the barrier beach and vast mangrove system.
Fishing El Rio Lagoon
Fishing the lagoon can begin at El Rio Lagoon, and fish are sometimes caught within poling distance of the Pesca Maya dock (one client caught a 20 pound permit within 100 feet of the dock!). Heading north the lagoon system are San Miguel Lagoon (20 minutes); the “Boca” and Boca Paila Lagoon (45 minutes); and the Campachen Lagoon (60 minutes). Bonefish and permit are found the entire length of the lagoon and there a few known hot spots for baby tarpon and snook.
Bonefish are plentiful at Pesca Maya and will average 1 – 3 pounds in the lagoon system and 2 – 5 pounds in the bay. In recent years, the average size of the bones seems to have increased, and fish in the 6 – 8 pound class may be encountered in the bay. There are an abundance of good wading flats for bonefish on Ascension Bay, and permit are often taken by the wading fisherman.
This fishery has produced more “Grand Slams” (bonefish, permit, tarpon in a single day) than any other fishery in the world, and the rare Super Grand Slam (the snook as the 4th) has been achieved a number of times. Other species you might encounter include barracuda, jacks, mutton snapper, ladyfish, triple tail and cubera snapper.

Fishing from the beach at Pesca Maya can also be productive. Beach fishing can be done on your own before or after the guided fishing day. Available species from the beach include: bonefish, barracuda, jacks and mackerel. For jacks and mackerel try poppers or sinking lines.
Pesca Maya Boats
Pesca Maya runs a fleet of 23 foot, shallow draft “pangas” powered by 50 – 60 hp 4-stroke Yamaha outboards. All 8 boats were completely redone with new gel coat and paint in 2013. The boats are equipped poling platforms and casting decks with optional leaning posts, rod holders, comfortable bucket seats for the anglers, radio and safety equipment including life preservers and first aid kits. These pangas are exceptionally seaworthy and feature higher gunnels, which provide added protection from splash on windy days.
Pesca Maya boats carry 2 anglers, one guide and one “apprentice guide”. All of the guides speak English, (some better than others) and have years of experience. In fact the core of the guide staff have guided for the lodge since it opened in 1996. The apprentice’s are part of Pesca Maya’s innovative guide training program. Each must participate in the lodge’s “Guide School” (and pass) before spending several years as an apprentice guide. Those who excel ultimately are promoted to Guide. The apprentices are adept at basic guide skills including knot tying and spotting fish and can be a tremendous aid to the anglers, especially when wading.
Pesca Maya’s rental tackle inventory has also been beefed up with the addition of 8 new top of the line Sage Xi3 rods with Hatch reels spooled with new Rio Bonefish taper flylines. 10 new Shimano spinning rods and reels are also available for spinfishers.
Accomodations at Pesca Maya Fishing Lodge
Pesca Maya offers accommodations in a beautiful 4-bedroom house for up to 8 anglers at a time. The house is located a few steps from our white sand beach. Close enough where guests can enjoy the Caribbean breeze and the sound of the waves. The four double occupancy rooms are well appointed and very comfortable, each has air conditioning and a quality Starlink internet connection. Pesca Maya uses solar panels to provide the electricity.
The house has a comfortable dining room where Pesca Maya serves a variety of Mexican dishes for dinner. Breakfasts are also expertly prepared and served in the dinning room. A lunch buffet is set out each morning consisting of a selection of meats, spreads, breads, condiments, fruits and other snacks for anglers to build their own designer lunch. There is a comfortable sperate sitting area with a sea view where clients are often found enjoying a cold beer after a long day of fishing.
While first and foremost a fishing lodge, non-anglers will feel welcome at Pesca Maya. Besides miles of world-class beaches to comb, the lodge can arrange a number of ecotours or sightseeing excursions including a boat trip to the Mayan ruins at Tulum.

Flamingo Cay Lodge is the only lodge situated on Andros’ famous west side. Other lodges do fish Andros’s west side, but only by navigating the island’s creek system for up to an hour by boat over choppy seas, often at an additional fuel surcharge. From Flamingo Cay, huge western bones are only minutes away. Flamingo Cay was acquired by the Bethell Family in the 1920’s. Charles W.F. Bethell maintained the property for waterfowl shooting in the 1950’s and was host to The Duke of Windsor and other celebrities. Grandson and current owner/operator Charles B.M. Bethell III, restored the existing camp and has developed a unique sporting destination for waterfowl and flats fishing enthusiasts.
Huge schools of medium to large bonefish roam Andros’ pristine, white sand flats and permit and tarpon are sometimes found along the shoreline and in many of the island’s rivers and lagoons.
Flamingo Cay has the latest up-to-date flats boats, including 4 Hell’s Bay Boat Works, powered by 90HP motors and a Air Gator airboat for special hunting and fishing tours.
Guides are experienced and have access to miles of unpressured flats. Some of Andros’s biggest bonefish call these western flats home and seldom see flies.
Anglers can also fish William Island and Billy Island, 45 minutes or so from the lodge via one of the Hell’s Bay skiffs. Besides big bones, this area is home to resident tarpon and permit.
The vast creek systems on Andros’ west side form a complex of mangrove swamps. Anglers sit up high above the marsh watching ducks, egrets, and other birds scatter in all directions. Hidden within these mangroves are inland flats that become landlocked during certain tides. At these times the angler can enjoy a “captive audience” of bonefish; the fishing can be spectacular. Anglers are dropped off and the bottom is suitable for wading. Flamingo Cay is also offering exploratory trips to south-west Andros by float plane.
Flamingo Cay Club offers four-star amenities and gourmet dining. It is accessed primarily by seaplane. It will become clear, looking down on Andros from the air, exactly why Flamingo Cay Club has become so well know for great fishing in an extremely secluded setting. Thousands of miles of unexplored, untouched bonefish flats extend in all directions. Flamingo Cay is alone on Andros’ entire west coast, approximately 30 miles from the nearest outpost. Cruising schools of bonefish are visible as you make your final approach and land on the flats directly in front of the lodge.
Flamingo Cay lodging includes three cottages. “Last Cast” is a two story cottage the can accommodate up to 6 guests in 4 bedrooms. The upper level has two bedrooms with 2 full-sized beds in each as well as a private bath and sitting area with French doors that open onto an upper deck that boasts an incredible view of the creek.
The lower level has 2 large bedrooms, each featuring a queen-sized bed and private bath. These rooms have French doors that open onto a porch. Spacious lounging areas and a wet bar complete this cottage.
“Cloyd’s Cottage” accommodates up to 4 guests and consists of 2 bedrooms, each with 2 full-sized beds and private bath. This cottage has French doors that open onto a porch, complete with a self-service wet bar and sitting area overlooking the creek.
A smaller cottage, “Blast and Cast,” features two private bedrooms, each with one full-sized bed and a shared bath. This quaint cottage features French doors that open onto a private deck overlooking the creek.
Flamingo Cay’s capacity is 8 persons. The lodge is open for fishing from October 15th to June 5th. Fishing and waterfowl shooting can be combined during the shooting season (October 15th – March 31st).
The lodge is only accessible by air therefore; clients are transported via floatplane. All floatplane commuters originate from Nassau. There are two flight options available into Flamingo Cay. A Cessna Caravan charter for groups of four or more or two smaller floatplanes.

The vast flats of South Andros have been one of our favorite bonefishing destinations for over 2 decades. This is a true wilderness fishery, offering an incredible variety of places to target bonefish. There are a myriad of creeks, cuts, cays and mangrove lagoons to explore with the skiff. Best of all, and our favorite part, there are miles and miles of firm, clean sand flats where you can wade for days! These flats are home to massive schools of nicely sized bones (3 – 5 lbs), as well as singles or smaller pods of bruisers ranging well above the double digit mark!
Sitting at the end of civilization, literally “the end of the road” on South Andros, is Mars Bay Bonefish Lodge – a down-to-earth, comfortable, no frills fishing lodge for anglers focused on great fishing, not the amenities.
The guides are excellent, the staff is friendly and attentive, and the rooms are clean, comfortable and cool with new beds and new AC units. The food is always a highlight; with a carefully planned menu balancing meals focused on local flavors and comfort food. Don’t forget about the location! Mars Bay offers the shortest travel time of any other operation on Andros to the Southern Flats, which can equal as much as an extra full day of fishing time on a week long trip. Add in that the guides work as hard as any guide we’ve fished with, plus they don’t punch a clock at 4:00 PM, and we’ve got a recipe for some of the longest fishing days you’ll find in the Bahamas.
Mars Bay was 99% full last year, but a few recent group cancellations have opened up some excellent space for the Spring 2018 season, especially for some larger groups.
