    Limay River Ranch

    Updated on

Limay River Ranch sits on 80,000 acres in the high desert of Argentine Patagonia, with immediate access to the clear, productive Limay tailwater. Owners Ron Sorensen and Diego Gaiser developed this fishery over many years and opened the lodge in 2022 after decades of outfitting experience. The river is right out the front door, so logistics do not limit fishing time.

The Limay offers prolific hatches, strong rainbow numbers, and large migratory browns from El Chocón Reservoir. Anglers can fish multiple techniques in a single day: dries, dry-droppers, streamers, and sight fishing along rocky banks. The ranch controls over 30 miles for floating and 12 linear miles for wading side channels.

The lodge has six contemporary cabins around a central main lodge, strong food and hospitality, and practical angler-first logistics. Starlink WiFi, high renewable-energy coverage, and consistently renewed drift boats make this an excellent base for serious trout anglers.

    The Limay Tailwater

The Limay tailwater is one of Patagonia’s most productive fisheries. Anglers fish riffles, drop-offs, rocky edges, and side channels with dry flies, dry-droppers, and streamers. The ranch controls over 30 miles of float water and 12 miles of wade water, allowing broad daily options and minimal pressure.

    Migratory Brown Trout

Migratory browns from El Chocón enter the river from mid-December and spread through January. These fish commonly run from the low 20s to well over 30 inches. Late summer and fall can be especially strong for anglers targeting larger fish.

    Season and Techniques

Summer hatches are strongest from late spring into January, terrestrial fishing peaks mid-summer, and fall hatches build through April and into May. Anglers fish 0X to 5X with dries, attractors, droppers, and streamers depending on water and weather.

    Accommodations at Limay River Ranch

Limay River Ranch features six private cabins (double occupancy) and a central main lodge with dining, bar, and social areas. The layout is modern, comfortable, and built around long fishing days.

Each cabin includes private bath, climate control, wood stove, and outdoor deck. The main lodge is a gathering point for meals, drinks, and daily planning.

    Updated on

Collón Curá Lodge sits on the banks of the lower Collón Curá River in Northern Patagonia. With more than 30 miles of exclusive river access, the lodge offers anglers an intimate base from which to explore one of the region’s most prolific trout fisheries. Just 45 minutes from the nearest airport, Collón Curá combines easy access with the kind of solitude and privacy that defines Patagonian fishing.

The Collón Curá is a classic freestone river—willow-lined banks, sand cliffs, rolling hills, and braided channels that remind many anglers of rivers in the American West. Rainbow and brown trout average 14 to 22 inches, with larger fish possible. The river sees consistent hatches and rewards dry flies, nymphs, and streamers. Both floating and wading are productive. Late in the season, the lodge also provides access to prime beats on the Limay River, about 90 minutes away, where big browns migrate into the river.

The lodge itself is warm and traditional: four comfortable double rooms for up to eight guests, a shared living room, and a separate dining room. Guest quarters are housed in a standalone cabin for tranquillity. Argentine hospitality runs deep—picadas and cocktails await anglers returning from the river, followed by refined dinners featuring Angus and Hereford beef or lamb cooked on the cross. As a purpose-built fishing lodge, Collón Curá is best suited for anglers who are there to fish.

    Fishing at Collón Curá Lodge

    The Collón Curá River

The lodge is positioned on the lower stretch of the Collón Curá, with private access to more than 30 miles of the river. The river sits within a 93,000-acre private ranch that encompasses the Collón Curá; as it flows from north to south, it collects waters from various tributaries, creating exceptional biodiversity that makes it one of Northern Patagonia’s most productive trout rivers. Riffle pools, braided channels, and deep drop-off pools bordered by willows and high-cut banks create ideal conditions for resident browns and rainbows. Anglers drift from point to point in modern drift boats, stopping to wade riffles, back channels, and braids along the way. The river features strong seasonal hatches, excellent hopper fishing, and consistent action on dry flies, nymphs, and streamers. Foam lines and willow-lined banks are particularly productive for dry-fly anglers using long leaders and small patterns.

    The Limay and Caleufu

A major advantage of staying at Collón Curá is access to the Limay River, about 90 minutes by road. Towards the end of the season, large brown trout move into the Limay, and the lodge serves as a convenient base for anglers targeting these fish. The Caleufu River is also within reach for those seeking additional variety.

    Our Guides

Expert local guides know the river intimately and will take you to areas with good current and structure. Fishing licenses are organized in advance so you can start fishing immediately upon arrival.

    Season Overview

December – May: The fishing season runs from December through May. Each month brings distinct conditions—spring flows and aggressive fish early on, terrestrial action and hoppers in summer, and cooling water with migrating browns in fall. Flexibility with techniques (streamers, dry flies, nymphs) pays off as water levels and weather vary.

    Accommodations at Collón Curá Lodge

Collón Curá Lodge is designed for anglers who want to focus on fishing. The main lodge building houses a shared living room where guests gather after a day on the water for drinks, hors d’oeuvres, and stories. A separate dining room sits a short walk away—ideal for evening strolls under the Patagonian sky.

Guest accommodation is in a standalone cabin close to the main lodge, offering tranquillity and separation from the common areas. Four comfortable double rooms sleep up to eight guests, each with a private bathroom.

Dining: The cuisine is authentically Argentine. Continental breakfast features freshly baked bread and dulce de leche. Shore-side river lunches include Malbec and the staples of Argentine picnic fare. Evening dinners are refined but relaxed—tender Angus and Hereford beef or lamb cooked on the cross, paired with fine local wines. Cocktails and picadas (Argentine hors d’oeuvres) are always on offer when anglers return from the river.

    Fishing at Le Fario Lodge

    The Waters

Le Fario Lodge sits in the heart of Los Alerces National Park, within easy reach of the region’s best trout waters. The program focuses on spring creeks, small lakes, and rivers up to the larger waters at hand. Whether you prefer to walk, wade, or float on lakes or rivers, the guides tailor each day to your style. Rivers include the Rio Rivadavia, Rio Arrayanes, and both stretches of the Rio Futaleufu; lakes include Lago Verde, Lago Krugger, and Laguna Larga—right beside the lodge. Each location is chosen for its seasonal peak, from dry-fly action to deep runs full of eager trout.

    Le Fario Program (Los Alerces)

The standard Le Fario program runs seven nights with six and a half days of fishing. You’ll fish a different water each day—Rio Arrayanes, Lago Verde, Rio Futaleufu (first and second stretches), Rio Frey and Lago Krugger, Rio Rivadavia—and wrap the final morning on Laguna Larga before driving back to Esquel. All logistics, meals, and transport are handled by the lodge. The program runs November 1 through May 1.

Le Fario & Brookiland (Río Pico / Brook Trout)

For anglers who want trophy brook trout, the Le Fario & Brookiland program combines two areas: Le Fario in the Esquel / Los Alerces region and Brookiland in the Río Pico area, about three hours apart. Brookiland is a boutique retreat accommodating four guests, with access to El Engaño, Falso Engaño, Rio Corcovado, and Lago Vinter—waters that hold some of Patagonia’s healthiest brook trout populations. Trophy brook and rainbow trout average 20–25 inches, with larger fish possible. This program is ideal for a Patagonia Trophy Grand Slam (brown, rainbow, brook). The seven-night itinerary splits time between both lodges.

    Our Guides

Argentina Waters guides are authorized by Chubut province and National Parks and know these waters intimately. One guide accompanies every two anglers. Each guide is equipped with professional tackle, rafts, oars, and everything needed for the day. Fishing typically starts around 8 AM and ends around 8 PM, depending on season and daylight.

    Season Overview

November 1 – May 1: Main season. Early season (November, early December) can offer strong dry-fly action as waters clear. Mid-season brings consistent hatches and eager trout. Late season often sees larger fish and more technical fishing as waters cool.

    Accommodations at Le Fario Lodge

Le Fario is a cozy lodge on the banks of Laguna Larga, inside Los Alerces National Park. Gonzalo and Laura Martinez—owners, hosts, and both trained chefs—do their best to make every guest feel at home. Gonzalo is an experienced fly fishing guide who knows the area by heart; Laura serves as lodge manager and is also a skilled chef.

Each of the four Le Fario rooms features a king-sized bed and a spacious private bathroom overlooking the lake and the Andes. The lodge has a spacious living room with a central wood fireplace and expansive windows offering views of the surrounding landscape. An outdoor hot tub sits next to the lodge for use anytime. A wooden wader room provides a comfortable place to change before and after fishing; a sauna is available next to it. A well-stocked wine cave offers a wide selection of Argentine wines.

Estancia Laguna Verde — Jurassic Lake, Patagonia

Jurassic Lake—locals call it Lago Strobel—is Patagonia’s windswept trophy factory, and Estancia Laguna Verde is the only program that combines private shoreline on the lake with full access to the Barrancoso River and the surrounding chain lakes. From the lodge’s perch above the property’s namesake lagoon, anglers chase the heaviest rainbows on the continent while enjoying polished hospitality, single-room options, and guides who know every bay and beat by name.

This is still the wild Patagonian steppe: five hours from El Calafate, big skies, bigger wind, and rainbows that average seven to nine pounds with legitimate double-digit fish landed every week. Laguna Verde’s seasoned crew keeps you on the fish with a fleet of Hilux trucks, quad access to remote bays, and a flexible daily plan that adjusts to wind direction and water levels.

Species: Trophy rainbows to 20+ pounds, plus resident browns and brookies in the chain lakes.

Season: October through April — peak lake windows December–March, prime Barrancoso runs early and late.

Weather: Expect steady Patagonian wind, cool nights, and dramatic shifts—layers, wading jackets, and sun protection are mandatory.

Location: Five hours west of El Calafate, Santa Cruz province — private shoreline on Lago Strobel plus exclusive Barrancoso River beats.

Tell us how you like to fish—swinging buggers in Monster Bay, sight-casting mouse patterns to new arrivals in the Barrancoso, or hunting brookies in the chain lakes. We’ll build the exact week around your priorities.

Why Anglers Chase Jurassic Lake Rainbows

Strobel’s rainbows simply feed harder than any stillwater trout on the planet. Fueled by dense scud populations, they cruise Monster, Camelot, and Sea bays in clear water where you can sight-cast streamers, nymphs, or giant foam mice and watch fish in the mid-teens inhale the fly. The lodge’s private access covers more than twenty kilometres of shoreline, so your guide always has a protected bay in the wind and fresh water to explore.1

Even by Patagonia standards, the variety is staggering. Morning on the Barrancoso river can mean swinging small streamers through boulder-filled runs for chrome bright fish fresh from the lake; afternoons might move to Moro Creek or one of a dozen smaller lagoons where resident browns and brookies crush terrestrials. Guides carry full-day lunches, flex the schedule around weather, and keep you moving with Hilux trucks and ATVs staged across the estancia.

    How the Program Flows

Guests typically arrive in El Calafate on Friday night, then transfer about five hours across the steppe on Saturday morning. Each fishing day starts with a briefing in the mudroom before splitting among Strobel bays, the Barrancoso, or the chain lakes. Expect one guide per two anglers, 4WD moves between spots, and quad shuttles or short walks when wind dictates a different bay. Lunches are cooked on-site and afternoons remain fluid—if the river is rising with fresh fish, guides pivot the plan so you’re there when it lights up.2

Bring quiver-building tackle: 7- or 8-weight rods with aggressive floating lines for the lake, intermediate or sink tips for heavy chop, and 5- or 6-weight outfits for the Barrancoso. Heavy fluorocarbon (0X–2X) is the norm on Strobel, while clear river water often calls for 8–10 lb leaders. The lodge stocks loaner rods and reels if something breaks, and there is a small pro shop with spare flies and essentials.

    Lodge Life & Amenities

Laguna Verde’s estancia house blends Patagonian character with thoughtful comforts: ten single-occupancy rooms plus two doubles (all en suite), 24-hour electricity, Wi-Fi, a full bar, wine tastings in the cave, and twice-weekly laundry. Evenings revolve around chef-driven meals—Patagonian lamb asado, handmade pastas, and Mendoza varietals—followed by fly tying or stargazing under southern skies.2

Jurassic Lake, locally known as Lago Strobel, has garnered a reputation as the most prolific Rainbow Trout fishery in the world. Located in the rugged Steppe or “messita” region of southern Argentina’s Santa Cruz province, Jurassic Lake is the place for trophy Rainbow Trout on a fly. Lago Strobel is a 40 square mile lake and the average Rainbow landed from Jurassic Lake is close to 10 pounds, with fish breaking the 20 pound mark caught almost weekly.

Jurassic Lake is popular among anglers looking for their personal best Rainbow, but it’s not a destination for everyone. It’s located in one of the world’s most desolate, windswept landscapes, 5 hours from the closest airport, El Calafate City. Anglers who make the long journey stay at Estancia Laguna Verde Lodge.

Estancia Laguna Verde offers more than 6 miles of Jurassic Lake coastline accessible from the lodge and a few more remote areas only accessible by boat (when the weather allows). Guests at Estancia Laguna Verde have access to “Monsters Bay”, which was named after the consistent numbers and size of the trout landed in the bay and considered to be the best fishing area on Jurassic Lake. Anglers will also fish the productive Camelot Bay, Moro Bay, Horse Shoe Bay, Finger Bay, Sea Bay, Tazmania Bay, Dry Fly Bay, Puesto Bay, and The Aquarium. Fishing in the Bays offers some protection from the ever present wind. On calmer days, the sight fishing with small nymphs or large dry flies can be spectacular in all of the bays.

Estancia Laguna Verde is a 37,000 acre ranch on the southern shore of Jurassic Lake. The estancia encompasses 12 chain lakes connected by Moro Creek, and 5-miles of the Barrancoso River, which is the sole tributary to Jurassic Lake. The smaller chain lakes each have their own stock of big Rainbows. The Estancia and Lodge’s namesake, Laguna Verde, is full of 4 – 8 pound Rainbows, with fish over 10 pounds caught regularly, and is a short walk from the lodge. Many anglers catch their personal best Rainbow while “warming up” on Laguna Verde, before making a single cast into Jurassic Lake. Estancia Laguna Verde has made substantial improvements to the exiting roads inside the estancia and added new roads, allowing anglers easier access to the best fishing areas. The new infrastructure has improved the efficiency of travel, resulting in more time on the water for clients. Also added was a “lake cabin” on the shore of Jurassic Lake, where anglers can enjoy lunch, a siesta, or just take a coffee / matte break out of the wind. Estancia Laguna Verde now has access to 4 beats on Moro Creek, which are accessible by 4-Wheel Drive ATV’s or by truck.

Unlike the short sea-run trout fishing season on the nearby Gallegos or in Tierra del Fuego, Jurassic Lake has excellent fishing for almost 6 full months, from November – April. The higher water levels in November & December offer sight fishing on the Moro Creek and there are lots of large Rainbows still in the Barrancoso River, as well as in Jurassic Lake. Lower water in January – mid-March focuses fishing for big rainbows in the lakes, with mostly smaller trout in the Barrancoso River. As water levels start to rise in late-March – April, there are more big rainbows running back into the Barrancoso River, preparing to spawn.

The lodge on Estancia Laguna Verde is a traditional “Estancia House” with 7 guest rooms, accommodating a maximum of 12 anglers, each with a private bathroom. Estancia Laguna Verde Lodge is not luxurious, but given its remoteness, it is quite comfortable. Guests enjoy amenities like 24-hour electricity, 24-hour hot water, satellite TV on a 42″ LCD TV, wireless internet, and twice weekly laundry service. There’s also a changing room/drying facility, located by the entrance to the lodge for anglers to change before and after the fishing day, as well as to store / dry fishing gear, such as waders, wading boots, rods, reels, vests, etc.

Fishing Jurassic Lake requires rods capable of handling strong winds and fish that could go over 20 pounds. Fast action 9 / 10 foot rods in the 7 – 9 weight range are excellent choices, with a high quality, large abor reel. Almost all of the fishing is done with floating lines, but having a variety of lines like floating, sink tip, sinking lines with a medium sink rate and a shooting head type fly lines is recommend so you can adapt to conditions. Jurassic Lake trout aren’t leader shy, so heavy tippets are recommended to keep the enormous fish from braking off. For the Barrancoso River, 8 / 9 foot rods in 5 – 6 weight are adequate. When fishing the beautiful Barrancoso River, 9 ft. leaders in lighter tippet sizes (8-10 lbs) are recommended, as the water is clear and the fish can be spooky and challenging at times.

Top dry flies are: Mice, Chernobyl Ant, Tarantula, Madam X, Gypsy King, Stimulator (yellow and green), and Stimulator Rubber legs in sizes 6 – 10. Estancia Laguna Verde suggests a variety of weighted and unweighted Woolly Buggers, scuds, zonkers, and matukas in sizes 4 – 10. Don’t forget a selection of nymph’s and typical western flies for some of the more technical fishing. There is also a small fly shop at the lodge with a limited supply of waders, jackets, leaders, flies, tying materials, lines, rods, reels, and other fishing equipment. Also, in the event that something gets broken or lost, the lodge has some loaner tackle (Echo Rods and Islander Reels) that anglers can borrow. Don’t forget the “Flexi Stripper” stripping baskets, helpful when making long casts in the lake as well as protecting lines from the rocky coastline.

    Updated on

Rio Manso Lodge is located on the Eastern bank of Lake Hess and the Manso River in the Nahuel Huapi National Park (the first national park in Argentina), deep in the beautiful Patagonia region of Argentina. Rio Manso is only 90-minutes South West of the city of San Carlos de Bariloche. Despite being close to Bariloche, the Manso River gets little fishing pressure due to its inaccessibility.

Rio Manso guests can expect good fishing for wild rainbow, brown and brook trout in the un-pressured and diverse water that surrounds the lodge. The remarkable quality and size of the trout is a result of the low pressure, conservation efforts, and Rio Manso Lodge’s strict catch-and-release policy.

    The Fishing

The Manso River runs for 20 miles around the lodge from its origin at Moscos Lake (20 minutes up-river) and contains a variety of water. Rio Manso Lodge’s experienced guides all speak English. A typical week of fishing at Rio Manso includes fishing from a drift boat, wading the Manso River, floating sections of the Manso or the Quieto, and excellent sight fishing on Lago Hess, Lago Fonk and Lago Roca from the skiff or raft, casting big dries or streams to the banks, as well as a few places where anglers can get out the boat and fish from shore. This variety of water allows fly fisherman the opportunity to fish streamers, nymphs, and dries.

    Seasonal Patterns

The fishing season in Argentina runs from early November until the end of April. November – December typically have higher water, with the dry-fly fishing increasing in productivity in December. By the middle of December, the dragonflies are hatching in the rivers and lakes and the big fish that come out to eat makes December – January an exciting time for fishing dries at Rio Manso.

The summer season (January – February) sees the mayflies and caddis hatches wane, but the terrestrials (grasshoppers, ants, and inchworms) become an important staple in the trout’s diet. In March and April, the water temperatures begin to cool and the fish become more active. Most fishing is done with streamers or large attractor dry flies (big rubber legged dries work well in the lakes) with a brief flurry of dry fly activity right before dark. April is also when the big browns become aggressive, as they get ready to spawn.

    Accommodations

Rio Manso can accommodate 8 anglers in spacious, comfortable rooms, each with private bathroom and some rooms have Jacuzzi tubs. All the rooms at Rio Manso face northwest, overlooking the Manso River, Lake Hess, and enjoy a spectacular view of Mount Tronador on the Argentina – Chile border towering over the Andes. The rest of the lodge is comprised of a warm common area with beautiful wooden posts and beams and a river stone fireplace, where you can enjoy a welcoming fire after fishing, a fly-tying bench, wader room by the Lodge’s entrance, a bar, and a main dining area. Rio Manso also has a sauna and a massage room for guests who want to relax.

Since anglers usually end their fishing day between 7:00 – 8:00 PM, hour d’oevres are served in front of the fireplace before dinner, typically between 9:00 – 10:00 PM. Rio Manso’s international menu is accented by local dishes and homemade delicacies, which are enhanced by the lodge’s own garden and excellent collection of fine Argentine wines. There is also a weekly “asado” or traditional Argentine barbeque.

    Non-Angler Activities

Rio Manso Lodge primarily caters to fly fishers, however, there are a variety of activities for the non-angler, such as guided hiking and/or bird watching through the virgin areas surrounding the lodge, climbing to the nearby mounts, and horseback riding.

    Kau Tapen Lodge

    Updated on

The Rio Grande in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina is without question the finest sea-run brown trout river in the world. The first and most famous lodge on the river is the legendary Kau Tapen. Kau Tapen first opened in1985 and remains at the foremost of the world’s best fishing lodges, boasting not only a private tract of 16 km of some of the most productive water on the Rio Grande, but provides the ultimate luxury fishing lodge experience. It is little wonder Kau Tapen enjoys a loyal and almost fanatical clientele.

    Fishing at Kau Tapen

The giant sea-run brown trout is the rarest and most prized of anadromous fish, and there is no other river in the world capable of producing seatrout of the size and numbers found in the Rio Grande. Unlike other anadromous species, sea-run brown trout don’t ascend the river in one or two large runs, but tend to migrate in small schools from November through April so the fishing is productive throughout the season. The river has been managed as a catch and release fishery for a number of years, resulting in a remarkable increase in size of the fish. The average Rio Grande brown is now around 12-pounds and 20-pounders, once considered exceptional fish, have become almost routine. The 30-pound mark has become the new benchmark, and a number of trout eclipsing this mark have been released in recent years. These are big brown trout!

The river is fly fishing only and techniques employed are similar to those used in steelheading and Atlantic salmon fishing. Subsurface presentations with sink tip lines are generally more effective in the cooler water temperatures of early and late season, while floating lines and smaller flies (even dry or skated flies) are effective in warmer midseason water temperatures.

As with all salmonids, fishing is concentrated on the more productive low light time periods early and late in the day. The Rio Grande is a serpentine with many meanders creating numerous undercut banks, which are favored lies for these migratory brown trout. It is a relatively small river providing very easy wading. While double-handed fly rods have been increasingly popular in recent years, most pools can be easily covered with a single hander.

Weather and conditions at sea can affect fishing productivity and as with any other river, several days of hard rain could make the river unfishable, but the Rio Grande clears very quickly, usually overnight.

    Kau Tapen’s Accommodations

Kau Tapen’s guests enjoy spacious and tastefully appointed guest rooms, an experienced and attentive staff, and superb cuisine complimented by fine Argentine wines that will delight the most discriminating palette. Kau Tapen has eight comfortable bedrooms, each with private bathroom, and is limited to twelve anglers per week. Upgrades to single accommodations may be requested (subject to availability). During “off” hours and between fishing sessions, guests congregate in the attractive living area, where cocktails are served, and stories of productive flies and angling successes are exchanged in comfort near a central fireplace. Other amenities include massage, sauna and a steam room and drying rooms for wet gear. The dining schedule revolves around the most productive fishing hours and fine meals are served, exemplifying the hospitality of gracious Argentine hosts.

    Kau Tapen’s Location

Built by its owners, the Carreras family, the lodge and its adjacent 25 kilometers of the Rio Grande and Rio Menendez is situated about 90 minutes by car west of Rio Grande City on the right (southern) bank on the enormous working ranch, Estancia La Retranca. The lodge itself is located within minutes of the best pools on the Rio Grande. Estancia La Retranca neighbors the huge holdings of Estancia Jose Menendez and Estancia Maria Behety, which are on the lower river. These are stretches where Joe Brooks and notable Argentine anglers first explored this fishing over forty years ago.

Kau Tapen was not only the first fishing lodge on the Rio Grande but also in Tierra del Fuego and remains the southern most fishing lodge in the world. Brothers Fernando and Jorge de las Carreras, direct descendants of Jose Menendez, later went on to build Villa Maria lodge downstream on Estancia Jose Menedez and Toon Ken Lodge upstream on Estancia San Julio. They later formed the company Nervous Waters that now owns a total of 8 lodges in Argentina, Chile and the Bahamas. Nervous Waters’ fishing lodges have become synonymous with the ultimate in luxury and attention to detail.

    Water Cay Bonefish Lodge

    Updated on

Water Cay Bonefish Lodge is ideally located just east of the Horn off Grand Bahamas North Shore. The lodge is situated on the southern shore of Water Cay, a small island 3-miles north of mainland Grand Bahama. Water Cay is a remote island with only 3-full time residents and despite the glow of Freeport (the second largest city in the Bahamas), the experience at Water Cay is similar to the more remote out-island lodges in the Bahamas.

This north central habitat is rarely visited because the other lodges on Grand Bahama (all located on the southern shore) do not need to travel to Water Cay to find good fishing of their own. As a result, there are very few boats fishing these waters near Water Cay and by taking only 6 anglers at any one time, Water Cay Bonefish Lodge ensures that the north shore’s vast bonefish habitat remains virtually untouched.

Untouched Bonefish Habitat on Grand Bahama’s North Shore

Many anglers opt for more “remote” areas, like Andros or Abaco, believing Freeport is too developed. But as the second largest island in the Bahamas chain, there is more to Grand Bahama than the hustle and bustle of Freeport, and the North Shore offers countless miles of wilderness bonefish flats. In many ways, the fishery is similar to the Marls of Abaco or the west side of Andros, with deep cuts, perfect flats and rocky bottomed bays that allow for a fair mix of fishing from the skiff and wading.

It is not unusual to spend a few hours poling an area (while casting to many schools of fish) and then pop out around a corner and see the lodge! The complexity of the bays, creeks and flats that surround the lodge can be quite deceiving.

The winter months are the times for big fish, but as the water temps stabilize in late March, the school fish show up in massive numbers and the big trophy fish mix with the schools. This integration lasts until late fall when the big fish once again go out on their own as they are able to better tolerate the cooler water temps. For the angler, this means Water Cay has it all, both big fish and school-sized fish. Permit show up consistently near the northern cays as soon as the winter winds calm and the water temps climb.

Master Guide Sidney Thomas and Team

Water Cay Bonefish Lodge’s fishing program is run by master Bahamian guide Sidney Thomas. Sidney has a tremendous bonefish pedigree. At 44 years of age, he has worked for all the best lodges on Grand Bahama either as their head guide or as a key bonefish guide. Devoted and hard working, Sidney is the “real deal” when it comes to guiding.

Sydney and his team of guides (Ezra Thomas and Greg Rolle) have adapted a unique style of catching big bonefish: “Bonefish got to eat. And to eat, bonefish got to get up onto their flats and find food. It’s nice to see those big tails waving in the sunlight on the incoming water. We see them and we fish ’em directly. What I mean is that I like to have my guys go straight for the fish. No leading or putting that fly where you think them fish are gonna be. Just try to hit them on the head. The fish at Water Cay haven’t seen many flies and so when they are hungry, they ain’t shy. You might think that your cast spooked them because they take flight twenty or thirty feet. But more times than not, the fish spin in a circle looking for what made the fuss. If they think it’s a ‘cuda or shark or maybe a bird, they’ll keep moving. But if the coast is clear, those big fish will come right back to the spot. If you are there, then they are gonna eat every time. We hook a bunch of BIG bonefish this way.”

    Lodge Accommodations

The lodge building consists of a common area, 3-guest rooms and 6-staff rooms. The common area contains the kitchen, dining area, lounge, bar, and fly tying area. The 3-guest rooms are located to the left of the common area, and each air-conditioned room contains two twin beds, full bathroom and shower, a closet, a chest of drawer and a ceiling fan. The rooms are decorated in traditional Bahamian colors and native décor.

All the water for the lodge is produced and filtered by an extensive reverse osmosis system allowing guests to have purified water right from their bathroom taps. The lodge also has small deck in front of the lodge, a guest favorite for swapping fishing stories and sipping a cold Kalik as the sun sets over Bahaman flats.

    Fleet and Equipment

The guides at Water Cay Bonefish Lodge use 18′ Beavertail Bonefish skiffs with 40-hp Evinrude E-tec engines on jack plates. Each boat has steering console, two seats for anglers in front of this console, automatic trim & tilt engines. A cooler for lunches and cold drinks doubles as a seat for the guide behind the console. All boats are double hulled, self-bailing and each has a cell phone and a VHF radio for communication with the lodge and with one another at all times. Each boat is also equipped with 2 spinning rods for anglers to use if they choose. One rod is a med-action rod for bonefish and the other is a med-heavy action rod for barracuda or permit.

    Aurelia Lodge

    Updated on

Aurelia Lodge, Estancia Rosita and Estancia Aurelia are situated on the southern bank of the Rio Grande, and occupy the large triangular tract of land between the Rio Grande and its tributary, the Rio Menendez. For years, the owner, Ricardo Hermoso, was occupied with other businesses, not the least of which was running these two working ranches, and found it more expedient to lease most of the Rio Grande water to another outfitter, and operate the fishing on a part time basis, primarily on his 15 miles of the Rio Menendez.

However, when the lease ran up in 2006, Senor Hermoso decided to hire a fishing manager, refurbish the lodge, and run a full time fishing program for the duration of the sea-run trout season.

Senor Hermoso recruited a Rio Grande native, Peter Pereira Mullins to run the operation. Peter, who has fly fished the Rio Grande all his life, holds a degree in Tourism and Hotel Management, had also guided at Despedida Lodge for 7 seasons. Peter recruited a staff of experienced and enthusiastic guides and has personally trained them all.

The Rio Menendez is a smaller river, with more intimate water and is a bit more technical. Wading the Rio Menendez requires a stealthier approach and frequently smaller flies, and presents a challenge that appeals to many experienced anglers.

Sea-run brown trout catch at Aurelia Lodge, Rio Grande, Tierra del Fuego

While “bigger water” than Menendez, the Rio Grande is really a medium size river, with gentle gradients and easily waded, gravel-bottom pools. While the pools can be covered adequately with a single-handed rod, double-handers have become popular and deal with the famous Tierra del Fuego winds more efficiently. Aurelia Lodge’s pools are varied and interesting with island pools, traditional runs, undercut banks and meanders. All the pools are ideal fly water.

All told, Aurelia Lodge offers 8 miles of double bank fishing on the Rio Grande and 15 miles of double bank fishing on the Rio Menendez.

The lodge is approximately 83 kilometers from the airport at Rio Grande City. The main lodge is set back several miles from the Rio Grande. Aurelia Lodge blends the traditional estancia styles with more modern. For example, dinner may be served in a modern and elegant formal dining room one evening, and the following, a traditional gaucho “asado” served in the “Quincho” dining room.

The fishing day is divided into two 4-hour fishing sessions to take advantage of the most productive, low-light periods of the day. Anglers depart Aurelia each morning at 8:00 am for the river and their assigned beat. Each two anglers will have their own guide and 4 WD vehicle equipped with exterior rod holders. You can drive right up to most of the pools so very little walking is required.

Those fishing the Rio Grande will meet at the comfortable fishing hut overlooking the river, for a sumptuous midday meal followed by the traditional siesta. Anglers on the Menendez return to the main lodge for lunch and siesta. You head back out in late afternoon and fish until dark. Then all will return to Aurelia’s main lodge for a gourmet dinner featuring a selection of exquisite Argentinean wines.

    Crooked Island Lodge

    Updated on

Crooked Island Lodge has a lot of fishable water close by and it isn’t all just bonefish! There are extensive systems of interior creek and lagoon areas that have big bonefish, an assortment of snapper, barracuda and small grouper, some permit and the occasional small to medium sized tarpon – all catchable on a fly rod or spinning gear.

Towards the outer edges of the islands, out in the Bight, it’s entirely different fishing: poling or wading crystal-clear sand flats, which hold thousands of school-size (2-4 pound) bones. Along the edges of the mangroves on a high tide you’ll again find larger single and double bonefish nosing through the roots and marl.

Species: Bonefish (2-4 lbs, some larger), snapper (mutton, mangrove, yellowtail), barracuda, permit, tarpon, grouper, wahoo, blue and white marlin, tuna, mahi-mahi, jacks, sharks

    Flats Fishing

The beach in front of the lodge offers excellent fishing opportunities for jacks, small permit, grouper, snapper and such with the fly rod. If you’re willing to use a spinning rod or can cast a needlefish fly a considerable distance, you can also catch barracuda up to 5 feet long, either casting from the skiff, trolling behind the skiff or fishing from shore.

The fishing can be fantastic for bonefish that haven’t seen enough pressure to become spooky yet, averaging 2-4 pounds, with some much larger fish on certain flats, tailing or cruising alone or in pairs. Besides bonefish, there are lots of snapper (mutton, mangrove, yellowtail), jacks, some big permit, a few tarpon, ocean triggerfish and tons of barracuda. Photographers will want to catch a bonefish within view of some of the thousands of Flamingos that inhabit this part of the Bahamas.

    Offshore Fishing

If you like the big fish – the offshore stuff – the lodge operates a completely equipped boat. Offshore fishing with Captain Robbie Gibson is incredible. The lodge is fishing water that no other sport fishing boats are touching. Daily catches may exceed thirty fish and are not uncommon. Fall & Winter are excellent for wahoo and mackerel and some tuna. Spring & winter are excellent for tuna, dolphin (mahi mahi), and marlin. Wahoo and mackerel are also good.

At the hotel, there is a picture of this fellow holding a wahoo that scaled reliably at 148 pounds. That’s a damn big wahoo. Billfish, tuna, dorado and other offshore species abound (seasonally) just a mile or less from shore or you can arrange longer excursions to productive offshore fishing spots for the day or a sleep over trip to the renowned Diana Banks.

For fly-casters looking for deep water fish, the lodge has been experimenting successfully with live baiting big jack crevale, horseyed jacks, amberjacks, mutton snapper, dorado and tuna. Live baiting involves releasing live pilchards to attract schooling fish to the boat and then casting flies. Bring your 10-12 weight rods and big deceiver patterns if you’d like to try this (subject to availability of the big boat and access to the live bait).

    Reef Fishing

Light tackle or inshore fishing is very popular and highly productive with all our guests. Fishing in about 100 ft. of water produces nice catches of grouper, snapper, hard fighting jacks, mackerel, sharks, and cudas. Guests are invited to bring their catch back to the hotel, where the experienced and skilled Crooked Island Lodge chef will prepare your catch for dinner at the Sunset Bar & Grill. Chumming, jigging and live bait techniques are used for inshore fishing. Excellent catches are available all year long. Because of the low population density (the total population of Acklins/Crooked Islands is less than 1,000), the reefs have barely been touched.

    The Lodge

The setting is lovely – a very dramatic bit of coastline with beautiful beaches and shells, great reef fishing 10 yards from shore and a 30-minute run to the flats. The hotel itself is informal, not luxurious, but modern and comfy, quiet, small and nicely tree-shaded. There are 12 rooms in 3 villas, a separate dining area, a beach cabana where dinners and lunches are sometimes served, a bar and a private airfield. The nearest village is about a mile away. The Crooked Islanders are wonderful, dignified people with big smiles; quiet, polite, religious and good-humored.

Crooked Island Lodge offers eight air-conditioned hotel rooms, each featuring two double beds, a private bath, sitting area, microwave, coffee maker, and mini-fridge. These rooms provide spectacular sunset views. Six private cottages are also available, equipped with two double beds, a private bath, seating and dining area, and a kitchenette that includes a refrigerator/freezer, microwave, and coffee maker. Private patios overlook the marina.

    Dining & Activities

The Sunset Bar & Grill, located steps from the main lodge, offers incredible views of Bird Rock Lighthouse and is named for the magnificent sunsets enjoyed almost nightly. The restaurant serves fresh, locally caught seafood such as grouper, snapper, tuna, mahi-mahi, lobster, and conch, prepared in traditional Bahamian recipes. Breakfast includes fresh coffee, juices, fruit, pastries, breakfast meats, and eggs cooked to order. Lunch options are available for individuals and groups, with “cooler lunches” prepared for those fishing or exploring. Dinner features hearty portions of locally influenced dishes, accompanied by homemade breads and desserts. Special dietary requests can be accommodated with advance notice.

The lodge overlooks Bird Rock Lighthouse, surrounded by an extensive reef system. Guests can snorkel steps away from their rooms or experience unique “wall diving” just off the beach. Sea kayak tours of the coast and visits to the historic lighthouse are available. Self-guided snorkeling is also an option.

The lodge features a 35-slip marina accommodating vessels up to 160 feet, with amenities such as high-quality RO water, full electrical hookups, and fuel services available daily.

    Getting There

Crooked Island is located in the southern Bahamas, a 1 hour and 15 minute flight south of Nassau. Bahamas Air services the island from Nassau twice per week (Wednesdays and Saturdays), landing at Colonel Hill Airport, a 4,000′ airstrip on the southwest portion of the island, approximately a 30-minute drive to Crooked Island Lodge. For a more convenient travel option, charter flights can also be arranged. Crooked Island Lodge has a 3,500′ private airstrip which makes it ideal for private planes as well as charter flights.

  • Abaco Lodge

    Abaco Lodge

    Updated on

The “Marls of Abaco” is a vast expanse of prime, wilderness bonefish habitat, situated along the western shore of Great Abaco Island in the Bahamas. This little fished area spans some 300 square miles: 30 miles north – south and about 10 miles off the west coast of Abaco. The Marls have long been known by well-traveled bonefishermen as one of the most unique and productive fisheries in the Bahamas.

Abaco Island is one of the larger and more developed Islands in the 700 mile long Bahamian chain, but its development is principally along the eastern shore with white sand beaches and easy access to deep water. Much of the land mass along the western shore drops off to swampy wetlands, referred to as “The Marls”. Comprised of hundreds of square miles of mangroves, creeks, cuts and flats, navigable only by shallow draft flats skiffs, the Marls remain an undeveloped wilderness and ideal bonefish habitat.

The greatest advantage of Abaco Lodge is its location, literally on the flats. Anglers walk a short distance from their rooms to the dock, hop in a skiff, and can be fishing prime flats within 5 – 10 minutes.

    The Fishing

Unlike some of the less developed islands in the Bahamas, Abaco has the third largest airport in the Bahamas (Marsh Harbour). Good numbers of direct flights from the U.S. makes traveling relatively easy and the lodge is an easy 15-minute drive from the airport.

Another attractive feature is that Abaco Lodge provides single rooms for the majority of their guests at no additional cost. Each room is spacious and well appointed with a private bath. The lodge has 7 rooms to accommodate 8 anglers per week. There are 6 single rooms set up for single occupancy and 1 room set up for double occupancy. The single occupancy rooms are available on a first come first serve basis.

The lodge owns a fleet of state of the art Hells Bay Flats Skiffs that get you to the fish quickly and efficiently. They are also stealthy boats and navigate the shallow waters of the Marls beautifully. Experienced guides are not in short supply on Abaco and Abaco Lodge has developed loyalty from some of the best on the island.

There is one additional ingredient that contributes greatly to the success of Abaco Lodge … management. Nervous Waters has always taken pride in finding the right managers for each of their destinations. Marsh Harbour has a good supply chain, so if anything is needed, it’s generally there by the end of the day.

Despite all these other accolades, it is the fishing that really sets Abaco Lodge apart. The marls offers some of the most productive bonefishing in the Bahamas for 2 – 7 pound bonefish. The lodge compliments its “home” waters (the marls) with trailering options on the east side of Abaco, where the fish are larger and the wading more prevalent. With drives of 15 – 40 minutes guests can be fishing the east side of Abaco from Cherokee Sound to Treasure Cay. Here anglers will find 5 – 10 pound bonefish in good numbers, whether fishing from a skiff or wading hard sand flats a couple of hours either side of low tide.

    Bonefishing action at Abaco Lodge

The bonefish move into the Marls on the rising tide looking for food, and the drill is to follow them in, and when the tide starts to drop, follow them back out. Some of these interior flats are wadable, but as the term “marl” implies, many of the interior flats are too soft for comfortable wading, so are fished from the skiff. The outer edges of the Marls are typically firm, and the guides may target tailing fish on these wadable flats during the lower stages of the tide. From time to time, tarpon may be encountered on some of the deeper flats.

Abaco Lodge has been best publicized by an ESPN series entitled, Pirates of the Flats, which first aired in January 2010. Angler celebrities Lefty Kreh, Yvon Chouinard, Michael Keaton, Tom Brokaw, Thomas McGuane and Bill Kline were invited to Abaco Lodge to film the series and ESPN captured on film the beauty and productivity of this unique fishery. Viewers may recall many scenes with these celebrities seated at the outdoor dining area or sitting around the fire pit at night, recounting the events of the day. NOTICE: Abaco Lodge reopened in April 2023 after sustaining severe damage during Hurricane Dorian in September 2019. We’re excited to have this wonderful property back in operation after more than 3 years! We’ll continue to update this page as we continue to get great reports.

Much of the land mass along the western shore drops off to swampy wetlands, referred to as the “The Marls”. Comprised of hundreds of square miles of mangroves, creeks, cuts and flats, navigable only by shallow draft flats skiffs, the Marls remain an undeveloped wilderness and ideal Bonefish habitat.

Unlike some of the less developed islands in the Bahamas, Abaco has the third largest airport in the Bahamas (Marsh Harbour). Good numbers of direct flights from the U.S. makes traveling relatively easy and the lodge is an easy 15-minute drive from the airport.

The greatest advantage of Abaco Lodge is its location, literally on the flats. Anglers walk a short distance from their rooms to the dock, hop in a skiff, and can be fishing prime flats within 5 – 10 minutes.

Another attractive feature is that Abaco Lodge provides single rooms for the majority of their guests at no additional cost. Each room is spacious and well appointed with a private bath.

The lodge has 7 rooms to accommodate 8 anglers per week. There are 6 single rooms set up for single occupancy and 1 rooms set up for double occupancy.

These images solidified what those in the industry already knew. Abaco Lodge is an alluring location to immerse yourself in the sport of bonefishing with a fly.

    Alaska West Sportfishing

    Alaska West Sportfishing

    Updated on

Alaska West stands out as one of Alaska’s premier camps, and in a state that abounds with world class fishing camps, that’s saying a lot. The camp sits on the Kanektok River which runs 110 miles from Kagati Lake to the Bering Sea. One of the Kanektok’s true strengths as a fishery is its relatively small size. This is a very “wader friendly” river, and perhaps one Alaska’s best to target king salmon on a fly rod. Many larger rivers require a boat and very heavy gear to target kings. Flyfishing from bank, beach or gravel bar for huge king salmon is a world-class fishing experience that few other lodges can offer.

This is a true wilderness experience, yet the Alaska West camp provides a remarkable level of comfort, with heated tents, hot showers, and hearty meals served in a dedicated dining tent. It’s the perfect basecamp for targeting all five species of Pacific salmon, along with a host of resident species, in a remote and wild setting.

Species: King, Coho, Sockeye, Pink & Chum Salmon, Leopard Rainbow Trout, Dolly Varden, Grayling

    Season: June through August

    The Kanektok River Fishery

The Kanektok is a premier Alaskan fishing destination for a reason. Its unique character, size, and consistent runs of fish make it one of the most productive and diverse rivers in the state. Anglers can fish effectively from the boat or by wading, and the river’s structure offers endless opportunities for all techniques.

All five Pacific Salmon species – including king, pink, chum, silver, and sockeye – surge past the Alaska West campsight every summer in huge numbers. Since the camp is less than four miles from the river mouth, these fish are fresh from the sea, bright, well-fed, and tireless fighters. To be sure, many will be very thankful that the camp loans out tackle to replace broken rods; these fish won’t come in easily. Fishermen are taken out in pairs with a guide on an 18 foot, jet-powered skiff each morning. The angler should not be surprised at landing over twenty fish in a day and will get used to having sore arms at dinnertime.

The “Alaska West” Camp & Experience

Forget everything you think you know about “tent camps.” Alaska West redefines wilderness comfort. Guests stay in heated, carpeted, and well-lit double-occupancy tents that stand up to any weather. A separate, dedicated shower building provides on-demand hot water, and a drying tent ensures your gear is ready for the next day’s adventure.

The heart of the camp is the large dining tent, where guests gather for hearty, family-style meals prepared by a professional chef. It’s the perfect place to share stories, tie flies, and relax after a long day on the water. The camp’s location provides easy access to all sections of the river, minimizing travel time and maximizing fishing time.

A Typical Day & The Fishing Program

Fishing starts as soon as the boat lands and even the weariest of the maximum eighteen guests will spring for his rod. From this moment on, fishing ceases only briefly for eating and sleeping. Anglers rise early to gobble a quick breakfast, pack a lunch, and pass through the heated wader tent. The first fish are hooked before 8:00am. The rest of the day is spent in pairs, exploring miles of pristine water on small skiffs with jet-powered outboards and one shared guide. These guides have to be truly committed to work in such an isolated spot and are happiest when they are able to show the guest exactly how much the Kanektok has to offer, including a streamside lunch of your freshly caught fish. All flies and leaders are provided to guests at no charge.

Boats arrive back in camp around 6:00pm with just enough time for fishermen to freshen up in the heated showers and commune in the dining tent. After dinner the true enthusiast has hours of daylight left to work the river on foot. When at last his arm is exhausted, the angler will return to his heated tent with wooden floor, and screened front door. Inside there are two cots with full bedding, a space heater, lamp, plenty of room for standing and for hanging damp equipment, and, thankfully, a mosquito coil. These are simple accommodations but few wakeful hours will be spent within them. The most enthusiastic angler will be put to sleep soundly by these Kanektok salmon.

    World-Class Multi-Species Fishing

The Kanektok is a fish-producing factory. The season kicks off with the mighty King Salmon (Chinook), the largest and most powerful of the salmon, running from mid-June to mid-July. As the kings taper off, the river fills with Chum (“Tiger”), Sockeye, and Pink Salmon, creating a target-rich environment for anglers.

From late July through the end of the season, the Silver Salmon (Coho) arrive. These acrobatic and aggressive fish are a favorite on the fly, known for explosive takes and cartwheeling fights. Throughout it all, the river’s resident populations of beautifully spotted “Leopard” Rainbow Trout, Dolly Varden, and Grayling are there to be caught, growing fat on the eggs and flesh from the salmon spawn.

    Getting There

The Alaska West Camp is not easy to access. Plan on at least a day and a half of travel to get there. Even from Anchorage, two more single-prop flights, connecting in Bethel, must be taken before arriving at the mouth of the Kanektok. The last leg of the trip is over water, motoring up river to the campsite several miles inland.

This is wilderness fishing at its best; tracking across such a formidable expanse is all part of the experience. Keep in mind that Alaska West owes its abundance of salmon to its location on the extreme outskirts of civilization. Upstream from the camp are miles of flat, uninhabitable scrub, punctuated by thousands of glacial ponds. Dense, weathered thicket extends downstream and dissolves into the Bering Sea.

    More Info

The Salmon Lodge has been welcoming Atlantic salmon fishing enthusiasts to the world-famous Grand Cascapedia Valley for over a century. Perched high on an 80-foot bluff overlooking the majestic Grand Cascapedia River, The Salmon Lodge was built in the late 1800’s. This historic lodge has been painstakingly maintained and from the moment anglers arrive there’s a special feeling that they’ve been swept back in time to an era of Atlantic salmon fishing in the “Grand Old Style”.

Ideally located in the heart of Quebec’s famous Gaspé Peninsula, The Salmon Lodge is located on the doorstep of the finest and most renowned Atlantic salmon rivers in the province and affords angler the opportunity to fish not one, but three of Quebec’s finest salmon rivers. The Grand Cascapedia River is world renowned for producing the largest Atlantic salmon in the province, and indeed some of the largest salmon in the world. More Atlantic salmon over the magical 40-pound mark have come from the Grand than any other river in North America. The Petite Cascapedia is an absolute jewel providing miles of some of the most beautiful and productive salmon and brook trout water anywhere. Big salmon in the 30 to 40 pound class are a possibility here as well sea-run brookies that can sometimes exceed 10 pounds. And last but not least, the Bonaventure, regarded as the clearest of the clear, offers anglers an unique opportunity to sight cast to huge salmon on miles of pristine river.

The fishing at The Salmon Lodge is either done wading from in the Gaspé style, from traditional 26-foot river canoes. Early in the season the Atlantic salmon fishing is a combination of both while later in the season many pools are best fished wading. The Salmon Lodge has excellent late season Atlantic salmon fishing (August and September) since the mountain streams and spring-fed brooks supply The Grand Casacapedia, The Petite Cascapedia, and the Bonaventure with cold water throughout the entire summer, keeping each them cool and clear.

The Salmon Lodge can accommodate up to eight fishing guests and four non-fishing guests in complete comfort. Well-appointed and comfortable bedrooms, an inviting living room and spacious dining room, both with their original fireplaces, create a relaxing and cozy atmosphere. A highlight of staying at Salmon Lodge is the spectacular

view from our deck and cigar-friendly screened porch, where a century’s worth of fishing tales have been told.

The Salmon Lodge also has a rod room, located in a separate building, which is the ideal place to keep fishing equipment during a visit. The rod room is where guests meet their guide in the morning before a day of salmon fishing. The features of the rod room include individual storage areas for each guest, a large rod rack, and there’s always fresh coffee in the morning and cool drinks at the end of the day.

Each day the resident chef prepares a different menu to tempt guest’s pallets. Homemade breads and jams along with all morning favorites will have guests ready for a day of salmon fishing. Anglers are welcometo return to the lodge to enjoy a wonderful lunch or take their midday meal picnic style on the river. Evening meals at the lodge begin with hors d’oeuvres served in front of a blazing fire or on the deck overlooking the Grand Cascapedia. These mouth-watering meals are served in the dining room begin with fresh salads, soups and appetizers, main courses include fresh lobster, local seafood and sizzling steaks off the grill, just to mention a few. The Salmon Lodge is happy to accommodate any dietary restrictions or requirements. Wine is included with lunch and diner, personal alcohol is not included, however, guests are welcome to bring their own. At the bar area The Salmon Lodge supplies all ice, mixes and necessary ingredients for the perfect drink. The lodge is also a short distance from a very well stocked liquor store.

Guests are fully guided by a team of experienced and professional guides, committed to the sport of fly-fishing for Atlantic salmon. All are qualified instructors; they teach the fundamentals to beginners or work with seasoned anglers to perfect their abilities. Most importantly, perhaps, is the friendship you’ll develop with these great guys.

All The Salmon Lodge guides are equipped with digital cameras and will be taking photos each day on the river to document your trip. A short while after returning home you will receive a CD with all the photos of your trip.

The Club on Bonaventure History & Overview

The Club was incorporated and constructed in the late 20’s by a group of prominent Canadians and operated as a private camp, the Canadian Salmon Club until 2017.  That year, the owners of the two iconic Gaspé salmon camps, Camp Bonaventure and the Salmon Lodge purchased the Club and invested a half a million dollars restoring this historic camp, updating and modernizing while preserving the charm and essence of a classic 100 year old salmon camp.   The moniker, The Club was kept but for the first time in its history, the camp is now open to the public.

The Club is situated on 100 acres of riverfront property and retains freehold ownership of their original water, about 3.5 miles of river with 14 major pools.  This sector is known as B3, and along with the adjacent B4 sector is considered the very best water on the entire river.  And to provide guests access to more water, in 2019 the Club entered an agreement with the ZEC to rotate these two premier sectors.  The Club’s 6-anglers now fish Sector B3 Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays and Sector B4 Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays giving guests exclusive access to over 7-miles and 26 major pools.

The Club accommodates a maximum of 6 anglers accommodated in single rooms.   Each bedroom is elegantly appointed with a king size bed, fireplace, AC and ceiling fan, full private bath with walk in shower and a screened porch.   A covered walkway connects the guest quarters with the Common areas which include: the screen porch overlooking the river; The Great Room with fireplace and overstuffed leather chairs and sofa; and the dining room with adjacent sitting area and fireplace which also overlooks the river.

Fishing the B3 & B4 Sectors at The Club on the Bonaventure

The Club is situated on Sector B3 (Google Earth coordinates 48°11’19.3″N 65°33’41.6″W) about 25 river miles up from the Baie de Chaleur, just below Gallagher (52) and overlooking Burnt Camp (51) and Kelly (50).  All told, they have exclusive access to over 7 miles of river from Baker (68) at the top of B4 to Deep Water Ledge (42) at the bottom of B3.  The Club rotates these sectors with the ZEC and fishes 3 canoes on B3 Monday, Wednesday & Friday and B4 Tuesday, Thursday & Saturday, giving guests exclusive access to 26 pools which include many of the best holding pools on the river.

Fishing days are divided into 2 sessions, mornings from approximately 7:30 am – 11:30 am and evening 4:00 pm until dusk to take advantage of the most productive hours.  Guests rotate beats each fishing session so you’ll likely fish new water each and every fishing session.  Weeks run Sunday to Sunday with no fishing on the Sunday turnover day.

atlantic salmon on the Bonaventure River, Quebec

The Bonaventure is renowned as one of the clearest salmon rivers in the world.  As such, it is the dry fly fisherman’s dream river!  The salmon to grilse ratio can vary year to year but is usually around 4-to-1 or better.  Typical Bonnie salmon range in the mid-teens to mid-20s but 30 plus pounders are taken each year (Deep Water Ledge on B3 has produced a number of 40+ pound fish).

The Club’s guides, Jacques Bernard, Michel Bernard and Pascal St-Onge are consummate professionals with over 50 years’ experience on the river between them.  They know every rock in the river and work hard to put their clients onto fish.   Fishing is either from stable 26 foot Sharpe canoes or by wading.

  • Tarpon Caye Lodge

    Tarpon Caye Lodge

Southern Belize, and particularly Placencia, has long been known as one of the top hotspots in the world for the elusive permit. While found in good numbers close to the mainland, the real action is found on the ocean flats located about 14 miles offshore near the barrier reef, an area known to cognoscenti as “Permit Alley”. These skinny water, white sand wading flats are gin-clear ocean water and offer what many consider the ultimate angling experience, stalking tailing permit on foot! When fishing the top 6 hours of the tide, it is not unusual for anglers to get 20, 30 or more legitimate shots at tailing permit.

Crossing the open ocean between the mainland and permit alley is a weather dependent affair in a small flats skiff. But fortunately for permit lovers, Tarpon Caye Lodge, owned and operated by world-renowned permit guide and guru, Charlie Leslie, is located smack dab in the center of this permit haven. A sea-worthy canopied 28-foot launch insures a comfortable ride out to the Caye. But permit aren’t the only game in town. For those who like diversity, there are plenty of tarpon (hence the name, Tarpon Caye), bonefish and other species to keep you occupied.

What distinguishes Tarpon Caye Lodge from other lodges is the flexibility of the daily fishing schedule. Charlie’s motto is, “we do fishing here!” Most other lodges operate on a set daily schedule, such as 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, irrespective of the tides. The permit fishing in the Alley, is extremely tide dependent. They are up on the flats feeding on the top 6-hours of the tide. If you had low tide at 12:00 noon and fished a conventional 8:00 am to 4:00 pm lodge schedule, you’d likely not see many permit between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm. However, at Tarpon Caye, if your preference is to concentrate on permit, with a tide like this, you’ll have toast and coffee at 4:00 am, and be out on the flats at daybreak to catch the last few good hours of outgoing tide. Then return to the lodge for a full breakfast and siesta, snorkeling, or use the lodge’s sea kayaks to paddle down 5 minutes to the flats on the south side of the Caye to fish on your own. Then you’ll had back out with your guide in mid-afternoon to catch the best part of the incoming and top of the tide. Fishing such a schedule practically guarantees permit anglers will have shots at fish during every hour of their fishing day!

The tarpon lagoon for which the Caye takes it’s name, is a few pole pushes from the dock, and is usually chock full of resident tarpon in the 20 – 50 pound class. From April through November, migratory ‘poons in the 50 – 100 + pound range may be encountered both in the lagoon and on a number of the deeper flats in the area. Bonefish are not only plentiful on many of the flats, but these ocean fish tend to be much larger average size than the mainland fish. All the flats are from 3 – 20 minutes run time from the dock. This may be the only destination on earth where you have a shot at a Grand Slam without traveling more than a mile from the lodge!

But flyfishing or spinfishing for the “Big Three” is just the tip of the iceberg. Opportunities for bottom fishing, conventional trolling and offshore casting and flyfishing are nearly limitless. The cut through the Barrier Reef is just 7-miles from the Caye, and the drop off just beyond can produce sailfish and blue marlin during the spring months, and what Charlie refers to as “Little Big Game Fishing” for, Dorado, wahoo, kings, amberjack, barracuda and more. The channels within minutes of the Caye also produce king mackerel, Spanish macks, wahoo, Dorado, bonito (little tunny), blackfin tuna and more. Bottom fishing yields over 7-species of groupers, 5-species of snappers, jack crevalle, bar jack, triggerfish and more. Regardless of your species or method of preference, Tarpon Caye guides are both well equipped and well schooled in catching just about anything that swims in these waters!

Accommodations at Tarpon Caye are in 3 simple but comfortable double occupancy cabañas on stilts overlooking the Home Flat to the east. Each cabaña is furnished with 2 double sized platform beds with comfortable new mattresses and head board reading lights, writing table and chair, tiled floors, cathedral ceilings to help keep the cabañas cool, fully tiled private baths with hot and cold water. Each is fronted by a private veranda with hammock and two Adirondack style deck chairs overlooking the water. For 2009, Charlie is converting the current clubhouse to a 2-bedroom, quad occupancy cabaña suite to increase occupancy from 6 to 10 guests.

The new dining room/clubhouse will feature an open-air deck & dining area overlooking the water where anglers enjoy a relaxing happy hour before sitting down to one of Tarpon Caye’s signature Caribbean Gourmet dinners. Charlie (an excellent chef himself) recruits only the very best chefs from the mainland and oversees the menu. The food is outstanding!

Power on the island is generated full 110 volt so your DVD player or other appliances will plug right in. The main generator is shut down at 9:00 pm but a 12 volt system provides ample electric lighting throughout the night. Note: a new solar power system is anticipated for 2009 which will give 110 volt service 24/7.

A pump driven 12,000 gallon rain water storage system provides ample water pressure to all the cabañas. For communications, the lodge provides free Internet service (WiFi is planned for the 2008/2009 season), free incoming calls to the lodge, and use of the phone to make outgoing calls using a prepaid phone card (available on the Caye). The new bar will even have satellite television for those who can’t live without their CNN!

When not fishing, eating or otherwise relaxing, guests may enjoy the complimentary use the lodge’s sea kayaks or snorkeling equipment. Optional snorkeling or diving charters may be arranged for non-fishing guests.

  • El Pescador Resort

    El Pescador Resort

    Updated on

El Pescador Resort on Ambergris Caye in Belize is the oldest and most established fishing lodge in Belize. It’s also one of the premier fly fishing destinations for a “Grand Slam” and one of the only areas where tarpon can be caught on the flats, year-round. Ambergris Caye is considered an island, but it is really the southern most tip of the Yucatan Peninsula, and is tucked behind the northern reaches of Belize’s barrier reef. Ambergris Caye is separated from the rest of the Yucatan by a canal dug by the Mayan’s to facilitate trade routes, and tucked behind the Belize barrier reef. The constant high-quality fishing at El Pescador is primarily due to a nearly perfect location with the protection from the reef and a neo-tropical / semi-arid climate (averaging less than a 10 degrees F variation in temperature and 25 inches of rain, year-round).

    or

El Pescador’s fishing program is based around a healthy resident tarpon population (10 – 90 pounds) that can be found in 3-5 feet of water virtually 12 months of the year. There are few angling experiences that can rival the excitement of stalking tarpon on the clear, shallow flats located 45 minutes by boat from El Pescador. When conditions are right you might see hundreds of tarpon on the flats and jump several in a day. In late summer (July, August & September) the tarpon migration practically doubles the tarpon population at El Pescador and larger tarpon, well over 100 pounds, are available on the flats and on the reef.

In addition to the some of most productive year-round tarpon flats in the world, El Pescador has excellent fishing for bonefish and permit on protected flats closer to the lodge, and along the mangrove edges in the lee of the wind. The bonefish typically average 1-3 pounds, but larger bonefish (up to 5-6 pounds) are available. Most of the permit are less than 15 lbs and are frequently sighted in schools, however, larger permit (up to 30 pounds) typically show up during the tarpon migration.

Snook are available in the lagoons and mangrove-lined creeks, but not abundant. Also prevalent in the lagoons, on the flats, or out on the reef (in season) are Jack crevalle, barracuda, sailfish, dolphin, tuna, king mackerel, grouper, snapper, big-eyed jacks, wahoo, sharks of all sizes, and scrappy ladyfish. For fishermen who want to fish offshore or the Belize barrier reef, El Pescador has several larger (38-52 foot) boats available for charter.

El Pescador prides itself on having a staff with some of the most experienced guides in Belize; many have been guiding at El Pescador for over 20 years! The guides have extensive knowledge of this fishery that comes from a lifetime dedicated to learning where the fish are and how they behave. El Pescador guides are also excellent technical fishermen and experts at efficiently and safely handling the 23-foot Mexican super-pangas flats boats you’ll be fishing from.

The El Pescador lodge building is comprised of the dining room, bar, fly shop (the only Scientific Anglers Mastery Series Shop in Belize), and 13 guest rooms. The accommodations at El Pescador are comfortable and spacious, not fancy. Each room has a ceiling fan, air conditioning, private bath with two sinks and a hot shower, and has a view of water. El Pescador introduced their luxury accommodations with a collection of 8, one, two, or three bedroom villas (click here for more information on the El Pescador Villas).

Guests at El Pescador or El Pescador Villas have access to a wide variety of amenities for your enjoyment after a great day of fly-fishing, snorkeling the reef, or inland adventure. The experienced staff at El Pescador, will be happy to help you arrange help you arrange any number of activities. At El Pescador the amenities include a restaurant, a bar, 3 fresh water swimming pools, massage services, exercise room, complimentary kayaks and bicycles, fishing instructor / host, SCUBA diving instructor, concierge, WI-FI, tour office, gift and sundry shop, and the only Scientific Angler Mastery Series Fly Shop in Belize. An attractive white sand beach stretches for miles in front of the lodge. Swimming off the El Pescador dock is preferable to wading because of the amount of seaweed that gets washed ashore.

El Pescador’s restaurant specializes in native Caribbean cuisine made with fresh local produce and seafood. The meals are “family style” and each evening El Pescador either features two entrees or a buffet at dinner. Evening meals are served on the outdoor deck or in the dining room and El Pescador encourages everyone to dine together in the evening.

Pescador also offers a variety of non-fishing activities that range from snorkeling to Scuba diving to almost a dozen Eco-tour options, like one day and over night sightseeing trips to ancient Mayan ruins located on main land Belize. The town of San Pedro is 10 minutes away by boat and is comprised of several hotels and bars and can be an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon or evening. Please call or email for more information on the non-fishing activities.

As you can see from the information provided, Angler Adventures has considerable experience making arrangements to Belize. We can assure you the lowest airfares to Belize City, round-trip including customs fees and tax.

    Turneffe Island Resort

    Updated on

Turneffe Island Resort is located on the Caye Bokel, in the southern part of Turneffe Atoll Island Chain. The Turneffe Atoll is located 30 miles off the coast of Belize and the only inhabitants on Caye Bokel are the resorts personnel and guests.

Turneffe Island Resort is 5 – 10 minutes from clear, pristine flats. If you enjoy walking the flats in pursuit of bonefish and permit, there is no better place than Turneffe Atoll’s miles upon miles of ankle deep flats that lie between the Turneffe Islands and the surrounding reef. These flats are composed of hard sand, coral and eelgrass and nearly all these flats are wadable. It’s not uncommon to see schools of 25 or more tailing bonefish against the dramatic and unusual background of palm-studded mangrove islands and crashing white surf on the barrier reef that is unlike anywhere else in the world.

    Tarpon

Tarpon are available in mangrove creeks from approximately mid-May through December with the peak tarpon fishing occurring June, July and August. The average size of the tarpon landed at Turneffe Island Resort is between 40 – 50 lbs, but during the peak of the migration, it’s possible to get shots at 150 lb + fish.

    Permit

Tailing permit sometimes appear on the shallow flats on the high tides. However, permit are also available on the deeper flats, creeks, or deeper water areas like “the elbow”.

    Other Species

There is excellent grouper and snapper fishing in the many mangrove creeks surrounding the lodge.

To preserve this special fishery, the resort has limited the number of anglers each week to 8 and rotate fishing certain flats to insure the fish stay hungry and happy. English is the native language of Belize, a former English colony. The guides at Turneffe Island Resort have years of experience fishing and guiding anglers on these waters. The guides fish out of Dolphin Super Skiffs with 50 HP, 4-stroke outboard engines.

Turneffe Island Resort has first-rate facilities, especially considering its remote location. All rooms and cabanas (optional upgrade) have been extensively renovated. Every room at Turneffe Island Resort opens up to a lovely white sand beach and has ceiling fans, air conditioning and a private bathroom. We recommend it for wives and families provided everyone enjoys diving or fishing. When you visit this beautiful island you are guaranteed privacy. Turneffe Island Resort will organize special events, such as picnics and boating for “non activity” guests, but realize that all activities center around the water. Non-activity guests are welcomed, and may enjoy windsurfing, volleyball, kayaking, swimming, sunfish sail boat use and beach combing.

Diving: The most spectacular dive sites in Belize – Lighthouse Reef, Blue Hole, Glovers Reef and Half Moon Caye – are all within an hour ride by boat. (Call for diving rates). Excellent snorkeling / diving is also available near the lodge. Turneffe Island Lodge operates two new Pro 48 boats. One is used for the diving program and the other used for guest transfer and deep-sea fishing. There is no better diving in the Caribbean.

A 50% deposit is necessary to reserve space at Turneffe Island Resort and after receiving your deposit we will send a complete list of tackle and equipment to bring. Final payment is due 65 days prior to departure.

Angler Adventures has considerable experience making arrangements to Belize. We can assure you the lowest currently available airfares. • Venezuela

    Venezuela

    Los Roques

At Los Roques it is “business as usual” and that means the flats have been rested and the bonefish are eager! Chip Bates of Angler Adventures traveled to Los Roques in early July 2003 and reports that the political situation in Caracas has stabilized, the economy is regaining strength and the Venezuelan’s are anxious to receive tourists.

Some things do get better with age, like the bonefishing at Los Roques. This atoll is now a National Park. The numbers of outfitters have been limited, but the bonefish are thriving. Politics kept anglers away last year. Our outfitter, Sight Cast, bats 100% on customer satisfaction. This is an exotic destination for wading flats, a lot closer than Christmas Island or Seychelles. Read about “The Pancakes” on our web site.

From mid January through mid October, Los Roques is one of the great destinations to stalk bonefish on foot. Like Christmas Island, all fishing is done wading. Los Roques is a spectacularly beautiful coral and sand atoll, 80 miles off the Venezuelan north coast. The flats are pristine an loaded with bonefish from small to large, as well as some tarpon and permit. Outfitting is provided by Sight Cast  at Acuarela Lodge.

    Guri Lake

Few experiences in angling can compare with the savage explosion of a peacock bass striking a top water lure or fly. Guri Lake is Venezuela’s most well-known peacock fishery. Guri’s fish will average 6 – 7 pounds, but double digit fish (up to 20 + pounds) are here as well. Guri is outfitted by Chapi Sportfishing’s Paovon Lodge, located on the southern shore of the lake. We also expect to hear good things from Jacob Elias (former owner of the original Guri Lodge) who is now operating a 65-foot houseboat, the Peacock Princess. Jacob has refurbished his fleet of Ranger bass boats and can now accommodate up to 8 anglers. The Peacock Princess offers the advantage of being able to move “the lodge” to the best fishing throughout the season.

    La Guaira Bank

Eleven miles northeast of the beach resort village of Caraballeda, an underwater mountain range rises from depths of 300 – 500 fathoms to peaks within 45 fathoms of the surface.

Deep oceanic currents collide with this structure producing an upwelling from the nutrient rich depths, concentrating the food chain on the surface. The result is one of the world’s greatest fisheries for blue marlin, white marlin and sailfish, known as La Guaira Bank.

While “The Bank” produces all three species year round (and broadbill swordfish in the summer), the most popular seasons are September through November for white marlin, and March – May for best numbers of blues.

    Rio Chico

Tacarigua Lagoon near the town of Rio Chico hosts a fantastic baby tarpon fishery. These fish range in size from 3 – 10 pounds and at times (particularly the fall months) tarpon to 50 + pounds are available. This is a fishery well suited to light tackle and fly rodders. It’s not unusual to jump 30, 40 or 50 of these mini-silver kings in a day. Rio Chico makes an interesting side trip following a Los Roques or a billfishing package.

  • Wading the Flats: The Next Step – a collection of our best articles to up your wading game

There comes a time in a man’s life when he must take the next step! For fly fisherman, that’s a step out of the boat in pursuit of bonefish. There are usually opportunities to wade anywhere you bonefish. Then, there are destinations that are literally all wading. To tackle them you need to start thinking outside the boat. Click on the links below to up your game or find a new destination.

    Thinking Outside the Boat

Wading puts you in the bonefish’s environment. It allows you to get close to the fish. It provides the opportunity to approach fish down wind. Two anglers can fish at the same time. It’s good exercise. It enables you to fish water too shallow for a boat. Sometimes it’s easier to catch fish on foot, sometimes it’s harder. Regardless, there’s a lot of satisfaction to tracking down your prey on foot.

Beyond the Blue Bonefishing, South Caicos

Less than 140 anglers fish South Caicos each year, creating one of the most remarkable ratios of angler per thousand bonefish anywhere short of Christmas Island or Seychelles. The remoteness of South Caicos is most savored when you cover mile upon mile of it’s gorgeous, shallow flats by airboat and never see a “prop scar”. You realize no one else fishes here. It’s all yours. Everything about South Caicos … “south” as it’s called, is different … in a good way. It’s all wading.

    How to Catch More Bonefish

Use a triple surgeon’s knot when tying leader to leader and the improved clinch knot or better yet the non-slip mono loop knot when tying the tippet to the fly. Many experts have abandoned the blood or barrel knot in favor of the surgeon’s knot for connecting leader to leader and likewise have abandoned the clinch knot in favor of the non-slip mono loop. Your guides may continue to use barrel knots and clinch knots, so we recommend you learn to tie the knots we recommend for yourself.

Every time you or the guide ties a section of leader to leader, or you tie the tippet to the fly, you should test the knot strength by affixing the fly to something stationary and pulling firmly. More fish are lost due to leader or knot failure than any other reason.

    Update on South Andros

Over the last few years, more and more clients fishing Bair’s LodgeAndros SouthPleasant Bay or Mars Bay are catching big bonefish. The 7 – 10 pounders are being landed every month. Mars Bay has kept a record of the bonefish caught this season, here are some highlights.

Go Small. Go Light. Go Weedless

You can encounter tailing fish on any fertile bottom, but weedy bottoms hold the most prey, therefore the most fish. Big fish seem more comfortable feeding in the shallows over a dark bottom. Click here for tips on Shallow Water, Tailing Fish.

The end of the outgoing and beginning of the incoming brings the skinniest water that’s when you’ll find fish tailing over the weeds. To catch them, you’ll need a fly that doesn’t “plop” when it hits the water: go small.

Preparing for Your Bonefishing Trip: Wading

Protect Your Feet with a good pair of wading shoes or boots designed for flats fishing, a few pairs of wet wading socks, and don’t forget to break in your shoes. Wading shoes and socks will help to keep sand out and reduce blister forming friction, as well as giving support for a day of wading. But, if the first time you put on your wading shoes in the Bahamas, it’ll be a long week. Break in your shoes by wearing them around the house for an hour or two a couple times per week. It’s much better than blisters or sore arches. Do Not wear last years sneakers with cotton socks or open sandals – your feet will thank you.

Religious Experience vs Purpose in Life

Being in the right place at the right time, then having it confirmed by the sudden appearance of an enormous tail, creates an explosion of urgency, nervousness, opportunity and energy …. An adrenalin rush beyond compare. You get pretty good at judging the size of the fish by the thickness and width of the fork in his tail. Think jaws of life, not pruning shears!

  • Update on South Andros

Most anglers identify South Andros as a huge expanse of wadable flats around the southern and southwestern tip of the island:  Flats filled with large schools of uneducated bonefish in the 2-4 pound range eager to eat flies.  Anyone interested in seeing larger fish in singles and doubles would gravitate the North Bight of Andros, the West Side of Andros, or the North Shore of Grand Bahama.  Think again!

    1)      The numbers of fish being caught over the spring and neap tides are virtually identical, but the “moon” tides are producing bigger fish.

    2)      Anglers are landing good numbers of fish in the 27” – 31” range in each month.

    3)      The largest bonefish landed was an astounding 36”.

To put some of this into perspective, and provide information on how to estimate the weight of your Atlantic bonefish, please refer to the table below, which has been excerpted from page 20 of Randall Kaufmann’s Bonefishing!.

This method of estimating weight is not as accurate as [girth2 x length / 800], however it does highlight the massive size of a 36” bonefish!  For those of us with ruler marks on our rods, it also provides an easy way to estimate the weight of our bonefish and minimize the amount of time spent handling the bonefish (click here for best practices for on handling and releasing bonefish).

Go ahead and speculate why there are so many more big bonefish being caught on the South Andros flats.  It could be cyclical, climate change, guides getting better at finding bigger fish, or better anglers doing the fishing.  With anglers landing plenty of fish in the 7.7 to 11.9 pound range, our conclusion is that this might be the best time to fish South Andros.

  • Turneffe Flats Resort – A Tarpon Story

The following recap of Angler Adventures owner Chip Bates’ trip to Turneffe Flats Resort appeared as a newsletter in September 2010Kevin Sheehan’s recent report got us excited about the summer tarpon fishing on Turneffe Atoll as the numbers of large, migratory tarpon rapidly increase over the next few months.  Enjoy!

My son Tyler wanted to catch a big Tarpon on a fly and I wanted to wade flats for Bonefish and Permit in case the Tarpon weren’t “on”. We had a week in August between Tyler’s summer job and school.

The Turneffe Islands have a migratory population of big Tarpon that usually arrive in May and remain through most of October. Bonefish and Permit are year round. On paper, it appeared that that Turneffe Flats Resort had what we were looking for. In reality, it was better than expected.

First, it’s great bonding to travel with your son. Because of his work and college schedule, we hadn’t done this since high school. Secondly, Tyler and I love the fishing lodge schedule: up early, eat, fish, eat, and to bed early. Well, that’s where we differ…at least I was in bed early.

We were assigned Dubs as our guide. Dubs is an upbeat, happy guy who takes his fishing seriously. The only disappointment of the trip was that neither of us landed a Permit. Not for lack of trying. We had multiple, if not dozens, of shots daily. We’ll save the Permit for another trip.

We warmed up on Bonefish and caught plenty. Turneffe Flats has some of the best wading anywhere, but we also poled some deeper flats for larger fish and caught bones up to 8 lbs. To me this was a delightful way to fill in the gaps between Tarpon and Permit.

One afternoon about 3:00 PM, Dubs suggested the tide was good for Tarpon. We motored back to a large creek, adjacent to the lodge, that connects the ocean to the lagoon. This creek is too deep to pole, but it’s crystal clear. As we approached the creek, Tyler spotted something break the surface at a distance.

We stopped and looked but could confirm nothing. We continued towards Dubs’ favorite Tarpon spot. Dubs dropped anchor and asked Tyler to cast his intermediate line perpendicular to the current, let the fly sink, then swing in the current on the retrieve. While Tyler was straightening his line, Dubs saw activity in the area we’d just come from. Next we saw two 100 lb Tarpon come completely airborne like dolphins at Sea World. Holy #$*@!, we all said in unison. Up came the anchor and we got our butts to that spot in a hurry. For the next 45 minutes it was mayhem. Big Tarpon everywhere around the boat, under the boat, airborne on both sides of the boat, all chasing big needlefish and ballyhoo. It was one of the most incredible sights I’ve seen in lifelong fishing career.

Bottom line: Tyler jumped 4 tarpon from 80 – 120 lbs. Every fish eventually threw the fly. The frenzy petered out just before dark. Time for dinner. Dubs said the tide would be good again in the morning. He wanted to be on water before sunrise.

We got to Dubs’ favorite spot in the pre-dawn light. It was beautifully quiet and calm, except for the tide. Tyler straightened his line, ready to cast the black and purple Puglisi Tarpon Streamer tied on a circle hook, the same fly the 4 tarpon ate the day before. It wasn’t long before we saw Tarpon roll in the current left of the boat. One cast and Tyler was dancing with a tail walking Tarpon that again spit the fly.

Not being a fan of circle hooks, I suggested to Dubs that we change the fly. We selected the exact same pattern tied on an Owner Aki traditional bend hook. Tarpon remained active around the boat and it wasn’t long before Ty connected again. This time the fly held through the first jump, the second and third jumps. 30 minutes later we landed this gorgeous fish, estimated at 80 lbs.

The Tarpon had stopped rolling. We were back in time for breakfast, ready to sight fish for bones and permit the rest of the day.

  • Seychelles Best Flats Fishing – Farquhar Atoll

The Seychelles became a bucket list destination because it’s a beautiful, remote destination with fantastic wading for bonefish on hard sand & coral flats and a variety of other species both on and off the flats that added depth to the fishery.  Recently, a new fishing operation has opened on Farquhar Atoll, which has taken those credentials to the next level.

Beautiful and remote? Farquhar is called the “Jewel of the Seychelles” and considered to be the most beautiful island in the archipelago and also the southern most atoll (2 hour flight from Mahe).  The staff and guests are the only people on the atoll, living in the islands only accommodations.  Check.

Fantastic Bonefishing? The fishing is 100% wading.  The average schooling bonefish is 4 – 6 pounds and there will be quite a few bonefish in the 6 – 8 pound range.  Most anglers end up leaving the schools to find fish in single and doubles for a bit more of a challenge.  Check.

Variety of Species?  In addition to Bonefish, there are the normal fish you’d expect to see on a flat in the Seychelles: Shark, Barracuda, Snapper, Triggerfish, Trevally (including Giant Trevally), Milkfish, Napoleon Wrasse and Indo-Pacific Permit.  The guides on Farquhar have also figured out how to catch Humphead Parrotfish, which were previously though to be uncatchable on the fly and become experts at targeting GT’s (Giant Trevally).  You can also fish deeper water for Sailfish, several Grouper species, Yellowfin Tuna, Wahoo, Job fish, and more.  A client of our landed 18 different species on the fly…all with a floating line!    Check.

This is truly one of the special fishing destinations in world, and the reservations book shows it – the first availability is for late-October 2013.  If you’re interested in fishing Farquhar, we suggest getting started now.  Like Farquhar, but more interested in Bonefishing?  Check out Farquhar’s sister operation St. Brandon’s Atoll, which has better bonefishing with less variety

Thinking Outside the Boat: Wading for Bonefish in Bahamas on the Flats

“The challenge and rewards of sight-fishing for bonefish with fly tackle increase greatly once you step outside the boat and pursue them on foot. Wading for bonefish provides every textbook fly fishing scenario imaginable. Virtually every bonefishing destination offers wading opportunities, but there’s one Bahamian island in particular that’s home to a true mom-and-pop lodge that specifically caters to those who want to experience bonefishing in its purist form – Acklins Island, home of Grey’s Point Bonefish Inn.” – John Frazier

Regardless, there’s a lot of satisfaction to tracking down your prey on foot

In his fascinating article in the November / December issue of Fly Fishing in Salt Waters entitled, “Thinking Outside the Boat”, Editor John Frazier refers to his wading experiences as Grey’s Point Bonefish Inn, Acklins Island, Bahamas, as a “religious experience”.

  • Go Small. Go Light. Go Weedless.

    Bonefish on Grass Flats

Go Small.  Go Light.  Go Weedless.

    by Chip Bates

You can encounter tailing fish on any fertile bottom, but weedy bottoms hold the most prey, therefore the most fish. Big fish seem more comfortable feeding in the shallows over a dark bottom.  Click here for tips on Shallow Water, Tailing Fish.

The end of the outgoing and beginning of the incoming brings the skinniest water that’s when you’ll find fish tailing over the weeds. To catch them, you’ll need a fly that doesn’t “plop” when it hits the water: go small.

A tailing fish is focused on a small area.  Frequently he’ll create a cloud of sand or mud where he’s feeding. You must put the fly in the area where’s he’s rooting, a matter of inches from his nose. You must throw a fly that doesn’t spook him when it lands: go light.

Once the fly lands in front of the fish, let it sink, then give it the tiniest of strips: go weedless.

Without a weed guard, your fly will invariably snag on grass and stripping a fly that’s hooked on a weed is like drag on a dry fly.  Click Here for Tips on Tailing Fish over Weedy Bottoms.

There are loads of excellent flies for bonefishing in skinny water, but our number one fly is the Bunny Bone when we need to go small, light or weedless.  Having a variety of Bunny Bones in your fly box is a necessity, especially when wading for bonefish.  Tan or brown (tied with tan or pink thread) rabbit fur tail with a little gold Mylar and mono eyes are top producing colors.  It’s also a great fly in slightly deeper water with small or medium bead chain eyes, instead of mono.  Try adding crazy legs and don’t forget the weed guard!  Click here for more information on tying bonefish flies, including the Bunny Bone.

  • Religious Experience vs Purpose in Life

Religious Experience vs Purpose in Life

    by Chip Bates

In his fascinating article in the November/December issue of Fly Fishing in Salt Waters entitled, “Thinking Outside the Boat”, Editor John Frazier refers to his wading experiences at Grey’s Point Bonefish Bonefish Inn, Acklins Island, Bahamas, as a “religious experience”.

I’m an extremist member of that congregation.

I’m celebrating a half century of fly fishing this year. I’ve seen my passion for the sport get more and more focused over the years. In the 70’s, I caught my first bonefish on a fly in the Bahamas. In the 80’s, I added tarpon and permit (Belize, Mexico, Bahamas, Los Roques and Florida Keys). In the early 90’s, I chalked up my first double digit bone (Andros). In the late 90’s, I gravitated toward wading, mostly to enable my partner and me to fish at the same time, one in the boat, one on foot. That was also the decade I fished the Seychelles for the first time. Wow!

All-day-walking miles of gorgeous flats, searching for underwater movement of any kind, keeping sharks at bay when bones were in sight, mixing it up with milkfish, trevally and permit. It was way too much fun to call exercise.

By the year 2000, I had blinders on. I’d become a wading junkie, transfixed by catching big bonefish on foot in water so shallow, the fish couldn’t hide it’s own body parts!

    Bonefish-tailing-on-the-Flats

Knowing where to find them, what tide, time of day, how to approach and catch these hyper sensitive, actively feeding fish, became my “purpose in life”!

    Chip’s progression:
    Sightfishing
    Fishing for bonefish
    Fly fishing for bonefish
    Fly fishing for big bonefish
Fly fishing for big tailing bonefish
Fly fishing for big tailing bonefish while wading!

    That's a big tail!
    That’s a big tail!

Back to Fly Fishing in Salt Waters Editor, John Frazier.  John fished 3 days at one of the premier wading destinations in the Bahamas, Grey’s Point Bonefish Inn on Acklins Island, with Angler Adventure’s fishing “pro”, Doug Schlink. Three days was hardly enough, but John adapted quickly, caught lots of fish to 6 pounds and got a shot at a 10 + pound fish in 6 inches of water! I’ll give John a few years to ratchet up “religious experience” to “purpose in life”.  For a great read, by a talented writer, fisherman and photographer, check out this link to the:

  • Preparing for Your Bonefishing Trip: Wading

Click here for more information on wading shoes

Find a Comfortable lumbar pack or chest/sling pack.  Bigger is not always better.  The pack should have the essentials (flies, leader and tippet material, nippers, hook file, pliers / hemostats, light rain jacket, camera, water bottle, and maybe your lunch / snack) but not packed full so it disturbs your casting.

Wading is Exercise and it can be a lot of work, especially at a destination like Grey’s Point Inn, South Caicos or the Seychelles where there are extensive flats and you might wade all day.  Some flats are firm and easy to wade, while others can be slightly soft or have uneven bottoms, which make walking more difficult.  To be sure you’re physically prepared for long wading sessions, schedule long walks or hikes months before your trip.  It’s also a great way to find some more remote areas on your local waters, so don’t forget your rod and a box flies!

A Little Practice Casting can make the difference between getting your fly to that 9-pound bonefish, or watching it leave a rooster tail as it runs for deeper water.  The majority of shots at bonefish while wading happen between 40’ – 60’, so accuracy and versatility are more important than speed and distance (but the later can also be helpful).  The best practice casting is to targets in that 40’ – 60’ range, from different angles (click here to see a diagram of the casting clock).  Be sure that you’re not just casting with the wind at your back – knowing how to handle wind blowing in your face or from your right / left will make getting your fly in the right place much easier.  Don’t forget to practice your casting while wearing your pack!
