  • Turneffe Flats Resort – A Tarpon Story

The following recap of Angler Adventures owner Chip Bates’ trip to Turneffe Flats Resort appeared as a newsletter in September 2010Kevin Sheehan’s recent report got us excited about the summer tarpon fishing on Turneffe Atoll as the numbers of large, migratory tarpon rapidly increase over the next few months.  Enjoy!

My son Tyler wanted to catch a big Tarpon on a fly and I wanted to wade flats for Bonefish and Permit in case the Tarpon weren’t “on”. We had a week in August between Tyler’s summer job and school.

The Turneffe Islands have a migratory population of big Tarpon that usually arrive in May and remain through most of October. Bonefish and Permit are year round. On paper, it appeared that that Turneffe Flats Resort had what we were looking for. In reality, it was better than expected.

First, it’s great bonding to travel with your son. Because of his work and college schedule, we hadn’t done this since high school. Secondly, Tyler and I love the fishing lodge schedule: up early, eat, fish, eat, and to bed early. Well, that’s where we differ…at least I was in bed early.

We were assigned Dubs as our guide. Dubs is an upbeat, happy guy who takes his fishing seriously. The only disappointment of the trip was that neither of us landed a Permit. Not for lack of trying. We had multiple, if not dozens, of shots daily. We’ll save the Permit for another trip.

    Chip's 8 lb Belize Bonefish

We warmed up on Bonefish and caught plenty. Turneffe Flats has some of the best wading anywhere, but we also poled some deeper flats for larger fish and caught bones up to 8 lbs. To me this was a delightful way to fill in the gaps between Tarpon and Permit.

One afternoon about 3:00 PM, Dubs suggested the tide was good for Tarpon. We motored back to a large creek, adjacent to the lodge, that connects the ocean to the lagoon. This creek is too deep to pole, but it’s crystal clear. As we approached the creek, Tyler spotted something break the surface at a distance.

We stopped and looked but could confirm nothing. We continued towards Dubs’ favorite Tarpon spot. Dubs dropped anchor and asked Tyler to cast his intermediate line perpendicular to the current, let the fly sink, then swing in the current on the retrieve. While Tyler was straightening his line, Dubs saw activity in the area we’d just come from. Next we saw two 100 lb Tarpon come completely airborne like dolphins at Sea World. Holy #$*@!, we all said in unison. Up came the anchor and we got our butts to that spot in a hurry. For the next 45 minutes it was mayhem. Big Tarpon everywhere around the boat, under the boat, airborne on both sides of the boat, all chasing big needlefish and ballyhoo. It was one of the most incredible sights I’ve seen in lifelong fishing career.

Bottom line: Tyler jumped 4 tarpon from 80 – 120 lbs. Every fish eventually threw the fly. The frenzy petered out just before dark. Time for dinner. Dubs said the tide would be good again in the morning. He wanted to be on water before sunrise.

Gorgeous 80 lb Turneffe Atoll Tarpon
Tyler, Dubs and a nice Tarpon

We got to Dubs’ favorite spot in the pre-dawn light. It was beautifully quiet and calm, except for the tide. Tyler straightened his line, ready to cast the black and purple Puglisi Tarpon Streamer tied on a circle hook, the same fly the 4 tarpon ate the day before. It wasn’t long before we saw Tarpon roll in the current left of the boat. One cast and Tyler was dancing with a tail walking Tarpon that again spit the fly.

Not being a fan of circle hooks, I suggested to Dubs that we change the fly. We selected the exact same pattern tied on an Owner Aki traditional bend hook. Tarpon remained active around the boat and it wasn’t long before Ty connected again. This time the fly held through the first jump, the second and third jumps. 30 minutes later we landed this gorgeous fish, estimated at 80 lbs.

The Tarpon had stopped rolling. We were back in time for breakfast, ready to sight fish for bones and permit the rest of the day.

  • Summertime: Light Winds, Less Pressure, Great Fishing for Bonefish, Permit and Tarpon

Summertime: Light Winds, Less Pressure, Great Fishing for Bonefish, Permit and Tarpon

Some of the best Bonefish, Permit and Tarpon fishing occurs in the summertime. Due to cool ocean currents / breezes, the Bahamas temperatures typically never get over 85o F in the summer and don’t heat up like the large land masses in the U.S. Rain showers are short lived and there’s little or no wind to deal with. Some lodges close down, but the ones that remain open know it’s the best chance for a Grand Slam all year. Permit prefer warm water, Migratory Tarpon begin to show. Glistening Bonefish tails are a common sight, early and late in the day.

    Abaco Island

Rickmon Bonefish Lodge in Sandy Point, Abaco is open in June and July, because it’s the best time for Permit and Mutton Snapper (Yes on the fly rod!), according to Ricardo Burrows.

Abaco Lodge, The light summer winds allow you to do “More Cool Stuff”, like trailering up north, fishing out of the Upper Cays and Oceanside flats in pursuit of Big Bones, and Mutton Snapper.

    Available Dates:
    June 14 – 20, 10 rods
    June 22 – 26, 8 rods
    June 26 – July 3, 8 rods

Blackfly Lodge In addition to flats fishing for Bonefish, Permit, Mutton Snapper, and occasionally Tarpon, Blackfly has an offshore option with its 31′ Yellow Fin docked on the East Side just minutes from Reefs and Blue Water.
    The last openings are June 24 – July 7 and Aug 1 – 13

    Andros Island

Prescott Smith of Stafford Creek Lodge says emphatically that summertime is your best chance at a Grand Slam (Tarpon, Permit & Bonefish). Mutton Snapper fishing in June and July is exceptional. If you prefer Reef and Offshore fishing, go for Tuna in the morning, (catch your dinner) and hit the flats in the afternoon.

Pleasant Bay and Bair’s Lodge are open in June and still have some great space available. Some of the best fishing in South Andros takes place in June with plenty of fish and no pressure!

Bair’s Lodge is a luxury lodge with good management and great bonefishing.

    Available Dates:
    June 4 – 8, 4 rods
    June 4 – 11, 4 rods
    June 8 – 12, 10 rods

New Upgrades at an Old Favorite: Pesca Maya, Ascension Bay, Mexico

Angler Adventure’s Doug Schlink visited Pesca Maya Fishing Lodge 18 years ago when the lodge first opened. While the accommodations were basic (okay “rustic”), the food was wonderful, the hospitality cordial, the guides excellent, the fishing terrific, all at a modest price. It became one of our favorites. Over the years, accommodations were upgraded, but the major renovations and new construction of recent months have elevated Pesca Maya to one of the nicest lodges in the Yucatan.

Pesca Maya is situated on the Yucatan’s Ascension Bay, one of the world’s greatest flat’s fisheries and certainly one of the best for those seeking a “Grand Slam” – a Bonefish, Tarpon and Permit on the fly in one day. Hundreds of Slams have been achieved in Ascension Bay. Bones, permit and juvenile tarpon are available year round as are snook, jack creavlle, barracuda, ladyfish and more. The larger migratory tarpon are present from April to November, with late spring and summer offering the best opportunities for big “poons”.

  • Cuba Flats Fishing: Cuba Lives Up To The Hype

Cuba Flats Fishing: Cuba Lives Up To The Hype

Days after Evan Peterson’s return from the amazing live aboard fisheries at the Jardines de la Reina archipelago, Doug Schlink headed south to fish the land based Cuban fisheries; Cayo Largo (home of the Avalon Fly) off the southwest coast and the permit rich Cayo Cruz to the North.

Despite Avalon having fished some of these waters for 18 years, Evan and Doug concluded the fisheries are so vast and the fishing pressure so light, these are “virgin” waters compared to most known flats destinations. The bones are relaxed, the permit are eaters, and the tarpon attack every fly they see. Cuba lives up to its hype!

    Cayo Largo

Cayo Largo is the best Grand Slam option, with lots of bones of impressive size, abundant and aggressive resident tarpon to 60 pounds, supplemented by the big (80 – 120+) ‘poons during the April – June migration, and astounding numbers of permit, many in the 20 and 30+ pound category. The area also offers excellent snook fishing. Doug had a morning where he had 12 shots at permit before 11 AM. Doug also landed a 50 lb. tarpon with a dozen 15 pounders in an afternoon.

    Available Dates:

    December 12 – 19, 2015, 4 Rods
    January 9 – 16, 2016, 4 Rods
    January 30 – February 6, 2016, 2 Rods
    June 11 – 18, 2016, 4 Rods

    Cayo Cruz

Avalon has operated in this area for the past 3 years, and it’s likely the best pure permit fishery in Cuba. In 2 days, Doug hooked 3 permit and landed 2, and saw a lot more! Cayo Cruz also provides excellent bonefishing with a good percentage of wading flats and world class tarpon fishing during the migration from April – June. Anglers have the options of land based or live aboard accommodations.

    Available Dates:

    December 5 – 12, 2015, Casona de Romano, 8 Rods
    January 16 – 23, 2016, Casona de Romano, 10 Rods

  • Cuba Flats Fishing: 2015 Will Be Remembered in Angling History!

Cuba Flats Fishing: 2015 Will Be Remembered in Angling History!

2015 will be remembered in Angling history as the year it became legal for US Citizens, in possession of a “people to people” travel letter from the non-profit fisheries research and conservation organization Bonefish Tarpon Trust (BTT), to sport fish in Cuba.

2015 is also the year travel restrictions were lifted, making it legal for US airlines to fly to Cuba, US travel agents to book travelers to Cuba and US insurance companies to offer travel insurance to US Citizens traveling to Cuba.

Angler Adventures has been assisting a limited number of US anglers traveling legally to Cuba for several years. But, the easing of restrictions in general and the travel license from BTT in particular, opens the door for any US angler wanting to fish Cuba.

What hasn’t changed (and will take years to catch up) is the tourist infrastructure within Cuba and the transportation network to Cuba. Traveling to Cuba is still complex. We recommend using a knowledgeable, qualified travel agent, whether it’s your first trip or your twelfth.

  • Cuba Flats Fishing: Best Tarpon Fishing Ever, Grand Slams, Super Slams

Cuba Flats Fishing: Best Tarpon Fishing Ever, Grand Slams, Super Slams

“Best Tarpon Fishing I’ve had in 30 years”, reported veteran tarpon angler Richard A. about his trip to Cayo Cruz. It started the first minutes into the first morning. After a short run from Avalon Fleet I, Richard hooked and landed an 80 pound tarpon within minutes of stepping on the casting deck. First cast! And the action never let up. Richard and his partner jumped or landed dozens of tarpon ranging from 30 – 100 pounds over the next 6 days.

“I had a Grand Slam [bonefish, permit, and Tarpon] before lunch. Landed a snook an hour later (Super Slam).” Doug A highlighting his first day fishing on Cayo Largo.

“The fishing was what I dreamed it would be – our group had 5 slams [4 grand and 1 super], which could have easily been TEN! Not too shabby.” Bruce A.

“It was impressive how the permit rushed almost every fly they saw – didn’t matter if they were singles or in small schools, they rushed the fly. Permit, bonefish, tarpon, snook, shark, ‘cuda, multiple snapper species, jacks, box fish, lady fish provided constant action for 6 full days of fishing.” Scott T.

“Terrific Fishing – So much sight fishing – loved watching the entire take as a tarpon inhaled the fly. Great variety too: Lot’s of tarpon 70 lbs and up, Permit in schools and on rays, a big jack and a secret snook spot [that we’ll see again in 2017!]. Anne just missed getting a super slam, landing a tarpon, bonefish & snook on her last day.” Bill V.

Many clients spent multiple nights in Havana and raved about the food, the sights and the warmth of the people. Other clients flew privately to skip Havana altogether and focus on the fishing. In all cases, the “Cuban Experience” overshadowed even the best fishing and almost everyone returning from Cuba talks about a “special trip”.

This fall, US airlines will begin flying direct from the US to Havana, and other regional Cuban Airports. However, more convenient access is just one piece in the puzzle. We’ve learned a lot about Cuba from our personal trips and our clients reports.

Thinking about Cuba? Give us a call or send us an email – we’re looking forward sharing our expertise to give you the “Cuba Experience” of a life time.
